  2. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 15, 2005 -> 06:51 AM) I just noticed that after looking at their respective numbers. It must feel pretty brutal to have both of your top pitching prospects stuggle mightily when they get bumped up from A to AA. Check the league though too... I beleive that is the Texas League. Since there's no Sox affiliates there, I don't really pay too much attention, but I believe it's a heavily hitter friendly league.. I believe PCL and TEX league are well known for inflating offensive stats, and the FSL is well know for deflating ERAs.
  3. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 15, 2005 -> 06:19 AM) I thought this part of the column was most interesting: That quote is a broad over-simplification. The Sox have done everything right RE: Garland and contracts throughout his career. He was considered and underachiever, the type of pitcher you would be more likely to non-tender rather than sign to a long term deal. They kept avoiding arbitration through one year deals, with the intention to sign him long-term should he ever break through. -- BUT, his breakthrough came at such a time -- when young free-agent pitchers are making gobs and gobs of money, and entering his final year of arbitration -- that the Sox have no leverage. Garland is right to decline any offer of less than the 5 years/55M that Burnett got. If the Sox think that Garland is simply "taking it out on them," they're flat wrong. He has the upper-hand, and he will make a fair decision. Just like when the Sox had the upper hand in his first 5 years, they made the fair decision.
  4. QUOTE(3E8 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 08:04 PM) Many more of Blalock's chances involve making a throw, which opens more opportunity for error. Also, the average groundball to third is a more difficult play than the average flyball to left. Like to add I'd rather have Joe Crede than Blalock. Do you see how many caveats we've had to place on the error statistic? What a waste. I was just playing devils advocate.
  5. Juevos doesn't understand that El Duque and Viz have no trade value. The deal was Young for Vazquez. With El Duque, Viz, and cash thrown in to make it a minimal hit to the Sox '06 salary. Duque is old 'n busted. Viz is not teh new hotness. In fact, he was in danger of being non-tendered.
  6. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 06:33 PM) In the outfield... QUOTE(sircaffey @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 06:34 PM) A tad bit more impressive at 3B...Just a smidge. Sorry it took so long for a reply. I was makin dinner. Anywho... Let's take a look at total chances. Blalock had 411 total chances in '05... let's be nice and make his 50 game streak equal to 1/3 of the season and assume even distribution of chances. That means he had about 137 chances during his streak. Lee had 293 chances in '04.
  7. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 06:28 PM) Blalock is NOT that bad defensively. He had 50 some games in a row without an error. Carlos Lee went a full season without one.
  8. What does Potsy have to say about the deal? Seriously though... That would make us super left-handed. The only right-handers we would have would be Dye, Kong, Iggy and Uribe. It would also make the Macquisition look pretty silly too. Remove Crede/Blalock from the equation and you're onto something.

  10. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:51 PM) Yay, both of my AAP's gone in one offseason quick adopt nick lemon
  11. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 12:04 AM) Its too bad Edmonds isn't a few years younger cause I'd suggest a deal for him (with one of the starters) cause you know the Cards are looking for pitching. Also, just want to say, doesn't this still leave open the possibility of a Garland for Abreu deal or something along those lines as well (if the Sox wanted to get crazy with payroll). Plus considering they are getting Duque off the books, it wouldn't be a huge increase in Abreu (just saying this name cause everyone's been talking about him over the off-season). Garland for Abreu? Me LIKEY!
  12. Your post got me thinking, what organizations are "diamond hunters" (obviously this list is flawed, as I'm making broad generalizations) NYY, NYM, BAL, BOS, LAA, LAD, and the Cubs are out... They Just try to outspend everyone. TOR probably joined the club this offseason. PIT, KC are just dumb and cheap. COLO is dumb because they come up with a new plan every year, and will never attempt to stick with a plan. TB and FLA are cheap, but try to develop inhouse talent through scouting. Teams who I would place solidly in the "diamond hunters" category are MIN, CLE, US, OAK, MIL. We may have even graduated from this group by having enough scratch to retain Konerko. That would put us in the same group as SEA and Philly who are a little from column A and a little from Column B. TEX is probably a diamond hunter now, but I only have one deal to base that on. SD and SF look to be fielding a AARP team. Are old players undervalued? maybe. ATL suceed on the strength of their scouting, and the magic of their pitching coach. (I don't know if that replicable) I'm missing a bunch from the NL, but I think it's safe to say that less than 1/3 of MLB is out there looking to find the undervalued players.
  13. That's the funniest thing I've read all day... BUT A quick google search to find the source... tells me it's the Weekly World News. I wonder if this was bat boy trying to date bat mom.
  14. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) All gm's do that though cheat. Everyone is always looking for diamonds in the rough I don't think that has anything to do with moneyball. Well then you should read the book again.
  15. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 03:47 PM) Well, I don't think pitching was undervalued (see: Russ Ortiz, Carl Pavano), but otherwise that argument is true and makes sense. Correct. Pitching is never undervalued, but Kenny highlighted aquiring guys who were undervalued. Garcia was nearly non-tendered 6 months before we got him. Then Kenny signed him to a below-market deal. Contreras was aquired for a pitcher who signed a non-guaranteed minor league deal just 18 months prior, and got some money thrown in to make his salary below market. Add Jenks, Hermanson, Politte -- all undervalued, and his approach seems a little more "moneyball"
  16. QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 07:10 PM) How about just playing it out with Garland and maybe he will come to his senses and accept the deal that the Sox have on the table. No. Coming to his senses wouldn't be signing a deal right now. No agent in his right mind would allow that. Given the current market, Garland could be due 6yrs/$70 at free agency next year. He's going to make about $7M this year no matter what. So he can either go to arbitration, then free agency, and make about $77M over 7 years; or he can sign a 3yr/30M deal with the Sox, delaying his free agency by two years in the process. Now which would you do?
  17. QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 03:15 PM) Haha, guilt by association. which raises the question.... Whither Marion Jones.
  18. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 10:22 AM) http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/newssentinel/...ts/13397268.htm From this casual observer. There appears to be far more people in attendence when it's held in Chicago. It looked pretty desolate last time it was in Indy
  19. You should click on more ads for free porn. Those usually clean up your computer real good. Sorta like a forest fire enriching the soil for next century's aspens.
  20. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 11:30 PM) Well, with the way Ozzie managed the bullpen last season I think some people are worried he is going to waste Cotts on just one or two lefty batters. But how does bringing in another lefty like your boy Walker help that? If anything that only enables Ozzie to make that decision. Don't give Ozzie the second lefty, and he'll be forced to only use Cotts in higher leverage situations vs. lefties.
  21. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 09:36 PM) wow. im starting to get nervous about the white sox' need for a second lefty out of the pen... Why? What about pitching with your left hand makes players more qualified for a job at the major league level?
  22. Note to Willie: At no point does quoting White Sox Josh ever help your argument. On the rare occasion that I've agreed with him, I've found myself questioning my position on that particular issue.
  23. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) Bull.f***ing.s***. Orton didnt have a HORRIBLE game for Bear standards(not saying much) but Orton had all the time in world out there today. The O-line played great. Unless you wanted to gain positive yardage between the RT and LT
  24. The QB made of glass with less career TDs than Ryan Fitzpatrick is our savior!
  25. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 02:59 PM) I've been saying this all throughout the winning streak. The defense was going to have an off day and the question would be could the offense step up. Well, Kyle Orton answered that one for us today. Because we all know 21 points given up by the defense is SOOOOOOO insurmountable. You're still not getting it. It's not a singular player. If I was charting the game, I would say the Stillers ran for about 150 of their rush yards between the tackles, and allowed 0 sacks. The bears got about 20 of their rush yards between the tackles, and allowed 3 sacks. The point of attack was dominated on both sides of the ball by the Stillers. Orton has nothing to do with that. What you saw today was one football team imposing it's will on the other. Even when the bears were on their streak -- wait, I should say after Thomas Jones got injured -- they haven't been a power running team. They've been a finesse rushing team. AND even a finesse defensive team. They've relied on defensive speed more than anything. That was exploited today in the adverse conditions where the bears had to chop their steps to keep their footing. They couldn't fly to the ball. -- The Bears are a turf team right now. They got beat in the snow by a team that was better equiped to play in those conditions. There's not much your QB is going to do about that. See: Peyton in Foxboro
