Tough to argue with that. But if that’s how we are going to evaluate a trade, then what are we even doing here? Nobody we get in a return will work out.

If I just found out we traded Colas for Vargas, I’d be very happy with that. Even though both have faded, I think Vargas has always been more highly regarded, and he’s having a much better year than Colas in 2024. I understand your point in that prospects can fade, but Vargas can still be a very good player.

Agreed. I’d be pretty happy with that trade. So the disgust with this trade is Fedde for a top 30-40ish prospect from last year. That seems like it’s light a prospect, but when you combine it with the good return for Kopech and Pham, it’s not as crazy as many are saying. I’d say overall, it’s a slightly underwhelming return, but not a disaster. But what I can’t figure out is how the Cards managed to get Fedde and Pham for Edman. That’s the bigger head scratcher, not the return that the Sox got.

Let’s say Fedde and Vargas weren’t in this trade. How would everyone feel about Kopech and Pham for Perez and Albertus?

What if the Dodgers get Edman and give up Alex Freeland? The Cards then get Fedde, while giving up Edman and something else to the Sox. Sox obviously give up Fedde and get back Freeland and whatever else from the Cardinals to make it work. No clue if this makes sense. Just thinking out loud.

If Pedro gets canned, would an interim manager finish out the year? Or would we look to bring in someone new immediately?

I hope this results in no team offering a legitimate trade package over the next year or so, Crochet pitching like the best pitcher in baseball and staying healthy, and JR finally realizing it’s time to offer him an extension this time next year. Yes I know, I can dream.

I highly doubt there has been any offer for Crochet or Robert that has been worth taking.

What if all trade offers are extremely light because nobody wants to take the injury risk? Would you still trade him while you can? I know I sound like a broken record with the questions I’m asking in my last few posts, but I’m genuinely curious what others would do if they were in charge. If you get a good offer, you obviously take it. But let’s assume all offers are way too light. There doesn’t seem to be a good option. Extending him seems to be too risky, and waiting until the offseason might not help because teams could still be nervous about a future injury. I’m guessing at that point, teams would rather wait until the 2025 deadline to see how his arm holds up during the first half of next year.

I’d be curious what @ptatc thinks the chances of a future injury would be if they shut down Crochet for the season after this weekend.

Let’s assume this is true that everyone knows the Sox are pushing Crochet past accepted limits, and therefore all trade offers are extremely light. I’m curious what everyone here would do if you were Getz? Keep him and try to trade him during the offseason? If that becomes the plan, won’t teams still be nervous about acquiring him because of how much he was pushed this year?

How did Cannon look today? I was only came to watch one inning (B3), and he didn't look sharp (luckily the double play limited the damage). He didn’t seem to have any command in that inning.

I can totally see what you’re saying now that I read it again, but that’s not how I interpreted it when I first read it. I read it as Crochet has a plan to continue pitching as a starter until the end of the season, but that plan would need to extend into October if he’s traded to a playoff team. Not saying I’m correct. That’s just how I first interpreted it.

This sounds like something someone would say about a different organization after leaving the Sox. That’s encouraging.

I love a good Pal appearance, especially near the deadline. What’s your prediction on whether we keep or trade Crochet/Robert? Think both are gone this time next week?

It’s hard to argue with this, but then my feelings toward both get in the way. I like Crochet so much more than Robert. If we traded Robert for a “meh” return and extended Crochet, I’d be thrilled. If it was the other way around, I’d be furious. And that’s with me fully understanding that this team needs offense.

I’d rather pick 10th when the draft class is great and 5th when the draft class is weak than the other way around.

Looks like he divided by at-bats instead of plate appearances to calculate the percentages. Someone else made that same mistake in a Wolkow discussion the other day.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. But the part about high school kids asking for more than ever before got me wondering.
