  1. The Thunder front office probably pulled off the best feat in sports history with that team considering how tiny a market. Incredible regular season record proves postseason was no fluke. Not sure how they worked the salary thing but they have great players and apparently aren't making Thunder owners go broke. Some tank lovers will tell me they tanked/rebuilt to get this good. I dunno about that. Hopefully somebody will write a piece on how they got this good. Greg doesn't merely accept they did the tank/rebuild thing. They have some players who other teams passed on, etc. Whenever I hear "Thunder" I think of thunder buddies in the underrated movie, "Ted."
  2. Funny how Sheets turned out to be a better trade piece for the opposing team than Robert will be. Robert is an abysmal hitter/good fielder. I don't see a change of venue saving him like Sheets.
  3. Nice pick up though by Getz in Houser.
  4. Man we got clobbered today. Yesterday musta been the deal where the Jays took us lightly. They have such a much better team. Did anybody watch the Cub highlights? It must have been gale force winds blowing out. Simple fly balls were flying out of that place.
  5. However 10 homers. As you know I've bought into the lift and pull thing in assessing value.
  6. Gavin Sheets is a fan fave in San Diego. Hitterish with a good organization. The fans apparently chant "Holy Sheets" when he comes up to the box. Good for Gavin.
  7. That isn't happening. The Sox are too cheap to win pennants. Isbia could change that but it may take 5-10 years after his taking over to win an ALCS.
  8. That's who he is, what he does now. He didn't like that 2023 season when he had five homers. He'll hit 20 again this year like last year if he stays healthy.
  9. Mabe Beni will beat out Vargas as our all star selection.
  10. Beni and Robert having good nights.
  11. I had a couple questions and thought Vargas deserved his own thread since he is starting to distance himself as a possible star. Do you think Vargas is a potential star? Has he passed Robert as our top everyday player? And potential player? Or instead of vaulting from a .235 hitter with 10 homers and 35 RBI get into a skid that puts him where most of our players are: .210, no power, no clutch hits? What do you say? Is 25 year old Vargas a super stud? Should we start to get excited and look forward to his at bats? I would say he is close to emerging as a guy you'd pay to watch play. Forgive me for starting a new thread but it seemed to me Vargas is close to distinguishing himself as a positive on a team full of negatives. And he could be a feather in Getz's cap.
  12. Have we really lost 8 in a row? That's a significant losing streak. Back when we cared about Ws and Ls we'd be freaking out on here.
  13. I actually supported Sale on this board for chopping up the unis. Those were weird unis and I said if he felt uncomfortable and could hurt his arm he should not wear them. The Sox wouldn't relent so he was right. Disco Demolition Night was probably one of the top three lowest moments in all of sports. The shorts? Yeah a dumb idea. What Veeck did well: Sign Zisk. Hire Nancy. Sit with fans in stands. Put exciting players on the field with no money. Make baseball fun.
  14. That's one of my main beefs. With the tank/rebuild philosophy your team is stripped of all stars. That's no way to win a pennant. Sox don't have one star on the team now. Our star constantly hits under .200. Once in a while he robs a home run in center and "some" fans go nuts like he's an actual star. I don't think Vargas is a star but he's our closest to that with 10 homers.
  15. Holy cow. He last managed in 1969. That's 56 years ago.
  16. As fathom suggests, the Sox are an afterthought. The media bean counters probably are happy ... saving money by scraping by with very little coverage.
  17. No managers truly have a clue. It's all about talent. Venable is just another guy, which is OK. If Ozzie would have taken a couple off season classes on how to deal with the media, he should still be our manager. In those pregame dugout chats he'd get himself in trouble over and over again. But cmon. Name a baseball manager who truly is special. None.
  18. Sox are in love with 30-something stiffs. Somebody should make a list of all the acquisitions of these type guys since the first tank/rebuild. Slater, ugh.
  19. Lars Nootbar? U got to be kidding me. Sounds like a guy who plays for the Bananas.
  20. Tidbits Slater ... see u later; Rojas can't hit a cookie; Noda brings nada; Capra should stick to directing James Stewart films. ... Getz as in wreck.
  21. That was a bad loss. I don't know anything about our bullpen guys so won't assess blame. Back in the day when we blew a game the reliever was well known. Will the Sox win Game Two or lay down?
  22. It's baseball's fault for not contracting these teams that have owners not having the money to compete. Shame on the commish for his silence re. the wrecking of a fine franchise.
  23. The manager should make out his lineup and then call in his coaches and show them the lineup. Last night they'd have laughed and changed it. The losing on purpose grows so old. Anybody in the commissioner's office could figure out the Sox want to lose and punish them accordingly. Frankly I think the franchise should be contracted. Bring an expansion team to town. Call 'em the Chicago Hangwoofems, make Hawk the first manager.
  24. Glad to see the Cardinal hit the HR off Capra. Too often when teams put in position players the guy avoids giving up a bomb. BTW, Cards will take us lightly the rest of the series. You know what dat means? Bet the house on the boys from the south side. Maybe parlay the over with a White Sox win. Lineup today was lousy; skipper figures to use a better one rest of series.
  25. Oklahoma City clearly is the better team. Small market franchise to win it all. ... Haliburton obviously is hurt; the announcers should lay off. Not every incredibly bad performance can be attributed to choking. Game Six: All about heart. OKC is clearly the better team; does Indy really want a game seven? That is the question. They should. They should want to win at home and then the inevitable crushing in game seven. Not sure if I'd bet the house on OKC but I'd be tempted. Too good a team compared to Pacers.
