**Water-Cooler Thread (TV stuff)**
I watched one episode of The Hawk with Will Ferrell and it was absolutely awful. Had to be the most unfunny shows of all time. The Tom Hanks WWII documentary is really good.

7/20/2026 - Sox @ Rangers, 7:05 CDT - Fedde v. DeGrom
DeGrom hasn’t given up more than 2 ER in his last three starts but that has been facing pansy offenses like the angels, marlins, and indians. He’s been getting roughed up with around 6 ER when facing teams like the padres and Yankees. I say we hang a 5 spot on him in the 5th or 6th inning. If Feddie can limit the damage to 4 runs or less we should be good to go. And hopefully the rest of the league keeps up what happened today… all other AL central teams lose while our Sox win! LETS FUCKING GO BOYS!! Give me a 5 game divisional lead by 8/1!

WTF - On chisox.com I saw a headline about Hagen Smith and the article was saying something about him striking out 9 in 4 2/3…. So I look at the box score and see he went 1IP with more walks than strikeouts in relief. Talk about a gut punch. God damn it.

Gonzo & Eisert Traded to Pirates for Comp Pick and Jaden Woods
Gonzo never sniffed the top 100. Lux had top 5 prospect pedigree. They're not comparable. Jim Gallis was amazed that Gonzo was all the Pirates could get for that pick. Lux also wasn't traded on the eve of the draft. Supply and demand.

Gonzo & Eisert Traded to Pirates for Comp Pick and Jaden Woods
But if we waited a year, he’d be hitting in the minors during that time. There was nowhere for him to play on the big league club. The only way his stock goes up is with production in the majors, and he wasn’t going to get that with us.

Gonzo & Eisert Traded to Pirates for Comp Pick and Jaden Woods
I see people keep saying this, but we basically used the slot savings at #34 to pay our 5th round pick slot. I actually like the 5th round pick too, but doesn’t change my thoughts here. I just think Jacob should have commanded more than this. For example, two years of Gavix Lux brought back a Comp A pick plus Mike Sirota for the Dodgers. This is potentially 6+ years of control of a guy who has flashed an ability to both impact the baseball and make good swing decisions at the major league and can play anywhere in the infield. The historical performance of guys selected in the Comp A round suggest we likely lose this trade and a 5th slot pick doesn’t really change the calculus. Again, I like Landon Thome and love this draft class. Just think we look back on this trade and say “damn we could have gotten a lot more if we waited a year to trade Jacob”. Hopefully I’m wrong on all of this though.

Gonzo & Eisert Traded to Pirates for Comp Pick and Jaden Woods
Amazing that this keeps getting overlooked. This wasn't Gonzalez for Thome straight up no matter how many times people say it was. Was this a good trade or a lousy trade? I have absolutely no idea. Could this end up biting them in the ass with Gonzo having a solid career while the Sox draft picks fizzle out? Maybe. The Sox are definitely taking a gamble here since draft picks, especially after the 1st round, are rarely a slam dunk. I remember when HS pitchers Matt Thompson and Andrew Dalquist were going to be great picks for the Sox I just think some of the arguments are being a bit disingenuous by saying this was simply Gonzo for Thome. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the guys the Sox were able to draft with the extra money we got from Pittsburgh will make this an overall win of a trade. Someone is welcome to bump this in 3 years and laugh at this post when all of our picks are out of baseball and Jacob Gonzalez is a starter in the All-Star Game.

I got the max on youtube (5000) and I keep cutting songs I have for songs I missed. I do run across some every now and than that are 5 years old or less that I like. Here's one that I like for some reason. Some of the live versions are worth watching too.

He was pretty darn good and could go deep but I do think he would benefit from how they handle things. Give him and opener and then let him go 6-7. He through innings. And me putting Detmers in same sentence as Javy is really such an utter disgrace to Javy and his 45 WAR. Detmer is a guy who was a high pick with a good arm who has yet to be anything above being a serviceable starter…yet people want to give up 6 years of cost controlled high end prospects…no thank you. Now if we want to give up two from a group of Bergolla, Quero, Mason Adams, Ky Bush, or Oppor…that I think is a more realistic price tag. Not sure if I’d sell low on Quero like that but I’d see fair value here (for the record I think Quero is going to have a good long career).

I was thinking about Vasquez a couple of days ago. I was thinking he’d be a valuable player in today’s game, if I’m recalling him correctly. I seem to remember he’d look like an All-Star through 5 innings, basically twice through the order, then get rocked the third time through. If he could do that today, he’d be much more valuable than he was 20 years ago. Or maybe I’m remembering wrong and if that’s the case I’m sure I’ll be corrected quickly. 😂

What am I missing? Guy has almost 100 starts and has put up less than 6 WAR and almost half would be in this season (he is on track for just under 3 WAR). Why am I giving up a top 10 pick like Carlson for him plus something else or a guy like McDougall who I personally think has front of the rotation potential (with health the big question mark) ? If we want to sell Hagen because we think there is more bust…maybe…although I’d be more prone to use Hagen and something else for a player more impactful. I guess I don’t get all these people calling Detmers a front of the rotation guy…he makes Javy Vasquez look like a stud.

I’m not counting on him…just listing him as one of four depth options for the #5 spot in the rotation.

The only true “headliners” we have are Carlos, Fauske, Hagen, & McDougal, so I’d consider all those guys as legit possibilities of being moved come August 1st. The Sox will also need to thin out the 40 man roster further, including guys who will need to be protected. I love me some Mason Adams, but he’s a primetime candidate to be traded for a SP. Bergolla also fits the billing, but harder to get fair value for him given his injury status. The same applies to Ky Bush and to a lesser extent Thorpe, who I think they’d like to hold onto for next year. I think Gabe Davis is far more likely to be moved than Oppor, who you’d be selling for pennies on the dollar. He’s the best pitching prospect available after the guys mentioned above and Sandlin, who is might be too important for depth purposes to trade. Pierre George & Matthew LaCombe could also be of interest as a secondary pieces as guys with big stuff but reliever profiles for now. Beyond that, I think Boston Smith, Colby Shelton, & Kyle Lodise all could get moved due to upper level redundancies. Mogollon fits the same billing, but serves as a younger alternate who provides more upside but less proximity.

Lots of Sox expats including Jake Burger, Tyler Alexander, Ben Peoples, and, the pride of Pedro Grifol, .300 hitter Nicky Lopez, who actually is hitting over .300.

Twitter/Reddit burned me to the stake for that tweet but that’s what I was trying to say. I guess I should’ve specified by saying backup catcher. I just can’t handle much more of Drew Romo. He’s not even good enough defensively to make up for his nonexistent bat.

Gavin Fien, drafted 2 spots after Carlson, was the main piece for Mackenzie Gore, a similar pitcher (Gore probably had somewhat better performance overall). They did throw in several other guys. Seemed like an overpay by Texas. Then I look at the Crochet trade. Crochet was an ace and he essentially netted us 2 Carlsons plus 2 other pieces. I would just think that Carlson should be the max for Detmers, who's really been a lackluster pitcher until this season. Also, I would try to win this division with a 6 man rotation; keep them fresh and Martin seems to do better with extra rest.

I agree. You don’t do something stupid, but you got to add a SP.

A RHH backup maybe. On a related note, Teel’s bat speed is way up fwiw.
