  1. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 03:52 PM) Gary Matthews Jr. Plays a good CF, can switch hit, and would be a solid back of the order bat. He's leading off for a first place team. He's not going anywhere.
  2. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) I remember when this originally was being announced that they were voting on a set site that a majority of the B10 coaches like Indy over Chicago. They probably asked that in '05. Nobody wanted to face Illinois at the UC in '05. But who was afraid of IU & PU the last two seasons, no matter the venue?
  3. Wow. That's hard to believe. There has been a stark contrast in the number of butts in the seats when the tourney is in Chicago compared to when it's in Indy. I know ticket brokers aren't happy, that's for sure.
  4. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) Just saw this on espn.com. Apparently Suppan is going for his 100th win even though Reyes is pitching. Well Reyes isn't pitching. He was optioned to AAA Memphis for, wait for it, wait for it, Timo Perez. Suppan is the starter today.
  5. He's doing about as well as Jeremy Reed.
  6. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 07:10 PM) They have the videos up already? Can you put a link to them up? I can't link directly to them on Soxtalk, but you should be able to figure it out from this link.
  7. QUOTE(Jim Spencer @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 09:07 PM) Tomorrow a couple of veterans go: Tim Redding vs Jose Lima If Fields doesn't hit 2 or more HRs off of Lima, he's not ready.
  8. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 04:11 PM) Would that mean Jordan Walden is out of the question? I, for one, would like to see someone who can throw hard in the organization. I know he can supposedly throw hard, but I was very underwhelmed by the very short clip that I saw of him on MLB.com
  9. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 10:21 AM) Note the BA article says "confirmed" signings. It might be wise to see what happens over the next few days. Contracts could be in place but physicals or other details may be preventing an announcement. I note that Jim, but I emailed Brooks, Reifert, and all the beat writers pestering them this week. All they've told me was the two Broward kids.
  10. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 01:00 AM) So Flores didn't get signed? It appears that the Sox sat on their purse strings, letting Flores, Garcia, and La Framboise go back into the draft or off to 4-year schools. (and I'm not one who's known to criticize the front office for lack of expenditures.) If I was a betting man, I'd look for them to take a "reach" in the first round this year, signing somebody who will take less than slot money.
  11. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 12:57 AM) Gload is the worst defensive outfielder in baseball history. That dates back to 1869. I honestly find this funny. How come Ross Gload is judged so harshly based on 200 innings 2 years ago, when we were running out guys like Timo and Borchard, yet Pablo Ozuna gets a free pass for playing the same heartbreakingly bad OF for 150 innings the last two seasons?
  12. QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 12:42 AM) FSU was winning 18-0 in the 8th before the game got suspended because of lightning; they will continue it tomorrow. If they're able to hold that lead, we should draft some of their relievers.
  13. Even I can cheer for Timo getting hit in the head.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 06:38 PM) Yep, Thome is day-to-day with a strained groin. AJP is batting 3rd tonight. Good news, out 3rd hitter has a .347/.383/.488 line against right-handed pitching this seaosn. Bad news: he's .190/.261/.238 w/RISP -- GIDP to end the first anyone? oddly, he's .391/.436/.540 with both of his HRs when the bases are empty.
  15. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 04:26 PM) Some kids will pan out, others won't. Some pitchers hurt their arms, some don't. Some kids mature and progress, others fall off the map. This is all that needs to be said. When you're talking about kids from the latin countries, you're quite literally talking about KIDS. These are players who are signed at age 16, equivalent to Sophmores in HS. You think the draft is a crap shoot, try projecting a poor 15 year old rail thin shortstop who uses a broomhandle for a bat. I know I wouldn't want the task of scouting a JV high-school game trying to predict who will be a major leaguer. We're talking about kids who are going to take 6 years minimum in your system to reach the majors, and more likely 8 before they ever establish themselves. You wanna know why Minnesota has Liriano? It's because SF couldn't keep him healthy and on the field. The attrition rate for pitchers from latin america has to be incredible. I have no data to back me up, but you have to figure that big league clubs can, at the very least, take a pass on players who get injured in the states between age 16-18, and sometimes until age 21, thanks to the draft system. That has to make some difference in the success rate of drafted players versus those signed as babies.
  16. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 03:47 PM) If we concentrate on 1 guy, I think we can do it. Cardinal fans do it all the time Not saying we have more fans than the cardinals, but with that population they have over there, and own the balloting every year, I think we can make a run with Dye. Chicago Population 2,783,726 ST Louis 396,685 Cardinal players get in regardless of the popularity. If they have the stats, they are in. Every year. We are the World Champs. Dye has arguably the best stats of any AL outfielder . He is definately leaps and bounds ahead of Damon. We have plenty of time to get the World Series MVP to start the All star game. How many Red Sox and Yankee players do the Cards have to top to get in?
  17. Save your time.... Either Ozzie appoints him, or he's on the 32nd man ballot. Then we'll get him in. There's no way he starts, don't bother.
  18. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 02:47 PM) Flawed logic is a b****. Last year through May: Cotts: 3.38 Vs 3.22 now Vizcaino: 6.46 Vs 5.28 of McCarthy Shingo: 5.97 Vs 3.80 Jenks now You can't use full season stats for one and only 2 months for the other, it makes absolutely no sense. Who can match Hermanson's 0.82 ERA? What about Politte's 1.77 ERA? Heck even Damaso had an ERA of 2.29....
  19. Threat Down: 3: Jon Garland 2: Revolving door bullpen 1: Bears
  20. These new and improved banners have a terrible record.
  21. Can he pitch? Maybe we should trade for him.
  22. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 03:45 PM) So are you arguing that Everett played Center Field because of his defense, or that Ned Yost is roughly as stupid as Jerry Manuel? Bob.Melvin.
  23. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 03:34 PM) Um, Everett was hitting back then back then. Rowand wasn't. What advantage did Brady Freaking Clark have over Pods? Dude. Grow up. Rowand hit like a banshee once he came off the DL. He hit .361/.410/.667 from the time he came off the DL until Everett was acquired, and .381/.408/.629 until the end of the season. But yeah, he wasn't hitting.
