It's not exactly like hoops but there's something to the idea that role players do well when they can just be role players. Nobody is asking Beni to come in and play a solid LF and take 600 PA and hit tough lefties anymore. All we need is to mash righties as a DH four times a week and rest up the remainder. And he's excelled in that role.

Gotta give Beni his due. He's been hitting alot better the last couple months and also is clutch.

He also seems to be beloved by all the kids in the clubhouse

I think an interesting topic for conversation for the next couple of years will be whether Beni was actually worth his contract.

It could be that he actually is.

This year has been really nice from AB, but he has been worth 0.7 WAR over four years while playing for the biggest contract this organization has ever issued. Thanks for 26 but I am not even close to admitting he has been worth the contract

100% not worth his contract. Waste of money. Glad the Sox are finding a way to make him useful though.

Good point - but I wonder how much WAR is a good metric to describe his performance considering how much of his playing time has been at DH.

I certainly didn't expect back to back 20 HR seasons from him the past two years.

I mean, he is DHing because he is such a bad defender, his WAR probably looks better because they won’t put a glove on him.

Again, I’m happy with what he has done this season but if I could do things over this would not be a contract I would have given

When he hits a go-ahead home run in the World Series this year, he will be worth every penny of the $75 mil.

To be completely honest, I think asking him simply to be a league replacement player would be bare minimum for me.

He's being paid like a 2 WAR player and I think that's what the Sox expected of him when they signed him. But then he got the hamate injury which drained his power and he also lost a lot of his athleticism and could no longer play the OF. If he was hitting like he is now and played above average defense in LF, that's probably close to a 2 WAR player. Unfortunately for us, he's basically unplayable in the outfield and is now a DH who's a league average hitter. It's not unplayable, but it's also not really worth what he's being paid. You could argue that him being a good hitter in the clutch adds some value (WAR is context-less, after all). Benintendi's 1.09 WPA is around the likes of Randy Arozarena, Shea Langeliers, Rafael Devers, and Sam Antonacci. All of those guys are 20-40% better than league average while Beni is just an average hitter. So you can maybe make some sort of argument that he's producing like a 120 wRC+ hitter. In that case, he might be worth maybe 1 WAR instead of the replacement level player that he is.
