December 29, 201411 yr On the heels of another "Ozzie Guillen wants back in" article, and Konerko getting his number retired next summer, should the Sox give #13 out again? After playing for the Sox for 13 years and then managing them to a World Series victory, I thought it was just a matter of time. For me, the Sox have too many numbers retired in the first place. I'd say no to #13 being retired ever. What say you? Edited December 29, 201411 yr by flavum
December 29, 201411 yr At the very least, #13 shouldn't be worn unless a player gets approval from Ozzie himself.
December 29, 201411 yr Retired numbers should be reserved for the best of the best. At minimum borderline HOF type guys. 13 seasons as a below average player and 8 seasons as an average manager does not warrant number retirement even if he did help bring the Sox a World Series. Now if Ventura can help bring us a World Series, I'd be all for his number being retired at some point as he had one hell of a career with the Sox and a World Series would just be the icing on the cake. December 29, 201411 yr QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 29, 2014 -> 12:53 PM) Managers shouldn't wear jerseys I agree. I think there should be different clothing for coaches and the manager, even if they've done it for this long. You don't see football coaches dressing up in pads or NBA coaches dressing up in a jersey and shorts. I do not believe this will ever change because people do not believe it to be an issue, but it's really weird when you get to thinking about it.

I kind of agree with this, but I guess the only counterpoint I can think of is that baseball is really the only sport where the manager and coaches are actually in the field of play at times. What's weirder, to have a manager/coach in a jersey or to have your managers and coaches out on the field in a suit and tie? Edited December 29, 201411 yr by lasttriptotulsa

What's weirder, to have a manager/coach in a jersey or to have your managers and coaches out on the field in a suit and tie? While that's true, football and basketball coaches do go out onto the field/floor quite a bit, even though they're not supposed to (except football coaches at the end of games). How much more of it stems from the fact that, until 30 or so years ago, it wasn't uncommon to see player/managers in baseball?
December 29, 201411 yr Author Ventura and Guillen are both good examples of why I like the idea of a White Sox Hall of Fame, rather than number retirement. (Baines and Pierce too, but too late for that). And #6 being unofficially retired for Charley Lau has been really stupid too.

And #6 being unofficially retired for Charley Lau has been really stupid too. i understand the merry meant of retiring a number, but and i may be a minority here, are the standards of getting their number retired by the org???? i say no for those reason. what has he really done on the field as a player to warrant this honor.
December 30, 201411 yr No reason it should be out of circulation. His was one of 30 or so numbers on the WS team; and he was a pretty good player for a long time. None of which warrants number retirement.
December 30, 201411 yr No. It should be shelved forever. The man managed the White Sox to a WS title for gawd sakes. Sometimes I think people think that's an easy accomplishment on the South Side. It's almost impossible, folks, and he did it!
December 30, 201411 yr It's going to be retired with #14. They left two spots on the wall of retired numbers.

Greg, i never have had a problem with you but think about this and >>>> then by that way of thinking, every member of the team should be retired. for pete sake, they were on the team that won the world series. wait, the grounds keeper, they should have a statue, for pete sake they were the grounds keeper of the team that won a WS. about the vendors, the parking agents. etc..... see, where does this stop.

Dude, horible logic. That's like saying there's no difference between a Kentucky Durby Winner and the gatesmen... Or no difference between the porn star and a condom, for lack of a better analogy.
December 30, 201411 yr Like him or not, he's on the Sox Mt. Rushmore from the most memorable era in Sox history. 56 and 12 should be retired as well. I know Ozzie hate is cool, though, so yeah, maybe they should start issuing it to non-roster invitees and bat-boys. Better yet; maybe they can retroactively change Toby Hall's number to 13 and then retire it, but with only Toby Hall's name attached to get the point across.

December 30, 201411 yr I would imagine 13 is available. It is not a popular number. Ozzie wore it for Dave Concepcion.
December 30, 201411 yr Seems to me there's a difference between retiring it altogether and just keeping it out of circulation for a while as a sign of respect; perhaps even for as long as the "main wearer" is alive. I'd be fine with either for 13, but would vote to retire 56 and 14 first. Edited December 30, 201411 yr by PlaySumFnJurny
December 30, 201411 yr Ozzie made several crucial calls during the playoffs which were arguably the most important calls of their respective games. bringing in El Duque with the bases loaded and no outs.... deciding to bring Buehrle in as a closer for the first time ever.... I could go on. His importance to that playoff run and outcome cannot be equated with 'any other member of that team' that is utterly foolish logic.
