I was thinking the same thing. Rare you see a young short stop who can field his position and get on base at a decent clip just let go. I would think he is at worst a good utility guy off the bench. I imagine the Astros had 1st waiver claim and snatched him right up too. Lucky them.

 

Let me try to explain this. First, Jackson being taken off the 40 was a surprise. However, what needs to be considered is that the Cardinals will have a new SS, presumably by Chirstmas. Behind that new SS, there is Kozma and behind him is Greg Garcia, who was just added to the 40 today. The Cardinals have Juan Herrera right behind them and they drafted three more SS in this year's draft and they will all have assignments to minor league clubs next year. Given Jackson's age and the fact that they didn't deem him likely to play precipitated the release.

 

The Cardinals will not keep someone who they feel will get a better chance elsewhere. I wouldn't be at all surprised if his represntatives asked to be removed from the 40 to give him a chance elsewhere.

You can make the case, but I don't know if it's "equally strong." Tired or not, he has bad control and his secondary offerings are below average pitches. I personally think he should dump the screwball altogether -- it's got such a soft, predictable break and he doesn't seem to be able to keep it down in the zone with any level of consistency.

He quit using his screwball when he went to the bullpen because he needed more time in warmups to find his release point. He just throws an odd one here and there now. Maybe, with an offseason of being relatively certain that he gets the rotation spot he deserves, he will be able to implement his screwgie. What is amazing is that he almost never used a changeup before that and turned it into a useable pitch on the fly a year after pulling a screwball out of his ass and making that into a good pitch. His ability to learn pitches as well as use his fastball to get outs has been astounding.

Are you able to provide any more details? Which pitcher(s)? What teams are they talking to? What are the Sox asking for?

Maybe should try a split finger pitch then. A lot of pitchers have sucess with it. I can't even remember the last guy the Sox had who threw one unless you count Contrersas and his forkball. Doesn't seem like they teach it in the Sox system perhaps because it's hard on the elbow and shoulder ?

While I agree they won't win any WS next year, I definitely think they'll be competitive

The splitter is a dying pitch. Many seem to feel it hurts their arm and fastball.

They must mean depth as in minor league OF help. Their OF is already full and their #1 prospect is waiting in the wings.

Not advocating trading for Freese but the guy was injured last year. Even so, he has never had a season where he was less than average.
