Ken Rosenthal reports today, that the Sox are still talking to the Reds.

The Jermaine Dye-to-the-Reds discussions continue at a "moderate" level, but for the moment the White Sox continue to plan on Dye being their Opening Day right fielder, according to a major-league source.

A deal for Dye was indeed close before Thanksgiving, the source said, with the White Sox expected to receive right-hander Homer Bailey and perhaps another prospect in return.

The trade, however, stalled in part due to questions about how much the White Sox would pay of Dye's $11.5 million salary next season. The amount they paid would have affected the quality of the second prospect in the deal.

Now, the Reds simply might wait to determine whether they can sign a free-agent outfielder such as Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell at a comparable salary without giving up any players in a trade.

It's now a staring contest. The only reason Williams would deal Dye is because he believes he can get another outfielder to sign with the club. The only reason Jocketty would trade for Dye is because he feels he can't get another outfielder to sign with the club. But, if KW signs an outfielder, he then has to trade Dye below value because the Sox would have no room for him. If Jocketty loses out on the outfielders, he gets boned because the Sox won't deal Dye and he'll have to work with a reclamation project via trade (like Jose Guillen, who the Royals would have to pay a lot for) or via free agency, like Juan Rivera.

The ball is in your court, Walt.

Hmmm… the Reds just got 3 million from the Orioles. I’m assuming we’d be willing to chip in what it would of cost for a Uribe (4.5) So, I’m guessing it’s a fight over roughly 3-4 mill.

I think its more likely a fight over the 2nd prospect. The Sox don't send money out in trades. I'm guessing it is something like...

--Sox want Bailey + good prospect

--Reds say OK, if you give us $4m

--Sox say no, but maybe a lower level prospect instead?

Burrell makes no sense because they have Dunn. Burrell can't play right. That leaves Abreu, which would make sense except he's probably pursued by the Cubs who might over pay for him, especially if they don't get Peavy.

Actually since the company is in bankruptcy they may be able to get more deals done then if Zell was making the decisions. As long as there is a solid business reason for the transaction the court appointed trustee will allow it especially if it increases the odds of the company netting a larger profit.

The team isn't in bankruptcy and the BK trustee has no say over any of this. The Trib's filing does not effect the Cubs, from a legal standpoint.

Almost true. According to Crain's, the sale will still have to clear a bankruptcy judge. But the process itself and the associated financials, supposedly, should be clean of it.

If true, KW must really believe the Free Agent dominos are going to fall very slowly.

Brad Penny will still be around for awhile. There's no rush. We're not getting the top dogs for 3 yrs/ $24 million and that's probably our budget.

I still don't understand anyone's fascination with Brad Penny, other than as someone to go out partying with BA.

Speculation that the White Sox entering the FA market is contingent on a Dye for pitching trade.

Makes sense. Clear Dye's money off the payroll, add a SP and maybe a corner OF'er who's still looking for work in January. Pick up whatever you need by the trade deadline with a re-built farm system if in contention.

Reds are talking to Baldelli and Riviera. Dye trade still in stasis. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/..._agent_out.html. Come on, Kenny. Get moving...

That ship has sailed. The Reds have about 10 mill to spend. And the Whitesox don't move money in the other direction in trades. If they want to trade Dye this offseason is his highest value. Moving him at the deadline in the season will get us 2nd tiered crap. So its either move him now, or let it ride.

Pretty much summed it up. The White Sox are done for the offseason.
