The thing is he was hitting in the high .300's in AAA. He can succeed with his approach against lesser talent, so sending him down doesn't help. When a 24 year old can't catch up to a 94 mph fastball and swings at pitches that far out of the zone I worry.

Sending him down could help IF he got implicit instructions to try a different batting stance or move away from the plate or lower his hands or try a leg kick . He's not only swinging at bad pitches outside but inside too.

Confirming that the Sox are buyers really doesnt mean they are going to wind up making any big moves. Its really not even news to me at this point being they have been on a tear lately. They are usually buyers this time of year and sometimes they just dont have the pieces to get what they want. So we will see.

I'm excited. Nightengale is very reliable. I agree with all of you saying that we're working on something big.

Good news indeed even though Sox fans already knew. The Sox have a trade history with Oakland and Reddick's bat/glove would be a perfect fit for what the Sox are looking for. Come on Rick, make it happen!

Reddick is my favorite name people have been reporting (aside from puig)

I would imagine Reddick and Carlos Gomez would cost about the same who would you rather have? I think I rather have Carlos Gomez of the two.

Ken Rosenthal says the Phillies last move may be to move Ben Revere and an AL club is said to be interested. I would love that, although I have no idea how he has been this year. He has speed for days and plays a good d.

Pitch framing wasn't even a thing until a few years ago. It means almost nothing. It's all about who is pitching to you and the pitchers rep with umps for throwing strikes. When pitchers reps and the inconsistency of umps calling balls and strikes is taken into consideration pitch framing just doesn't stack up as viable. Just because its a sabr-stat doesn't mean it should automatically be trusted as a "thing".

Flowers is huge for a catcher and I hardly ever see him handle a ball in the dirt flawlessly. He can block some but is high on the list of passed balls allowed which to me is more reliable than pitch framing.

If it is so dependent on pitchers, how come, catching many of the same pitchers, Soto ranks 38th?

I do think if they had lasers determining balls and strikes and made pitch framing moot, Flowers probably wouldn't be around.

He's okay and he'd be cheap to get but I hope we'd target somebody with more power.

If it's exactly the same price, probably would take Gomez just for 2016.

Flowers absolutely is a good framer and it does matter. One thing I like that he does, is he usually starts low, I think it helps get borderline low pitches, and gives the pitchers confidence that if they miss on a pitch that should be low, they can miss down and still get a strike.

The Sox have Shuck. Revere would be OK, but if the Sox are going to do something, I would hope it would be for an actual need.

The lineup needs power bad.

Ya nothing great but he is batting .298 with a HR and 26 RBIs. Has 24 SBs in 29 try's and has 101 hits, he doesn't strke out a lot. Plays the whole outfield and well, good guy to have on the bench if he's cheap.

His 101 hits would be third on the team behind Abreu and Melky

OOOh our backup catcher is ranked 38th while hardly playing. I guess I'll just jump on the pitch framing bandwagon now. Welcome all to Small Sample Size Theater.

And what does being ranked 38th in pitch framing even mean ? Does it mean he gets an average of .5 strikes called per game while the top 5 get 3 or 4 ? Does Soto ever catch Sale or Quintana ? Need a lot more facts if you're going to throw an arbitrary number like 38th in pitch framing out there.

It would be cool if they could snag Lawrie and Reddick, shift Saladino to 1st as heir apparent to SS next season and dump LaRoche somewhere.

Lawrie may be worse than Conor was playing 3rd

Although Flowers may be a bit better as a defensive catcher, I would still take Soto most of that time. More productive outs (aka less strikeouts) & a might better bat.

This whole framing thing is quite overblown, IMO.

He exclusively catches Samardzija, so Flowers misses some of that, and they get the same relievers. Extra strikes lead to extra outs. Dimiss it all you want, but apparently the people who make the decisions believe in it.

Not sure why Soto can't just take our DH ABs

Josh Reddick is another guy who is absolutely atrocious against lefty pitching. He is a platoon hitter .

He's also having a career year.

Whether he can repeat it is far from a sure thing.

Lawrie - well he would add to the team's tat collection.

Revere is Shuck

Pitch framing is absolutely a legitimate skill.

Because if Flowers gets hurt or needs to be pinch-run for, etc. we'd have to move Soto to catcher, thus eliminating the DH and forcing our pitchers to hit.

I can see us acquiring Adam Lind. Now that the Cardinals are out of the running for him, our chances are better. He'd be a great LaRoche replacement, and the price won't be too high.

Uhhh....Lawrie is a very good defender.
