Urbina Wants to Pitch For the White Sox

He states in the article his desire to pitch for the White Sox

TUCSON · Opening Day is less than four weeks away, and former Marlins reliever Ugueth Urbina remains unsigned.

There have been offers from several clubs, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, but none have met his asking price. Urbina, who made $4.5 million last season, sees no need to take a pay cut.

He also wants a multiyear deal after pitching on a one-year contract in 2003.

So he shuttles back and forth between Venezuela and Ozzie Guillen's Arizona rental home, doing what Guillen, his close friend, described this week as "nothing ... just hanging out."

"He feels he deserves more money than what they offered him," says Guillen, in his first year as Chicago White Sox manager. "I don't think he's going to play. I think he's going to go back home and do some different things."

Urbina, 30, would like to pitch for the White Sox, but Guillen said the club can't fit him into its payroll. The Marlins could re-enter the picture on May 1 after failing to offer him arbitration in December, but that remains a long shot.

Could Urbina and his 206 career saves return to the Marlins?

"Yeah, I could see that," Guillen said. "Why not? He should do it. He's my friend. I told him he's wasting career time. He's wasting money. Ugie's Ugie. I can understand that. He has to make that decision. He's very proud, and you have to respect that.

"I hope he changes his mind and comes back with some team."

I think its good that he and Ozzie are tight, maybe he'll pitch for us if he finally figures out there is no money for him. I know the Sox can offer $2 million for an all-star closer like him, we could use as one of our relivers. Who cares that we already have Koch, Politte and Shingo, depth isn't a bad thing.

Relief isn't the problem with the Sox, so unless Oogie could start, they don't need him.

Maybe relief isn't a huge problem, but it's not like we have an all-star bullpen. It's not even one of the top 10 in the league. Any team can always use a really good reliever, and we're no different. I'd love it if we signed Urbina.

If the Sox hadn't signed Shingo, and made promises of Koch retaining the closer role, it could of been a good move to sign Urbina. The best scenario for the Sox would be for "uggie" to take this year off, then sign a multi-year deal next year when cap room is available.

I think if the Sox could sign Urbina that would make our bullpen one of the best around. The Sox would be very solid in the pen.

There is no such thing as too deep in the pen. If we can get him cheap, go for it. If not, don't worry about it.

isn't he pushing Harris for the starting 2nd base job :D

I thought that was Valentine :P

Who's Valentine, We have Valentin. :P

I would take Urbina in a heartbeat. I don't trust Koch. And if Koch is ok then Urbina can set up as he did with the Marlins last year. Koch, Urbina, Marte is a good power Pen

love to see him come but not for his asking price. this guys obviously very proud and won't budge from it if he is willing to sit season out.

Proud or Greedy? You be the judge!

proud--cause if he sits season out he gets no $$$$

you can never have enough pitching, especially when a guy of his caliber wants to pitch for you. I say try to unload Koch for anything right now and sign Ugie. If he wants to pitch here, KW should try anything to get him. This could really solidify the pen.

I'm not a big fan of signing him well because relief pitching is pretty low on our priority list right now. Unless we sign him, then trade him and a prospect for a SP, that might work.

You can't sign and trade a free agent until after June 15.

I say go for it if they could work things out. I doubt they can though. But even if its not a weakness, you can still turn it into a strenght.

Think of it this way, the starting rotation is a weakness, so to make up for that (you assume the pen will be used heavily) it would be good to have a very strong bullpen.

The angels had that two years ago and it worked fine for them.

He may well be out of baseball until about June/July.... at that point there's sure to be some team willing to pay the price to compete.

Add to that Politte, who I believe will rebound to his previous 2003 form, and possibly Shingo and Wunsch, and we have a pretty damn good 'pen. Depth is a very good thing to have in the bullpen, especially when we really don't have a fourth or fifth starter right now...

I think it would be spiffy if Urbina played for us.

 Spiffy.

I'd take him in a heartbeat. If we have a pen of Koch, Urbina, Marte, Politte, Shingo, and Wunsch, and the others that w have(mainly Munoz, Grilli, Wright, Rauch, etc) in the minors, and we would be in very, very good shape.

However, I only do that if we can get him for right around $2 mill. If he doesn't budge, let the greedy(proud if you want to call it that) bastard sit out until he gets a fair offer.

Wow...This is kind of a shock to me....I'm really surprised there haven't been any other callers. I wish we would pick him up.
