Lets keep in mind this guy has only played for the Rockies, a terrible organization. This will be the first time he has ever been in a playoff race. That alone could bump up his performance. I love the fact he is a great defensive outfielder.

That is an awesome outfield defense.

Why didnt the Sox just fix Nolan Jones? He also had one good year as a member of the rockies?

Another reason I’m not a fan of the trade. Doyle is already 28, the same age as Nolan Jones. If he was a bit younger, fine, perhaps he’s worth the shot. Not a fan of acquiring guys that should be in their prime and are coming off their worst years ever. Sadly, Jones’ one good year with the Rockies was much better offensively than Doyle’s.

I agree that this seems to be a win win on paper. You'll get a center fielder who is basically a walking defensive highlights reel. If you can solve the offense (probably on the off season), you've probably robbed us blind. For what it's worth, the Rockies need pitchers for next year and a 4/5, starter who's control based with lots of pitches seems to be our go to.

Since September first of last year (2025) Brenton Doyle is slashing 198/248/274 with a xwOBA of 235 with a -1.2 fWAR. That ranks him 76th of 77 players with 50+ PA's as an OF'er in wRC+ and it ranks him dead last in fWAR. The absolutely crazy thing is he's slashed that while carrying a .289 BABIP. In that period, he ranks 512 out of 518 players in fWAR, tied with Edgar Quero who the Sox just sent down because he's been so bad.

Not sure I'm seeing that "crushing it" part.

But in the two years since, the center fielder has badly regressed. His 2025 was a stumble to a 0.2 WAR that apparently affected his defense as well, and this season Doyle battled oblique and groin injuries that saw him sent to Triple-A for a rehab assignment before his call-up just two games ago.

Sam Bradfield over at our sister site Purple Row offered her insight on the trade, promising that "when [Doyle] is on, he's on" and that the speedster ran into both bad injury luck and struggles with altitude. He'll face no such problems with the latter in the flatlander climes of Chicago, so perhaps the White Sox coaching staff can coax back more of the speed-D-pop excellence we saw from Doyle two seasons ago.

The odds are quite low. I feel like Getz is a little high on his own supply after some of these surprising pickups/reclamation projects.

I hope Doyle mashes, and does so in a way that doesn't prove any Soxtalk posters wrong.

In 2025 July that year he hit .327 and in August he hit 7 home runs and .319. I’d say he was figuring it out and putting the loss of his son past him.

You’re including his stats from this year when he was playing through injury and are omitting what he did in AAA.

It’s obvious that he has had his struggles and I’ve illustrated those specifically in previous posts. They are similar things Vargas dealt with ( raising his hands, lift and pull, better swing decisions )…

There’s reasons for confidence because he showed capable of doing that in 2024.

I think it’s completely legitimate that a personal tragedy and pressing last year explains initial struggles… and his injuries this year are behind him.

He’s the exact profile of player that should benefit from Fuller and his gold glove defense from 23 to 25 was the best in baseball by some metrics.

If you can’t see the reasons for optimism and understand why they took this risk and only want to focus on what he did wrong for a period of time, then you must have had a hard on for Mason Adams that’s blinding you or something. 😆

It’s not a sure thing slam dunk but there are many reasons that you should understand what they’re going for here.

Yeah, it’s a fine buy low move, but is odd timing and potentially problematic for a playoff push. Our bench now has two incredibly weak RH hitters in Doyle & Acuna plus a question mark in Grichuk. Despite certain flaws, Pereira was very useful against LHP. We could find ourselves highly exposed against lefties down the stretch and into the playoffs now.
