Good on Getz’ part then for holding firm. Good on Mike Elias for getting an ace with that underwhelming return.

Sox trade Cristian Mena to Arizona for OF Dominic Fletcher

I trust Josh Barfield on this one and like the move. No more Gavin Sheets or Oscar Colas. Also I’m probably in the minority here but I think Benintendi is gonna have a really good year this year and gonna shut some people up. -
Orioles Acquire Corbin Burnes for Ortiz/Hall/34th Pick

Good on Getz for not budging and standing his ground. Kjerstad and Westburg would have been the exact return needed to give up on 2 full seasons of a Cy-Young Candidate to ignite the “re-tool”. Good on Mike Elias for finding a better deal. That’s why he’s built, arguably, the most talented organization in baseball -

They have him for 2 full seasons. If he was a FA after this season, maybe. But if Cease can remain healthy, and doesn’t regress, which again I’m pretty confident in him having a solid season, Getz will get a haul for him come the deadline when more than half the league is looking for starting pitching, let alone, beyond half a seasons worth of control. Cease is worth more than Joey Ortiz, DL Hall, and a Colton Cowser who may have not even been on the table, I think @Y2Jimmy mentioned Elias balked at a similar offer at the deadline -

Getz only overplayed his hand if Cease either gets hurt or regresses. Cool with him not budging and remaining firm on his price. -

Probably wasn’t much better than what the Brewers got for Burnes. I highly doubt Kjerstad was on the table. And that’s the main piece I would have needed back in return -

It’s only a blow if a deal was actually close for Cease which seemingly it never was. I’m sure Getz knew what was available, good on him for not budging. I get most of us wanted a RF and 2B to kickstart this “re-tool” and the O’s assuming they were ready to play ball and go hard after Cease made a ton of sense, the Sox aren’t a RF and 2B away from winning a division. Let Cease cook with a better game caller and better defense behind him and let the contenders (O’s included) come calling at the deadline. Good on the O’s for fleecing the Brewers. -
There will always be an offer on the table for Cease that is better than the one the O’s gave up fo Burnes. Once Cease pitches the 1st half of the season like a Cy Young candidate, plenty of teams will come calling still.

Cool with me, that return is incredibly underwhelming.
-
Especially if they lose out on Montgomery.. Heyman is on at 2pm CST on that Bleacher Report app, fully expecting him to say that Dylan Cease may or may not be traded
-
If only the owners would agree to a floor lol.
-
Maybe it’s just me, and maybe there’s more to it, but little things like Michael Lorenzen who is coming off a pretty solid year being forced to have to throw a bullpen session for interested teams tells me how much penny pinching is going on in baseball. The MLB offseasons continue to just suck.

Really at this point it’s all a waiting game, until we hear deal is close or the White Sox X account breaks the news we’re all SOL here.
-
Yeah he’s saying nothing more than we know already, they’re waiting
-
Not saying if I were the Marlins I’d do this but pretty sure this tells you how the Marlins feel about Mike Elias offering them Jorge Mateo or Joey Ortiz for Luzardo or Braxton Garrett https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/01/marlins-rumors-adalberto-mondesi-free-agent.html?utm_source=twitter

I agree
-
I doubt it, he doesn’t have it in him
-
The only thing stopping Mike Elias from trading for Dylan Cease is Mike Elias. Ownership won’t allow Elias to spend on Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery.
-
I think he really wants Cease but he like many other GMs were expecting Getz, as a first time GM, to give in by now. I think eventually a deal gets done with Baltimore, they’ve made the most sense for a year now.
-
If Mayo is the ask, fine, if a trade with the O’s goes down as long as one of Mayo/Kjerstad + Westburg, I’m golden. Otherwise regardless of what a certain few have said about the negatives of keeping Cease, Chris Getz feels otherwise so we have no choice but to be cool with letting Dylan cook with Maldonado and Bannister. More teams will be ready to jump come the deadline, Mike Elias doesn’t have the cajones to do it right now
-
Yeah they’re trippin over there now, if I’m the Marlins GM and that’s their offer I’m deleting Mike Elias’ phone number. Mayo/Basallo headline.
-
Not enough for Chris Getz
-
He would be yes
-
Cool, let them then.
