Clark Named to Pro Bowl

Clark named to Pro Bowl as need player

By Larry Mayer

January 25, 2006

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Bears tight end Desmond Clark on Wednesday was selected to the Pro Bowl as the NFC's "need player." His inclusion gives the Bears seven Pro Bowlers, tying the Indianapolis Colts for the most in the NFL.

Clark was initially voted as a third alternate to the Pro Bowl after catching 24 passes for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. The seven-year veteran will join six teammates in Hawaii, the largest contingent of Bears players since seven went after the 1986 season.

Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, defensive tackle Tommie Harris and center Olin Kreutz have been selected to start the Feb. 12 all-star game in Honolulu, while safety Mike Brown, cornerback Nathan Vasher and linebacker Lance Briggs are slated to be backups.

Urlacher and Kreutz were each chosen for the fifth time, while Clark, Harris, Brown, Vasher and Briggs will all be making their first appearance.

The most players the Bears have ever sent to the Pro Bowl was nine following the 1985 Super Bowl championship season when Jimbo Covert, Richard Dent, Dave Duerson, Dan Hampton, Jay Hilgenberg, Jim McMahon, Walter Payton, Mike Singletary and Otis Wilson were honored.

Worst Pro Bowler Ever

Need player my ass.

Coach - "Hey, you need to go get me some donuts or something." :bang

Man I'm still laughing.

What's more f***ed up.

John Shoop getting a head coach interview or Desmond Clark going to the Pro Bowl?

I swear John Shoop has to be some sort of minority, there's no other explanation.

ahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahaha

this is hilarious.

I'd trade Desmond Clark for at least half of the other starting TE's, if not more. I'm a Bears fan and all, but this is absurd.

Well, normally I would say that Desmond Clark must have sold his soul to the devil but even he was shocked that he was named to the Pro Bowl.

Maybe this will hike up his trade value a bit? Angelo can always say, "Well, disregarding his play on the field this year, he was a Pro-Bowl alternate!".

That's one good thing that may come of this.

Was Kellen Winslow II unavailable? B)

lol that says something for the talent level of tight ends, especially in the NFC.

See it was pretty funny when it was announced he was a pro bowl alternate.

But now that he's a real f***ing pro bowler, it's hysterical.

Last time I checked he was trying to help the Poston Brothers recoup his signing bonus. :bang

this just made my day lol..... I still dont know why he does so bad for us... that 1 season he had in Denver he was awesome now with us he is a total scrub.... but now he is a scrub in the pro bowl :cheers

haha wow I've forgotten totally about Kellen Winslow.

Pro Bowl is a joke :puke

all of them are a joke in baseball, basketball, and football......

At least the baseball one is somewhat entertaining..... in basketball they just do highlight reel plays no one really tries to win just look good and in football no one wants to get hurt so it makes it look like an arena game.

Yeah I would have picked Alex Smith of TB before Clark. What's with Urlacher pulling out? Thats lame-o

I think there were a lot of other TE's who would have been deserving instead of Smith, such as Jason Witten or Chris Cooley.

I swear John Shoop has to be some sort of minority, there's no other explanation.

Actually I've long said I thought Shoop would make a good coach. He wasn't near the s***ty offensive coordinator everyone made him out to be. Hell, his offense wasn't all that crappy when we got to the playoffs. It was conservative and took advantage of our very strong defense (which is sometimes what you want).

You could make a case that with a good defense you don't want to get too agressive because you end up putting your defense in a tough spot, plus you don't give them proper rest.

Shoop did have his flaws, but he's a very good mind and a hard worker and I know Jon Gruden is a big fan of his. I think the Raiders could do far worse (and have most of the time) than Shoop. I think he'll prove most Bear fans wrong.

The flaw with his offenses were that we absolutely had s*** for talent. Its the truth.

Reminds me of the year that the NL had to use Joe Girardi to start the All Star game.

He's a good athlete. I think part of the reason he struggles is that he's had injury problems in Chicago, but he's also (this year) not in an offense that really uses the tight end. Just think, Turner had guys like Wetnight on his squad back in the mid 90's and he used them on ocassion, but the TE just doesn't seem to be a major part of his attack.

I actually think Clark is perfectly capable, unless of course Turner wants to make the TE a feature part of this offense. I'd rather use a 1st round pick on a WR or a CB than on a TE because i honestly don't see us using that TE too much.

That and this is an insanely deep TE draft. Keep Clark around another year, snag a TE in the 2nd or 3rd round and let them develop. Its not like we are in dire need of cap relief (we have a ton of space and aren't going to use most of it). Plus Clark isn't making a ton of money anyway.

Imagine if Clark actually gets a salary bonus for being a "Pro Bowler." :puke

This reminds me of when Vlade Divac made the all-star team a few years back.

When they add Clark as a needs player, did they leave out the "Special" part?
