I also prefer to rotate guys in DH so as to use the whole roster for versatility. A permanent DH works when you have a Frank Thomas but there aren't many of those.

We can easily afford to add $100 million per year in payroll. Even if we elect to pay a Cole type in the vicinity of $30 million per year that still leaves $70 million per year for a lesser starter, a right fielder and several very good relievers and several nice extensions. I think Jerry is prepared to spend the money but probably not all his eggs in just a couple of baskets. That's not necessarily wrong.

My preference would be to keep Jose for another year or two. Vaughn will be ready and Jose will be getting older. There is certainly no reason to be trading Jose for a box of rocks. Until reinforcements get here someone has to knock in some runs.

I'm happy with whatever happens in the Colome trade or keep scenario. Getting overpaid for Colome or having him on next years team are both acceptable outcomes.

If an extension could be reached in the offseason...it could be reached now. Reasonable people are needed on both sides of the negotiation. Both sides want him up yesterday. Both sides don't want to lose millions for a few months of somewhat meaningless games. An actuary could work out the numbers that would be fair to everyone. Baseball has become annoying with all the contract crap that needs to be worked through. Some people say Robert has so much money that he doesn't need to sign an extension. JR has lots more money and he doesn't need Robert on the White Sox in order to eat well himself. In other words...neither side is going to get what they want because of economic advantage. They will get what they both want by negotiating in good faith with each other.
