I'd say:

Taylor (100%): They want him starting. He's flashed some decent changeups and shown some ability to vary his breaking ball.

Hagen Smith (50%): I'd imagine it depends on how this experiment goes. I don't know how his command improves out of the pen but if nothing else at least he knows he's gotta get through 1 or 2 innings, not 5 or 6, could help him.

McDougal: 100%): I think they want him as a SP only.

The other guys in contention for a spot would be Noah, Sandlin and Shane Smith I guess?

Burke, Castillo, Martin, Taylor, Shane Smith should be penciled in IMO. Who knows what FA will look like. Noah to me is a dead end right now. I can see him spending the entire next season in AAA assuming it happens. Grab a year back on his clock and figure out a delivery that he can repeat under pressure.

Taylor has been impressive in the pen. I agree with you on Taylor and McDougal both get a crack at a SP role.in 2027

There was talk of Mike Vasil possibly starting before he went down with TJ. The timeline on Mike might put him back in the pen 2027 mid-season, who knows on the rehab.

Oh yea @Falstaff I got high hopes for Vasil. I think he can be a solid 3rd starter maybe. If nothing else he's a good addition into the mix next year.

Yea, his other moves turned out so good that decent waiver wire fliers had to be cut loose from the 40 man of a first place team in August, the horror.

Smith's delivery looks even more pronounced than it was in college. Seems like it would be hard to throw strikes, much less hold pinpoint command..

But seeing recovery times this season, I'd say Vasil isn't really an option to start until 2028.

I mean Hays is pointless, but yeah it sucks to lose the other two for nothing.

That being said, isn't it a sign that the roster was managed pretty well if there's no room on the roster for them? Managed this team into first place.

I'm not a scout, but I thought the same thing while looking at his delivery. It also could have been him having literally no control that lead me to that conclusion. He also went from 95-96 in his first inning to 92-93 on his second inning. He isn't ready for the majors. I'd rather him just work on his stuff in the minors.

Schultz and Hagen Smith having apparently mediocre stuff is not something I predicted coming into the season.

It's easy to criticize a move in retrospect, then generically say, "there's a half dozen guys they could cut before him." No there isn't. They obviously like Joe Rock better. So no, they can't DFA the guy they like better to keep the guy they like worse. That would be colossally stupid.

Getz replaced Hays quickly, and Grichuk produced. I really liked the idea of Pereira, but he played about 27 games. Doyle's a better fielder. Wikelman's JAG.

Teams like the Brewers get their pockets picked every Rule 5 because they develop way more players than fit on the 40-man.

Getz failed to put together a decent rotation during the off-season, and several posters here knew it.

Among his miscalculations, Getz assumed Noah and Hagen would be awesome firepower, at least out of the bullpen, certainly by this time in the season. There were signs in Spring Training that Shane Smith was not the same pitcher that he was last season. Kay has been the only bright spot in a rotation that leans on way too many innings from Opening pitchers and middle relievers. It has been amazing that this pitching staff, the rambling wreck that its is, has clawed and scratched from pitch to pitch to keep a slim lead in the Division. And I should add, it has been almost as stressful for fans watching this as it has been for players and management. I keep thinking to myself, how could we be in 1st place with so much trial and error and uncertainty with the pitching staff ?

Oh yea, I almost forgot, Davis Martin is our "Stopper."

To a certain extent I can't blame Getz. I'm guessing in his heart of hearts he expected them to have another developmental season and not be where they are in the standings. Plus you don't know what restrictions JR imposed.

That being said given where they are Getz should have done more or been allowed to do more at the deadline with pitching.

Hays was a FA, Gonzalez was 25% of the Crochet deal
