yeah i mean i was upset because we lost a winnable game...but i take solace in the fact that we lost because of our defense, and frankly that is something that just won't happen very often this season...tonight was just one of those games that is gonna happen every so often in a given year...get em tomorrow...niemann and vazquez

This is exactly what I was thinking after the game. I think, even though we lost tonight, it's more encouraging to see Floyd pitch the way he did today than had he s*** the bed and we had pulled out some 9-8 win.

 

It sucks, but tonight was very encouraging on several fronts, including both Quentin and Joe (nice to see him snap out of his mini-funk he was in).

 

As for Bobby, the pitch selection didn't get him as much as the actual pitch did. That breaking ball he threw to Roberts was quite a bit more flat than the one he made Jones look foolish on. If he throws the sharp curve, the best Roberts can probably do is barely get a piece and foul it off. Bobby will be just fine.

yeah bobby left the curve ball up and over the plate...when its 0-2 youd like to see it low and out of hte zone...i mean tonight markakis hit a ball 2 inches off the plate for a HR, they scored on a couple errors and then bobby stunk a bit....it stung not to win, but hey we lost, like you said more to actually feel good about than bad about from that game...move on to tomorrow

I don't think we're going to be thinking of Gavin as our 5th starter much longer.

Hard to say when danks and the count both looked very good in their last starts.

Tonight just shows the value of a good bullpen.

 

Unforunately tonight they didn't get the job done, but we can't really complain at how they've gone so far.

 

The key will be, this type of thing needs to become a one off, and not the norm as we saw last season as they started out great, but then fell into a complete hole.

 

Another good outing for Gavin, which was very encouraging to see, and Quentin's OPS would be above .900 now I think.

finding the positive: the tigers lost, the twins lost and the royals are currently losing.. So, we didn't lose much, if any ground within the division with this loss.

Damn, tough lose but we are bound to lose every once in awhile... oh yea, Quentin is legit sauce.

Uribe is pathetic with the bat, can we DH for the 2nd baseman and let the pitcher hit. At least the pitcher might take more pitches.

 

 

I agree with you and Fathom on this one. This guy has so much talent, but once the bell rang for the season opener he went back to the old Juan Uribe. Absolutely horrible with the bat so far.

 

But, I am concerned that we saw a return to last seasons relief woes. What happened to Jenks 100 MPH fastball? He has fallen in love with the curve ball that I thought tonight especially looked pretty feeble. We wasted a great effort by Floyd and then to have back to back jacks to retake the lead 4-2 only to lose like this in the 9th and 10th is pathetic. So we had a bad game I guess and can only hope they rebound tomorrow and don't lose leads like this again

No the issue wasn't Konkero, it was the move everyone for Joe Crede argument at the time.

 

The best reason for trading Kong, he will be a 10 and 5 guy in a few weeks and then will become untradeable. His ability to shut down offensively for months at a time are a bit taxing.

 

 

The weird thing is, it doesn't bother me at all when the other excellent closers in the league blow the rare save. I forget about it instantly and go on to believe that's an excellent pitcher who had one bad night. But when it happens to Jenks, I find myself whining and complaining a lot. Logic-faking the causes in my head, blaming everyone including the offense, etc., worrying unnecessarily and calling for trades. It would seem like I insanely overanalyze anything that doesn't go well for my own favorite team, ignoring the good, and do the exact opposite for ever single other team in baseball, ignoring the bad and hyper focusing on anything they do well.

5 runs is not bad. Im concerned with the effort of the pen today.

10-5 looks worse than 9-4 to me. You are right though. The bullpen cannot save every game. Floyd pitched another stellar game, and Quentin and Crede are providing some pop from the bottom of the order. We are 9-6 yet we have our 3-4 hitters both batting under .180 and Uribe batting .146.

It sucks..but these games will defintely happen over the course of the season. I can accept a bad outing, an error, an O-fer. What I can't stand though is when you don't have the players in the best postion to win the game. Dye simply has no business being out there in the 9th with the lead. We have a suberb glove sitting on the bench. I don't know if it would have mattered in the grand scheme of things, but WTF. Why aren't your best players on the field? That Roberts double in the 9th should not have been. I thought Dye was out of position, took a bad angle, and he's just kinda slow out there. Look at where Markakais was playing on Quentins homer in the 8th compared to where Dye is playing...against the lefty Roberts, in the 9th. Both have probably taken a 3 or 4 strides steps, but this is the first screen capture I could grab when they flash to the outfield.

 

 

 

 

The fact that Linebrink and Jenks had pitched three days in row this early in the season was the reason they were not sharp. If McDougal, Thorton and Masset are only going to pitch in blow outs, it is going ot be along season for the end of that pen.

 

The defense cost them the game. There is no reason for Dye to be playing in a three run game in the 8th, the offensive options are not that bad that should the lead be blown that a Ramirez or Anderson will kill you. Not when Uribe is batting four times a game.

 

The $27M spent on a 3/4 hitters in the line-up is a concern that is not going away any time soon. Sorry, one big hit a week from each is not doing it. This offense is not looking good at all.

 

This weekend will be interesting.

Yup. No one out of the pen really looked sharp, the defense looked disinterested, and the offense minus CQ really didn't do anything. Hopefully we can just chalk it up to a bad night.

It's really hard for a lefty to hit to that gap in Camden Yards now thanks to Markakis and Jones. There really isn't much of a gap, your liner has to fall really quick.
