August 27, 200916 yr QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) Why did KW think it was a good idea to trade an everyday player for this ineffective pitcher? Please tell me he doesn't have the type of contract where we'll be unable to dump him for a bag of chips this winter. Everyday player?
August 27, 200916 yr QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) Everyday player? LOL. Just let it go. I went from liking Brandon Pujols to hating him strictly because of this board.
September 2, 200916 yr More ways stats for relievers can be misleading, Thornton got the loss last night. The Sox have now lost 12 straight games in which Pena has pitched, and it’s the fourth one for which he’s been mostly responsible. http://soxmachine.com/sots2009/2009/09/01/...-4-white-sox-3/ Hand him a mop
September 2, 200916 yr QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) Didn't know it was so easy to make four incorrect statement in such a short post. You keep living in dreamland!

September 2, 200916 yr Steve, you are at the second stage. You need to work through the anger and get to bargaining, then depression, and finally acceptance. There is time left this season, and we all will be working through these stages. Some quicker than others.

September 3, 200916 yr Meanwhile, Brandon Allen started tearing it up in Arizona's AAA team -- 12 HRs in 145 ABs, a .413 OBP and .600+ slugging percentage -- and has two HRs in 11 games after being called up, including a 2-run HR off Billingsley tonight, after he'd mowed down the first 13 Diamondbacks.

Wow, that's impressive. Billingsley gets 13 guys out in a row and Allen STILL hit a 2-run HR?

That's a very forgiving comparison. to be fair, when Howard was in AA and AAA, when he was a year older than Brandon Allen, he only hit 46 homers.
September 3, 200916 yr I can't believe Kenny is that dumb to trade an everyday player for a middle relief hack. What was he thinking?

September 3, 200916 yr I'd rather have a everyday power hitting first baseman, cheap, for five years over Tony Pena.
September 3, 200916 yr QUOTE (b-Rye @ Sep 2, 2009 -> 10:46 PM) I'd rather have a everyday power hitting first baseman, cheap, for five years over Tony Pena. I have to admit, while being one of Kenny's biggest supporters, that this one looks like it was a mistake. Even if Pena rebounds and turns into a very effective reliever, I would be extremely tempted to deal PK this offseason, while paying $5 million or so of his salary, and having Allen become our everyday first baseman. He is a power left-handed bat at a position of need. Would have enjoyed watching him develop amongst the other young players developing on this team.
September 3, 200916 yr I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Allen had probably no future with this team, but he was a very, very nice trading chip. We just traded him for the wrong guy.

September 3, 200916 yr This will go down as KW's worst deal ever simply because Pena is so bad and Allen actually has an upside.
September 3, 200916 yr QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 01:29 AM) This will go down as KW's worst deal ever simply because Pena is so bad and Allen actually has an upside. You have apparently not watched Pena pitch. Good stuff. Very little control of it. Pena has a very high upside as a reliever; any pitcher that cannot control what he throws will get lit up. Almost all of September with Coop, an offseason resting, and a Spring Training with Coop may do wonders for him. He might also fail miserably. Brandon Allen might not turn into anything more than a .750 1Bman, which can be found around pretty much any street corner. He might also turn into a Prince Fielder type of hitter. No one knows yet on that front either.
September 3, 200916 yr QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 12:49 AM) Why would you say he had no future with this team? Because he was ready for the big leagues now. Paulie has first locked up, with Kotsay or Fields backing him up next year. Then, in 2011, this club has invested too much to not play Viciedo once he's ready, and since Gordon is here, 3rd is closed to Viciedo. But since Allen was just about ready for the bigs now, he was an attractive trade piece. We could have used him to get someone like Sherrill, or maybe we could have sent him instead of Poreda for Peavy, and we could have used Poreda instead of Pena.
September 3, 200916 yr Or, they could have offered the old guys on waivers earlier and showcased Allen at 1b like Arizona is doing. It's not like Pena would have made much of a difference anyway; if they wanted to get him in the offseason, they could have.

September 3, 200916 yr Nobody could have predicted with 100% accuracy Dye and Konerko falling off so much. As mentioned, Beckham slumping has hurt the team as much as anyone, even though most of the hits he has managed have been pretty darn clutch, like against Sabathia and Nathan. They managed to rally enough to hold off the Twins last year...that, in and of itself, was a minor miracle.
