I dont think the Sox will be willing to take the hit of 100% tax penalty that it will take to sign this guy. I really dont see there being any other way to get him. The Cubs have seem to throw everything but the kitchen sink at these international players without a care of the penalty so I would bet they will probably get him too.

 

I was totally shocked when the Red Sox threw $72M at Rusney Castillo . I think in that thread I called it nuts .

When are the LAD, Cubs, and SF no longer ble to sign because of going over their international limits? Next July 2nd?

If they are serious, I wish they had played it smarter and taken full advantage of the 2 year penalty they'd get.

 

It is likely to only be a one year penalty with the new CBA coming in the mean time.

 

Yeah, they didn't envision teams taking this approach. The rules will change next time for sure.

I would imagine if they go to an INTL draft, they think up a penalty, such as no first round pick, no first and second round pick, etc, which is commisserate with how far over the cap they went, remembering that there are few different levels of being over. The first level is a just a fine.

Atlanta is not going to sign him, they plan to go way over in 2016 and have Maitan already locked up.

Supposedly if he was draft eligible this year, he probably would have been the #1 pick in the MLB draft.

Sign him and the other guys will find playing time somewhere else. He's also only 20 so would probably need some time in the minors.

Do that it takes and sign this guy if he's worth it.

You know, it's possible that this guy isn't as impressive as people thought. The fact that he signed for so little tells me that 29 teams weren't willing to go higher.

 

The Sox should save their pennies and go big next year.

i didn't think any signing was going to happen, as sad as it is. the owners doesn't see a need for him. they have some depth in the minors and that is all they are going to do. hope that they develop. they will not spend extra money if they don't have too.

 

i really do hope the prospect really develop esp hawkins.

That is bizarre. That is a fraction of the expected price.

Yes. IIRC, they were under $500k left before they hit the penalty phase and lost out on two years worth of signings.
