  1. We don't have a ton of famous alumni at Rice. St. Rita now has the most famous alum or teacher, whatever title you choose in Pope Leo. We have Reilly plus Kevin Cronin, Ed Olczyk, David Diehl, Pete Mackanin, Rico Hill, Michael Massey. That's about it. I'd go with Cronin and Ed as 1-2 in Rice history.
  2. Great win. May record is 6-6? Wow. The worst days are behind us. It's obvious this team is better even with a lotta no-name players. Vargas, Quero and Sosa 7 hits between 'em. We must have a good pitching coach whoever he is. This staff blows on paper but excels in reality. The paper bag days are gone. Sox can compete and yes I still think other teams can't get up for our team cause of how bad the squad has been the past couple seasons. That and improved play and better managing means .500.
  3. As expected, I see some media are scouring over all the past tweets of the delightful Pope brothers trying to get them canceled. I knew I'd only get two days to enjoy the happy, inspiring, positive coverage of the Pope, his bros, and the great city of Chicago.
  4. No offense, and I am not a Royals fan as evidenced by my attending 2 games total the past four seasons, but why do they win once in a while the old fashioned way? Ditto Detroit for gosh sakes and Minnie. All tiny markets. You can't tell me we're THAT poor we can't compete with those woebegone franchises. And yes, Lip, I realize Jerry won't open the wallet. But cmon even you Lip must be furious that we have to trade anybody with a pulse in hopes we land somebody with a stellar heartbeat who can help us win it all in about a 3 year window before they must be traded. This ain't the way to run any business.
  5. Dang it we're never going to contend again if we keep playing the trade game. Saddens me more than maddens me. ... Can't we just enjoy a hot streak of Vaughn, the emergence of Elko and Meidroth and Quero and the Pope?
  6. Nancy Faust plays na na on his home run trot. My gosh what a day. The Sox are back. If Beni was healthy the lineup at least would be way more potent than before. Elko and Nancy Faust. Wow. And the Pope.
  7. Those were the days. Caring enough to be mad after a game. Has been a long time since I actually cared about the Sox final score. Thanks Jerry and everybody for getting this team to the point of total irrelevance. Highlight of this season will be learning the Pope is a Sox fan.
  8. Shouldn't we just acknowledge all managers are about the same. None of 'em know what they are doing really.
  9. These interviews with the two brothers are a riot. "He's my younger brother. When I see him I'm going to take off his hat and give him a noogy." My gosh that's one of the greatest quotes of all time. It seems the Pope was calling his one brother after he got named Pope and the brother had missed two of the Pope's calls. The brother said he was with media all day and he said 'congratulations,' and the pope said 'thank you' and hung up cause he 'wasn't ready for any of that (media)."
  10. Elko, Vaughn, Robert ... are wins coming? Easy win tonight vs. Miami.
  11. Good points, Milk. I was just thinking on a light note: Think of the trips the Pope makes around the world and a lot of times he makes himself available in Rome to chat with groups that visit or priests and even the masses, the public. I'm just going by my vision of the Pope all these years, stoic, somber, blessing people, listening intently, never getting up and doing anything crazy like the Trump dance. What will it be like when regular people in line say to him, "Do you miss that. Chicago pizza and beef?" Or "How bout those White Sox?" Or "who is your favorite Bears player of all time: Wasn't Butkus just great?" How it the pope gonna handle being from America and now having to interact with Americans who stand in line to meet him? I doubt he feels it's too proper to discuss his favorite italian beef and sausage places or his opinion of Leo High School and is that why he picked the name Leo. Wat u think. Will there be too much a temptation to ask the Chicago pope Chicago things?
  12. Amazing that the original fake news report was he was a Cub fan. So the initial reporter had a 50 percent chance of getting it right instead said he was a Cub fan. WGN reached his brother who said he was a SOX fan. Geez, get it right the first time. It's going to be so strange to have a pope from the USA. I wonder if it's sacriligeous to throw out the first ball. Popes often seem so stoic and prim and proper.
  13. To the Ozzie haters out there. If he were our manager the last 3 years it at least woulda been entertaining. He would not calmly take these embarrassing defeats. He'd be all over the highlights kicking butt and turning over postgame food spreads and ripping those who loaf on the team on a nightly basis. ... But no, we can't hire Ozzie. He quit on the team that one year.
  14. So Game Four after getting flogged the first three games, the Sox lose 10-0. Congrats to the new skipper on arguably one of the most embarrassing series during these last 3 pathetic seasons. Six hits? KU got 17? How embarrassing. So KC starts the series 19-16. Now they are skating along at 23-16. I tell you the Sox, despite my takes that the team is improved from last year, still needs to be contracted from the league. It's not fair to have this minor league team affecting the wildcard races. Sox manager should apologize to somebody for today's 10-0 rout. So Robert loafs us into a loss last night and team gets thoroughly annihilated today. Very sad. If I were a gambler I'd have lost a ton of money on this series as I thought the Sox would win 3 or 4 as my take was KC could not get up for this wretched opponent.
  15. Hate to say it but that reflects on the new manager too. When you are as bad as the White Sox you at least need to outwork your opponent and win a few games here and there. We said it last year. Losing all four games of a four game series is difficult to do and it's also again, unfair to teams trying to make a wild card. These 4 wins will really boost the Royals at the detriment of others who don't play the Sox as much.
  16. I know we stink but these lineups seem worse than usual lately. I know Beni is out.
  17. Should that have been a double? Or not.
  18. That is the line of the day/week/month. Wow. Good stuff.
  19. I really thought our improved club could beat KC two or three in this series cause they'd be so overconfident. Darn. Why'd the Sox lose? Fathom had a nice post "I’m so unbelievably tired of having to watch guys like Palacios, Taylor, Maton and Amaya." True dat. Those players are so bad they on a given night are hard to win despite of. Actually should cut all four players now. Nobody should dispute that.
  20. I can only remember one time in baseball history when a player got plunked on the top of the head on a fly ball or pop up. Not a line smash or a ball that takes a wicked hop off the turf but a simple pop/fly. Mine is Jose Canseco who saw a ball go off the top of his head over the RF fence for a homer. Do u think anybody has the info whether those two instances are the only two in baseball history a guy has seen a pop or fly ball plop straight down on his head? p.s. It didn't even seem like it hurt Meidroth at all? You'd think it'd leave a mark. Does Elias know? I still think he's one of the Sox better hitters.
  21. Nancy had to have fun in the summer of 77 with the Hit Men. Lip ... please ask her if that was her favorite year to work or maybe a year they made the playoffs.
  22. That's neat she keeps it real and tells it like it is and doesn't lie or sing the company song. ... Prolly learned that from our great tell it like it is announcers over the years: Harry, Piersall, Stoney, Lou Brock (kidding), JC Martin (kidding).
  23. Great news! She is a top 10 figure in Comiskey Park history or Sox history. ... Hey Lip, since u know her ... did she want to retire? Or did management want to kill the organ music? Is she as nice as she appears to be? Any chance she'd return for more than 1 game a week?
  24. Is Beni hurt? If so too bad cause he's become a real MLB player. He's one of the 4-6 guys on our team I think is MLB caliber.
  25. Ouch. Flat out gave this one away. I was in the car and Royals announcers mocked us giving it away late. Denny Mathews a homer but good announcer said: "I've always said good teams find a way to win in the latter innings; bad teams find a wayu to lose." He called us a bad team Could we have ended it with a DP on that grounder up the middle that the shortstop couldn't corral cleanly where he flipped it wide of Meidroth? I still think we win 1-2 this series. Unless this game crushes the confidence. p.s. Meidroth is a national mockery tonight cause of the ball off the head but I still think he's a fine player/prospect. As embarrassing in series history as when the two Sox fans tackled the Royals first base coach? I remember one time I went to a Sox Royals game at Kauffman (when I used to get mad when we lost) and Sox led 3-0 the whole way and I was so happy, drinking and mocking my friends. Bob Hamelin in the ninth hit a 3-run homer to tie it and we got beat I think in extra innings. Maddest I've ever been at a game.
