Sounds like there's a huge disconnect between the movie and expectations. Not sure why people thought it'd be as graphic as the book, and without the explicit nature of the sex scenes, what's left? My understanding is that the books are really poorly written and there's not much substance. So you're making a movie on poor substance without the sizzle that attracted people to it.

Whatever happened to the sequels to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? The American version?

I thought it was awful, the 2nd Fincher movie I disliked, so Hollywood decided not to make the other two.

Wow, really? I thought the first one was really good. I loved the whole tone/look of it.

For the same reason that The Golden Compass never had a sequel.

Or, more recently, Stephanie Meyer's(Twilight series) YA book-based "The Host" completely bombed...or John Carter, etc.

Personally, I enjoyed those books, but they do tend to be very dark in nature...they aren't easily adapted to the screen. Maybe, in hindsight, Rapace was TOO good (Swedish film)...but that still doesn't mean it will connect to a mainstream audience, any more than "Under the Skin" could earn boffo box office.

50 Shades of Grey will sink like the Titanic in the second week, probably down 75%. Then the big question becomes whether a sequel will be profitable enough. And should they go all-out and do an NC-17 sequel and cut the budget by 75%, not put it into theatres via wide release and hope to make it back by DVD sales/netflix/rentals, etc.

The issue I hear from casting agents is that young American actors now are very self-conscious of their image. So rather than playing truthful and themselves—it might be because of so much cable, so much stuff on the internet—they’re almost kind of capturing an image of what they think they should be, rather than playing it.

Another example I have: Wall Street II and Solitary Man, each of which called for a “New York City sophisticated 17-19 year old, somewhat spoiled, wealthy girl.” Once again, we ended up with Imogen Poots and Carey Mulligan, two British actresses playing pretty American roles...they (British) happen to be pretty well-trained, disciplined actors, not concerned about their images as to just playing the role and the part.

Interesting Michael Douglas interview...

Rapace was hot in that movie and she played it really good, Mara did a great job also.

i hated the american movie, had really potential esp with the cast. but come on, too much embellishment and liberties with the story.

Kingsman! Holy lord was that some good s***.

From all the reviews, it wouldn't be a surprise at all if that movie passed 50 Shades next weekend.

Nice mini-comeback for Colin Firth. Have always enjoyed his performances, The King's Speech being the last really memorable one...and Love, Actually my favorite of his. A Single Man was really strong, too, but the subject matter made some uncomfortable.

i really don't trust reviews to be an index of watching movies.

but it does seem to have a great potential to be a very good movie.

Roger Moore James Bond camp meets Kick-Ass, meets Quentin Tarantino, with a bad guy played by Samuel L Jackson who lisps heavily and is terrified of blood. It's perfect. Haha

Jupiter Ascending .

Wachowskis need to stop. Like now.

i just couldn't bare watching the whole stupid movie. i stop with something like 29 mins left. all my by the movie gods was this movie awful.

problem was, for me, it might have had potential. but come on, it just didn't make any sense. i can see how they put this crap together and hooked up with some decent asian actors and a hot asian actress.... just hoping for that european and anian movie market money.

i wasted my time d/l'ing and then watching it.

~~~ edit, oops, i meant blackhat the movie, i am now watching JA.
Kick Ass 2 was pretty unwatchable...unfortunately.
Am looking forward to this one, though. The "new" actor (sidekick/mentee?) to Firth is getting lots of kudos as well.
As far as Blackhat goes, normally Mann's a much better director.
I think this movie was made as Hemsworth was just starting to get more notoriety...as far as Tang Wei goes, she's a big star in China but I haven't seen any mention at all of this movie coming out here. She's most famous for starting her career with an Ang Lee movie named Lust/Caution that ended up getting her banned from filming in the mainland because of its NC-17 scenes. It was a big career risk for a debut movie, opposing China's leading male actor, but it really worked out for her in the end.
At any rate, she's trying to become a "crossover" star and no Asian actress has fully succeeded because of the English issues....Maggie Q and Lucy Liu to a lesser extent, and the performances of Fan Bing Bing and Li Bing Bing in movies like Transformers 4, Iron Man and X-Men have left a lot to be desired. Audiences here knew they were being pandered to, rather than respected.
Finding Mr. Right/Beijing Meets Sleepless in Seattle
This is one of Tang Wei's earlier attempts at the US market. She ended up marrying her Korean co-star, fwiw.
ya.... she is banned and all her movies from china b/c of her making that movie.... she showed her ummmm many wonderful assets, which is, to put it simply as being great.
wow. i am now a fan.
back to the movie, it is a shame, it had a chance but they screwed it up.
oh,
i just saw John Wick. it was ok, nothing great, a 1 1/2 - 2 in stars. a brain dead movie, lots of actions and violence.
the guy in it played the org Girl with a dragon tatoo. bloomquest. (sp)
Nyqvist, Swedish actor....who has become more famous for playing a Mission Impossible (the one in Dubai) villain since then.
John Wick is awesome...it's 50X better than Taken 2/3 or The Equalizer. For me, it's comparable to Man On Fire, although Denzel gets the nod because he's a much better actor. Keanu's kind of an anti-actor, whereas he can only not get in the way of a really good movie, but he can't make a so-so or bad movie bearable to watch.
As for Tang Wei, she's really become China mainstream popular and the ban on filming in the mainland was lifted awhile ago.
Finally watched Gone Girl last night.
I think if you didn't see it right away it was probably sort of ruined for you.
Or it was already ruined when you read the book...since the whole movie turns on that plot twist.
That's why I am hesitating about learning anything more about The Walking Dead animated series...would rather be surprised.
Speaking of strange documentaries, you have The Wolfpack...about a Lower East Side/Manhattan family (it seems they are half-Peruvian/Hare Krishna and half Eastern European by the names) whose parents lock up all the children in the house and home school them...and their only interactions with the outside world are through re-enacting movies and some tv programs.
Strange that you say that LDF, I surprisingly have heard nothing but great things about John Wick.
i have different reason to like or dislike movies. john wick as i said earlier, is not a oscar movie, and the actor is far from a great actor. but when i am tired, bored, and wants to watch a brain dead movie for entertainment reason. this movie is it. now it is a 1 time kind of movie, but since i got it .... umm free, then it was a nice way to kill 2 hrs at work and do my work in which i did not need the computer.
