Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)

What do you bet our man Doyle ends up hitting like Vargas while playing gold glove defense? The naysayers have been proven demonstrably wrong time and time again, I think the probability that it happens one more time is pretty high.

With his defensive ability if he puts up near a 100 wRC+ he's a valuable player. We'll see if the Sox are right about him.

Literally, no one will say we should have done that.

Chris Getz is bad at this. People mistaken the ability to hire smart people for draft purposes with being good as the sox GM right now. This guy has gotten taken to the woodshed in almost every deal

  • This “teams don’t get credit when players work hard and player development is fake” is the worst bit on a site that includes Greg. Getz if anything deserves credit for going after players that show th

I’m pretty sure you said the same thing about Acuna already. Even with his recent hot streak, Acuna has a sweet .550 OPS and did not end up being the Sox CF of the future as you had predicted. Afterall, if he was, Getz wouldn’t have acquired this new bum CF.

I think many here are discounting the potential here. They may be right and he may be a lost cause… but I will not be surprised one bit if this ends up being Miguel Vargas v2 in centerfield.

Time will tell and we’ll see in time.

Until then, see ya’ll tomorrow.

Wish they would have gotten Foster Griffin but… oh well. May we mightily kick his ass and I be proven wrong once more.

Carlos Vielma was my favorite player!

Pereira and Doyle both have the same 13.3% walk rate vs. LHP in the majors this season (small samples for both). EP K's a lot more (40% vs. 27%) while having a lower barrel% and hard hit% but better surface numbers.

His .462 BABIP, a 90 point gap between his actual and expected wOBA, and a 30%+ HR/FB rate vs lefties suggests there's room for some regression in those numbers.

In a weird coincidence, both guys have 43 ABs overall in AAA this year so at least their small sample sizes are easily comparable:

  • Doyle: 17-43 with 5 2B, 2 HR, 8 BB and 19K

  • Pereira: 10-43 with 1 2B, 4 HR, 6 BB, 15K

Don't know enough about Doyle to speculate on if he made some changes while rehabbing at AAA, but he was super productive in his most recent stint there to end July: 10 for 21 with 3 2B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 4K. (Pereira was 4-25 with 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 10 K in his rehab stint around the same time).

Pereira obviously took a bit to get going until his great day yesterday (2-11 since returning with 1 2B/HR, 0 BB, 7K)

Doyle hasn't been back up as long but is 2 for 6 with a 2B, BB, and 2 K in two games.

If they buy into the flashes with the bat and really believe in Doyle as a plus defender, it could work out. One assumes that must be the case given the cost. Hope they're right (though I also hope EP sneaks through waivers anyway). Wish the kid had options, this would bug me less if it was like a Junior Perez DFA instead.

Outside of a deal that seemed tough to f*** up where you have to aim for/have to get multiple team’s top prospects, I have to agree

If we were trying to teach Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony to hit a baseball right now, yes, that trade would have been fucked up.

Rockies had already replaced Doyle with Carrigg. And they had Moniak and McCarthy at the other two spots.

He wasnt even going to start in Colorado.

If only they had Ryan Fuller!

Sam Ant likely won't be starting against lefties.

I'd take roman anthony today over everyone they got in that deal.

Even WE can’t defend this one.

What is there to defend? They got a very good defensive CF whose bat might be coming around. Calling it Dominic Fletcher and Fernando Tatis just shows a limited range of analysis. The Fletcher deal was a wash. It looks to me that Getz did everything they said they were going to do, in the way they promised they'd do it. The only part I don't really like is the DFA of Pereira, and maybe he's a porcelain doll who doesn't look that good in CF.

The whiniest among us will make up hypothetical bullshit to excuse an awful trade by Getz. You know, a trade that he actually made in real life and not in your fantasy land.

When Getz makes one, I'll be sure to complain loud and long.

What’s the indicator of this?

Other teams are trading their 20th+ prospects and here we are trading guys who could be top 10 in a pretty good system

Yeah, I bet Boston Smith will be top 10 for M's

Correct me if I am missing something here:

Pereira is DFA and Doyle is on the 26-man roster and will platoon with Peters.

Q is being sent down and Joey Bart will platoon with Romo.

Castillo will start and Fedde will go to the pen.

Noah Schultz is still a starter

Brazoban goes to the pen taking Dominguez role.

Don't the Sox have to send 1 more player down or DFA off the 26 man

( Hays is still rehabbing? but once his rehab is complete it will be either him or Grichuk getting DFA)

Pal youre the only person here calling people names and policing thoughts.

Dude, you're regularly bloviating about how you're laughing out loud at people saying certain things. No wonder the people in your life deny that they follow baseball anymore, just to avoid this malarkey.

You and your pointless personal insults and jabs. Get some new material pal.

Why move on from Derek Hill if youre going to acquire someone like him a month later though?

Agree Doyle can run and defend.

Because Pereira was coming off the IL, and they had a roster crunch. It was trade Hill, or Pereira. They chose to go with the prospect they sought out.

Calling someone pal is technically calling them a name.

Any quotes from front office regarding their views on him / any tweaks they think they might make (or call it tweaks they think they can make in the off-season to unlock some potential).

You are correct. By my count, the Sox currently have 27 men on the 26 man roster, 14 of them pitchers. So either Schweitzer or Trevor Richards would seem to be headed to Charlotte. If they want to bring Hays up, they're going to need to IL someone. Braden was scratched yesterday. Is he hurt?
