C-C-C-C-C-Combo Breaker!

Kenny Williams has lost a hell of a lot of chips the last couple years, including to Torotno a few weeks ago.

 

The latter is an opinion. If we're still making poker references, then I'm of the opinion that he merely folded and lost a small blind, but I think he actually took down a small pot. There are possibly some outliers with regards to his 2011 season in the minors, but it's very encouraging that he took the steps forward that he did in his first full year of starting. I think, best case scenario, you are looking at probably a 4-5 WAR pitcher and, worst case, a back of the rotation starter or middle reliever. That's part of the risk of rebuilding. Santos is an extremely talented reliever, but he seemed to have a bit of Brad Lidge to him as well - not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, I'm just saying it.

 

Beyond any of that, the Sox aren't going to really compete this year (BUT PLAY THE GAMES FIRST) but it really has nothing to do with the Santos trade. The Rays turned over pretty much their entire bullpen last year and didn't get a damn thing for any of it and they were just fine. They have a better scouting department and almost certainly a better bullpen manager, but losing one reliever doesn't mean a hell of a lot in the long run, especially since that reliever is being replaced by one who can theoretically be just as good or better than him next year.

 

The biggest piece of the bullpen that needs to be replaced is Sale, and that is going to be damn near impossible. As far as I'm concerned, Santos has already been replaced by Reed.

What does everyone thing of Michael Bowden from the Red Sox as a starting pitching candidate? Sounds like a KW target, being a former first round draft pick that lost hype. He has 4 solid pitches according to this scouting report http://soxprospects.com/players/bowden-michael.htm

 

I'm thinking we could get him and a lower level prospect for Quentin or Bowden could be part of a Danks/Floyd package.

You know, it'll never happen, BUT:

 

It sort of would make sense for the D'Backs to put a package together for Danks, who would be an awesome upgrade for Saunders, and have a really serious pitching staff and be the big favorites in the West. In that situation, it would make sense to make Parra a big piece in the deal and to get De Aza back, who would serve the 4th OF role without sacrificing as much potential.

 

I wouldn't mind it if we got a pitching prospect back too. Parra could really play CF too, it's just Davis is even better defensively.

Even though they re-upped with Overbay, the guy from our roster they could use more than any other is Konerko. Weak position for them, and they need bats.

Goldschmidt is pretty damn promising as a power hitter for them. No need for Konerko

Clearly I'm talking about Parra.

From MLBTR talking about the Reds....."but they continue to search for a closer and a left fielder". If I am Kenny Williams, I am calling up and offering Thornton and Quentin for Devin Mesoraco and others, but I am not so sure that the Reds want to trade Mesoraco after they just traded Grandal. Daniel Corcino seems like the type of guy Kenny would want too.

Reds aren't going to trade Mesoraco now that Grandal got traded. Seems like Kenny really misjudged this market, as Santos would have been someone you have to think Reds would have been interested in.

If the Sox don't make a move in the next week or so, I'm going to start getting nervous. We have three pieces that should be moved before the start of the season and a couple more that might make sense to move now as well. Still having all these players by the start of January will eat away some of our leverage as teams will know we need to move salary.

If trades are to be made we have plenty of time. Those that need the pieces and don't have them around ST will be the ones in a pickle not us. Plus we do not have to move our people.

I don't think he misjudged anything. In his mind he got a future MLB starting pitcher, which is usually what he is looking for in trades. He's got young position players all over the diamond, whereas most of his pitching staff will be leaving or will become expensive in the next couple of years. Any trades he makes will focus around young pitching.

Who are these young players? Morel, Beckham and Viciedo...and that's it, in my mind.

Yes we do. We have to move Danks and Quentin at the very least. You realize they aren't signing extensions with the White Sox? Letting them go without compensation is a complete mismanagement of assets and should reflect negatively on KW. Good GMs can recognize/develop talent, great GM's know the precise moment to cash in those chips.

With the Rangers getting Yu, look for Toronto to go after Gio. Garza is a serious option too as AA likes that he's pitched successfully in the AL East already. It seems to me that the Yankees and Red Sox are the two remaining teams that are most likely to be interested in Danks and or Floyd.

If I was KW, I would just hold pretty much right now. Unless you get a deal that you cannot pass up. Team salary has been shaved a lot recently .... no more Teahen, EJax, Buehrle, Pierre, Santos, Vizquel.

 

The AL Central is weak right now except for the Tigers. And who knows what they will be like next year. They ended the season pretty banged up. Al Al is going to be out at least half the season. Not impressed with the Royals, Indians, or Twins rosters right now.

 

Seriously, we can compete in this weak division with the team that we have now. If guys like Beckham, Peavy, Rios and Dunn can rebound from last year, we will be looking good. Morel, DeAza, Flowers, Viciedo, Reed, Molina give us some promising young players.

With the Rangers out of the running, we really got to hope we can make a deal with the Yankees. I think they'd be more likely to acquire a guy on a 1 year deal than most teams, simply because they have the resources necessary to resign such a player if they so choose.
