With Robertson and Samardzjia on the team now, what's the plan with Rodon?

 

Does anyone else think that if he pitches well enough in Spring Training to earn a rotation spot, the Sox start him in the rotation as he might provide the best shot at the playoffs or wait to try and delay his clock?

I think it hinges alot with that happens to Danks. If they can trade him, get rid of his salary then Rodon has a clear spot in the rotation but if he's on this team come ST I think Rodon should come up midseason

Perhaps let him develop?

I think it's extremely unlikely Rodon has any shot of pitching his way onto the roster in spring training. The fact that he's never pitched more than 130 innings in a season ought to have told us that anyway, even if he'd made the roster we'd be in the "do we shut him down now" mess.

 

I don't think this should change the plans for him at all. He starts in AA/AAA, pitches as a starter, comes up if there's an injury or when he's clearly ready, better than everyone down there, and better than whatever we have in slots 4/5 in the rotation. That's what I said a month+ ago and all this does is make it harder for him to have a spot.

Some have reported if he spends a couple weeks in Charlotte, it means an extra year of control for the White Sox. If that is true, it probably makes little sense he doesn't spend the first couple weeks in Charlotte.

See what you have with Noesi and Danks first. I'd rather have Rodon at the end of the season, and I'm not sure he can pitch a full year. I do wonder if we'd be willing to delay his season by a month.

Let him pitch limited innings in AAA until June and if he's ready he joins the rotation. No need to rush anything

I say let him develop some in the minors for two months and then call him up for Noesi or a Danks trade.

 

This doesn't change anything with Rodon. Leave him down to get the extra year of control. Don't worry about Super II status, but the extra year is key. I'd start him in Birmingham with the rest of our prospects. Get him a few starts in Charlotte and get him to the big leagues by June.

I do think our starting pitching depth will be the downfall of this team, if anything. Sale will miss starts and youre probably going to need 6-7 guys making double digit starts. Good chance that means Rienzo and Carroll if he's around combine for say 15 starts. Last year Carroll, Rienzo, Bassitt, Johnson, Paulino, and Leesman made 45 starts. Danks made 32 on top of that. Obviously shark will clean a lot of that up. Hopefully Rodon can too.

This is the key. He is only going to pitch 160-175 effectively. How do you want to sparse them out. If you put him in the rotation at the beginning of the season, he will be gassed in August and could hurt the team.

 

My vote would be to sart him in Charlotte and limit his innings early on. It's not out of the possibility that the Sox will have him in the Chicago pen for the first 1/4 of the season then by July work him into the rotation. He will learn to use his pitches to get MLB hitters out and move on to the rotation. I think that is what the Sox will do, although I think starting in the minors would be better.

I don't think Rodon sniffs the majors until at least June or whatever month when the arb timer restarts and even then I doubt they promote him up

Let him pitch out of the pen for 6-8 weeks then stretch him out and make him a starter. Thats the best way to keep his innings down that would still allow him to be a big factor toward the end of the season.

I was so damn mad when he got left off the roster. I wanted him on it instead of Damaso though but either way, no complaints in hindsight ha.

Keep him on a tight inning cap in the minors for the first half of the season, then bring him up around the all star break to finish the season with the big league club. If the club makes the postseason, he could slide into the bullpen to limit innings and give an extra LHRP.

This is actually a plausible and defensible plan. I suppose the budget-conscious thing could be to start in Charlotte and if he succeeds there as expected, call him up and have him do some relief appearances at first to lighten the load. I don't love that plan, though, just because I think it is hard on a lot of guys to switch back and forth to and from the rotation.

The only person Rodon affects is Noesi. Noesi is now pitching for his job.

In my opinion, the best course of action with Rodon is to assume he's not in the 2015 plan. Start him in the minors and make him force a decision if it comes to it.

 

If Noesi is on the team in March, he has a spot in the rotation. Probably the 5th.

Yes, and he said multiple inning relief roles too.

The only person Rodon affects is Noesi. Noesi is now pitching for his job.

 

Honestly, I think it is Danks. If the Sox are truly going for it, they cant have Danks at the back of the rotation giving up the homerun at a record pace.
