Great work for the Bulls. This proves that they don't care about this year, which is the approach we need. Now if they can just dump one of Kirk or Deng, I'll be happy. That's of course assuming they get rid of Tyrus.

I think its entirely possible that the Bulls just wanted to dump Salmons on the first willing team. It seems as if Houston is dragging this TMac thing out WAY too much and asking for too much in return, and the Bulls were having none of it. They know they can't waste time getting in a bidding war over Tmac, nor should they. They still need to move Tyrus Thomas, and possibly one of Deng/Hinrich.

 

They got their guaranteed max contract money out of the way, now they can work to get the extra dough.

There was a report out a short while ago that said the Lakers wont be doing anything at the deadline.

Bulls do not have to move Tyrus they can just non-tender him. If he plays well they could move him for something in the offseason orlet him walk.

The Bulls are trying to get a future 1st and an expiring contract for TT though. Obviously they want some sort of compensation for him.

True, but if things go to plans and they have a successful offseason it really wouldn't matter.

Although the idea of getting rid of these contracts is a great idea for the future, you might want to look at what's happening now. You don't just want to throw this season away. Kirk's a pretty big part of the team now that Salmons is gone. You want somebody in return who can replace a good amount of his production. I don't know if Morrison is capable of that.

Although the idea of getting rid of these contracts is a great idea for the future, you might want to look at what's happening now. You don't just want to throw this season away. Personally couldn't care less about this season. Its nice and all, but I don't care about keeping this team together so we can get bounced in the first round again. All-in for the off-season, its the only chance this team has at becoming a legit contender. Dump every contract you can and go all out with max deals to 2 of the big guys

If the Miami Heat seem a little more nervous Wednesday, this is why. This deal could potentially be huge for the Bulls, even thought they just helped their most serious competitor for the East's last playoff spot get a leg up on them. Chicago could very well miss the postseason as a result of this trade.

 

However, the long-term ramifications are simply too huge to ignore. By dropping the $5.8 million owed to John Salmons next year, Chicago is now in a position to offer a maximum contract to a prospective free agent. Their target is obvious -- the Bulls will make a serious push to get Dwyane Wade.

 

As for the players they received, don't expect much -- both are well past their prime. Kurt Thomas may help a bit with his physical post D and mid-range jump shooting, but the Bulls didn't really need more frontcourt players. In the backcourt, Devin Brown will take Salmons's minutes and rookie James Johnson will likely play more too, but there's no question this is a downgrade from Salmons.

 

Before we continue, one side note here: Many outlets have misreported that Tyrus Thomas needs to be traded for the Bulls to get a max free agent this summer. This isn't true. Thomas has an expiring contract; the Bulls can make him a qualifying offer of $6.3 million to retain his rights as a restricted free agent but are under no obligation to do so. If they don't, he can still re-sign with Chicago as an unrestricted free agent, but the Bulls lose the right to match other offers. Grade: B+

They would actually lose cap space in that deal, since James and Thomas combined ($11M) are less than Harrington ($10M)

I personally don't care if Tyrus is moved or not, he is basically an expired anyway for the Bulls, and if they sign a big time FA, the average fan could care less they let him walk for nothing. The Bulls HAVE to trade Hinrich or Deng though.
