I see him getting anywhere between 3-4 years at 8 or 9 a year. I think I'd just bring back Cotts who was solid the past two years.

Good very good

When talking about taking advantage of the cheap starting rotation we have I think the bullpen is where it makes the most sense to allocate the "big money" and Andrew Miller makes the most sense of anyone available. Sign me up.

I would think almost every team is interested in him

Yeah. Wouldn't be shocked to see him get $10 mill a season even. Relievers are so inconsistent I don't think he'd be worth the investment.

This is the one spot I'm ok with paying the premium price. He's unlikely to be worth whatever contract he'll get because teams will pay for the fact that they need someone to fill this position, but we're talking about a left handed reliever who fills a need who is 29 and has a 2.57 ERA the last 3 years while pitching in Boston.

We have the need, we clearly need a lefty this year to have any shot, Surkamp and Snodgress might be able to contribute but they're not good enough reasons to not do this kind of move.

I want this guy in our pen. Steal him from Detroit.

He's the #1 closer on the market I'd want the Sox to go after....even if he's never done it before. His stuff is that good.

Really like this guy, He'll cost but I think he'll be worth the price. Hope we sign him

We both agree, so it must be a good idea.

Isn't K-Rod on the market? Either way, if we signed him, I'd hope that his role would just be a LHRP and not the closer. I'd want him to be the guy we bring in to face Joe Mauer and those lefties late in games, sort of like what Scott Downs was supposed to do this year.

No one is going to spend 8-10 mill on a loogy. He wouldn't have to be the closer but he'd certainly be used for more than just tough lefties.

Maybe not specifically a LOOGY, but I wouldn't want him to pitch an inning with a lefty and two righties due up. Maybe he could pitch a full inning if there are at least two lefties due up, but who knows what Robin would do.

FWIW, Wade Davis' contract option was picked up at $7 or $7.5 million.

I think that actually dates back to his deal with the Rays when he was a back-end starter, though.

HOPING someone who's never really been a closer can just morph into that role only works about 1/5th of the time. The problem for that other 80% is what happens when they return to relieving after losing the closer's spot. It seemed Matt Thornton never recovered with the White Sox. Part of that was general deterioration in his fastball, but in my mind he was never the same after giving up that monster homer to Thome in 2010 after appearing in the All-Star game that July.

Throwing $lol + ∞years at relief pitching via free agency is a terrifying way to build a team. I think I prefer the "throw enough s*** at a wall and some is bound to stick" method.

I agree. Bring in as many lefties on minor league deals as possible (try to bring one in for Beckham as the ptbnl from that deal).

We tried this going into the 2007 season and to a lesser extent coming into last year.

The problem is the only one out of about 10-12 lefties who was worth a damn ended up being traded by KW to the Red Sox, Javier Lopez.

We also acquired Sisco and Mike Myers. There was the unforgettable Heath Phillips. Boone Logan. Dewon Day.

If Andrew Miller was the only missing piece I'd be all in for him. Having holes at DH, LF (maybe RF since we don't really know what Avi is yet) and having to find a starter or two, he's not the missing piece.

Umm...you should probably check Miller's splits stats. He's really good against righties.

He might not be THE missing piece but a guy like him certainly is A missing piece.

I can't believe after watching that s*** show of a bullpen we put out there last year some of you guys don't wanna significantly upgrade it.

I say that same thing about Victor Martinez. I take a fundamentally different position here, I would pay the market rate for this guy even if he's not the last piece. He's young enough and fills an important enough weakness that I'd be willing to do that even if he's not the last piece.

Whoops, sure did. Carry on.

Jose Abreu is the one I should have replied to with those numbers. He's much more than a loogy.
