2014-2015 NFL Football thread

Featured Replies

That's not fair to Manziel. Johnny Football isn't a bad dude. He's immature and a bit of a punk sometimes. He likes to party and do what every 21 year old kid likes to do. Winston on the other hand is a (probable) rapist, stole from a grocery store, shoved a ref on the field, etc. By all accounts, he thinks he's above the law. Manziel hasn't done any of that type of stuff.

In answer to Balta's original question: no, I would not want Winston at all. I would find him incredibly hard to root for because of the off-the-field stuff, which is unfortunate because I think he's very good on the field.

If I am judging them as people, Winston is far worse than Johnny, but if I'm evaluating them as quarterbacks, they both have character issues that are going to impact their ability to be successful in the NFL at that position. I look at both of them and all I can think of is Ryan Leaf.

I always hope when you pass on someone like Winston in the draft that you dont end up being a footnote on that players history, like Randy Moss.

A quarter to a third of Cutlers good stats came at the end of blowout games

That's probably not accurate (just anecdotal), and I could just as easily say that Rodgers put up the bulk of his statistics in blowouts where the defense very likely quit against him. Were Rivers' stats put up at the end of games?

Point is, statistically, Cutler measures up with most non-elite qbs. He's paid as elite, but some of that was cap maneuvering. I'm pretty sure his salary goes down pretty drastically the nex two seasons.

Two totally different positions. Much harder for a QB with character issues to succeed than a WR.

That's something I've always wondered about some of the criticism/downplaying I've heard of the Bears offensive successes last year. I've heard "well if you take out defensive scores they weren't ranked as high..." but it's never clear if they're taking defensive scores out for everyone or just the Bears.

Thats right. I knew they had two bigtime picks trading down, and Brees was an almost-first rounder

Not so funny story from the 2001 draft: Bears had a deal to move up from #8 and take Ladainian Tomlinson. Bears ownership didn't want to pay the high contract cost. Then they were settled on taking Deuce McAllister at #8. David Terrell fell to them and after doing no background work on Terrell, they drafted him instead. Later, Bears had opportunity to move back into round 1 and take McAllister. Ownership didn't want to pay two 1st round picks and the deal never happened. Bears ended up with David Terrell and Anthony Thomas.

I'll Play:

Car over Ari

Pit over Bal

Cin over Indy

Dal over Det

NE over Cin

Pit over Den

Sea over Car

GB over Dal

NE over Den

Sea over GB

Sea over NE

Now that would be shocking. :D

It's the American Idol version of the playoffs. The judges can save one loser each round.

Guys like Cam Newton come far and between but your point remains.

Was Cam ever really suspected of being a bad person or just violating stupid NCAA rules?

He did steal a laptop, which is why he got kicked out of Florida. But after that, he never had any run-ins with the law that I'm aware of.

I think a DeCosta (Ravens GM) and Kubiak (Ravens OC) would be best case scenario for the Bears GM & HC job. I have always been a fan of the Ravens drafts, hence why they are consistently good. And Kubiak brings HC experience who is dedicated to the run, runs 2 TE sets and a lot of play action.

Agreed.

One of the things I've always admired about the Lakers (even though they are screwed now), for the best example, or maybe also Yankees, is how they totally behave with the attitude of "if you are the best in the league, you are going to be a Laker". And things just kind of fall in line.

There is no reason a flagship franchise like the Bears should not have that attitude, except they've been a bumbling, poorly performing franchise for 25 years and 25 years before that.

But they have the resources to say to DeCosta "we will give you whatever amount you want, and the power to create the franchise in your image with 100% support. Go".

If he turns down, fine, but why not go after that? He's clearly the creme de la creme.

I forgot that coach/GM searches are kind of boring because there's really not that many rumors.

I definitely agree. With a guy like DeCosta, you can't just offer him the GM job imo. He has done such a great job with the Ravens that I think you would have to offer him a presidency role along with high money to sway him out of Baltimore.

Doug Marrone opted out of his contract. LOL what I don't even

according to this rumor page, the Bears asked permission to talk to a number

of people in a search for their new GM.

So...Marrone interviewing with Bears

Good sign but you pretty much have to.

My guess is he will take the Jets if offered.

My only thought is he must have known major interest from a party before leaving.

Maybe not, but it's interesting.

Edit: nvm, didn't realize jets were lined up.

on an wish list kinda of post, who in your opinion would be a

good fix for the coach for the Bears.

barring the GM search that is.

Edited by LDF

Have fun with punting on 4th and 1 from the opponent's 39!

So, yesterday we heard DeCosta declined Jets interview. I'm guessing it's a matter of time with the Bears before declined.

For as much as I want him, he clearly will be a GM in his mind, and likely if he gets that job he'll be a gm for 10-15 years. There's so much to do on the bears he may only get his dream job for 3-5 years.

he probably looks at Reggie McKenzie and thinks he made a huge mistake.

What's so great about Doug Marrone?
