QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 08:53 PM) Flowers has pretty much held his own vs last seasons top FA catchers in McCann and Salty. IMO, I would not mind an upgrade because I think he is just too inconsistent. While the overall numbers wind up OK, and he has had some big hits, it seems to be he is just totally worthless for stretches which are too long. Everyone slumps, but Tyler seems to take his to anither level. And I still don't understand going after Martin if you don't think you can win next year. If you think the Sox are at least 2016 or probably 2017 away from contending, paying him all that money to hopefully still be effective at that point is questionable at best. Martin in the AL with the Yankees wasn't much better overall than the current edition of Tyler Flowers. Even fangraphs agrees. Paying a 32 year old catcher based on his 2014 career type season, basically for his services in 2017-2018, probably would wind up like the Wiley Coyote. If the Sox aren't going to contend until 2017 might as well trade Sale and Q. I mean what's the point if it takes that long to go .500? Baseball is a weird sport with the ridiculous economic system and ways of "rebuilding" compared to the parity stricken NFL. I mean we gonna waste 3 more seasons of Sale? Crazy. At least Flowers is OK on defense and gets hot once in a while. I agree to keep him. It's not like there are many catchers who can hit. Some want Martin yet he's as old as Lexi and Lexi must go cause he's too old and will decline. Crazy crazy crazy talk.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) so that's yet one more reason they need to reign it in and hold off spending until next offseason. Geez, this is like being a Cub fan: Wait til next year. How long are the Sox going to waste Sale and now Abreu? Do what it takes to win a s*** division NOW. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) Sorry but the Sox only have 30-35M to spend which will not be enough to sign a big named starter, sign a lefty bat and bring in a proven closer. All three of those will be very costly. If that's all the Sox can spend, Jerry should cut parking in half NOW. Also, trading Alexei is a ridiculous idea. Do some of you WANT to finish last again? Think about how bad the Sox will be at short without Alexei. It will be embarrassingly bad. A whole season of L. Garcia at short? My gosh. Pencil them in for last place for sure with no bat at all there.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 20, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) To Syria? No. My point was they are threatening to kidnap people in Australia and behead them. It's been reported these ISIS motherf***ers are also in the USA, thus could kidnap us here and behead us. It angers me to no end. Please Mr. Obama ... stop ISIS!

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 03:12 AM) Royals win. Mariners lose, on life support. A's down 1-0, 1st AL Central- Tigers 86-70 Royals 85-71 I'd laugh if the AL Wildcard Game is A's-Tigers, and the Tigers lost. I'm sick of the Tigers' domination of the Central. I'd love it if somehow they lost the wildcard game, as well. Something tells me they are built for the playoffs, however and this is finally their year to win it all. Hopefully they'll get it out of their system and the dynasty will be over.

Is Soria on a multi-year deal? Doesn't he still have closer stuff? Can Hahn get him?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 22, 2014 -> 11:17 PM) Aoki, Shields, Butler or V-Mart. The more I've been watching Aoki recently, the more I like him. He has an unorthodox approach, has cut down his K rate dramatically as he dealt with the transition from NL to AL....at the plate, the defense has no idea where to play him as he hits to all fields equally well, he's just a nice/solid glue or complimentary player that does all the little things right, another version of Iguchi. Statistically, he's been on fire the last month or so, so my having watched him a lot in the middle of a hot streak is skewing my viewpoint a bit, but he's just been the most dangerous hitter for the Royals. At any rate, that would be quite a nice off-season, and weaken two division foes. The problem is that I just don't see V-Mart until/unless we're in win now/all in mode, and that's not really setting up for 2015 without also adding another starter, two pieces in the bullpen (at least) and fixing the LF situation. Another solution is simply to sign Aoki and Shields, and DH Viciedo. Of course, if you cut Viciedo's $5ish million, that gives you a lot more flexibility to sign Martinez. (Unfortunately, the Martinez we could really use is JD Martinez, in terms of price range). My following responses are made with the caveat I don't care about Jerry's pocketbook, just the fact if the Sox sign a player to a multi year deal and he is a bust, the fact we can't get rid of him will annoy me to no end. Aoki: No. Please God no. Mr Slappy will be so hated on this board all season. Shields: No, because it'll take a 5-6 year deal and there's a huge risk he could flop at any time. Now if he'd go for 2-3 years, sure. He seems awfully durable and is still pretty good. Butler: If he is willing to admit he's a huge question mark and take a 2-3 year Keppinger type deal, fine. Playing KC 19 times means he'd get 76 at bats against the Royals which could help the batting average and production since he'd want to beat his old team's ass. V-Mart: Not gonna happen but would be a nice signee for 1-3 years. Again, somebody will probably give him a 5-6 year deal and the Adam Dunn deal has made those unpopular on the south side. I was reading Toronto put Buehrle on waivers this season. How bout a trade where they pay 3/4 of his contract and we send them a minor league stiff and bring back Mark? Then we could move one of the other lefties to the bullpen. Or Rodon could start his career in the bullpen for a year.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 01:50 AM) not what anybody wanted in April, but it's a step in the right direction and you can see more pieces of the puzzle being filled in. True, but it's been the "good Sox" and the "horrid Sox" in stretches all year. They've had great, clean games, exciting games. And they've had miserable games. 'Step in the right direction' is probably right, but there are no guarantees the Sox don't go 10-20 next April and are out of it after four weeks. Hahn needs to come through for all White Sox fans this offseason and make this a .500 team.

Sox do the Royals a huge favor. I have one question ... Is Bassitt for real? And why isn't Hawk calling him 'The Hound' like somebody created on this board.
-
Wow just heard Tyler hit his 15th homer. Hell he almost hit as many as Viciedo this year.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 12:11 AM) Joyce is another good bounceback candidate, along with Billy Butler. Plus he fits the LH box to check off. Someone else mentioned LaRoche with the Nationals, if Zimmerman's forced to 1B. Royals fans believe Butler is finished. Should be very interesting to see if anybody gives him multi years. He's a man in a home run hitter's body who does not hit home runs. That said I wouldn't mind seeing him as the Sox DH. It'd be unwise to sign him 4-6 years however. Doing that is Dunn-like. Ouch.

I will be stunned if Petricka closes this out.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 22, 2014 -> 10:57 PM) Would be surprised if he didn't play in finale. Maybe Paulie doesn't want final game of season to take away from his teammates and thus they are doing day before? I thought Robin said he'd play him in all four vs. KC. Maybe it'll all depend on how he does Saturday night and who KC is pitching Sunday. Has Robin commented yet? If Sunday's game doesn't mean anything for KC, Saturday's game probably is the right call.

Adrian Peterson indicted for negligent injury to a child

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 08:48 PM) To the kid getting the s*** beat out of him by a stick, it is a big f***ing deal. Some people actually feel the need to stand up and say that we don't have to allow that as a society. I really felt sad for the child and sickened after seeing those pictures. AP should not play the rest of the season IMO. I don't know about next year. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 08:54 PM) Oh we know. It's a stage. He's 2. It's gonna happen. But trust me, as a new parent, it's incredibly infuriating when you hear non-parents and parents of "well behaved kids" make comments about your parenting as if they would be any better. Just out of curiosity how did you deal with the 2 year old's behavior when he tried to run away and got mean? I'm not judging. I just figure there has to be some sort of response. What did you do and what do you do? It's obvious what Adrian Peterson would do, even at 2, the stuff we've been hearing about AP. -
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 15, 2014 -> 05:17 PM) Brother Rice and SXU stadiums are very close. SXU is on campus. Greg it is just over that hill that was there when you went to Rice. Both schools have too many activities to share although Rice uses SXU for hoops sometimes. Badke's only downfall is he wants to train like a CCL Blue team (MC or Rita) and I am not certain the kids that go to Rice are looking for that. A good number of those guys are still looking to be three sport guys. Badke is doing a nice but it is a tough spot as the CCL Blue is tough. Thanks for the update. I just did a google on Steve Nye and see he was canned at York and is an assistant now at Montini. Seems like a guy with a good attitude from the article I read. It's funny. I was at the Kansas football game against Central Michigan and Martez Walker scored his first college touchdown and looked damn good in a 14-point loss to horrific Kansas. I thought I recognized the name. After the game I went down there and found him by the bus and indeed he's the Brother Rice grad. We had a nice chat and he said he enjoyed his time at Rice. He said he drove in every day from Orland Park, wherever that is. We talked some Rice Xs and Os but I won't violate his trust. Very nice kid and I think he might be a good one at Central Michigan. I hope so.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Sep 21, 2014 -> 02:13 PM) Very limited interest in the MLB Draft. Football and basketball drafts attract attention because the players most likely will make the roster the following year. I am pretty sure I heard where 1 player from the 2012 draft has made it to a ML roster other than the Sept call-ups. I have zero interest in the MLB Draft but I am outnumbered on this board. Don't care. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 20, 2014 -> 09:47 PM) He doesn't really look good defensively anywhere he plays but that might change wih some experience. But, I still see him in a super sub roe which means he better improve with the glove Sox have too many super subs. Need some more studs.

Viciedo just over .230. Could finish in the .220s, not good; Tyler close to falling back into the .230s as well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 08:18 PM) It is pretty obviously mocking the idea that anyone wants to be kidnapped and beheaded, especially since I am guessing your odds are higher of winning the powerball drawing tonight than being kidnapped and beheaded while living in Kansas. I travel a lot, though.

Always good to see Avi Garcia drive in the winning run. Need him to excel to be a decent team in the future.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 11:24 PM) Not without another good starting pitcher, a better defense and more offense from the corners 2b catcher and Dunn. I'll give you the point on defense. It would have reared its ugly head eventually. You do remember when the Sox were a few games over .500 it was looking like the team had enough to contend except a bullpen and defense. QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 20, 2014 -> 12:40 AM) Found it. Greg continues to forget Nate Jones even after claiming he knows. I'm not a big Nate Jones fan. In fact, I can guarantee you he's just another guy. -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) That's great news. Give the man some talent and let's see what he can do. Like the article said, he's going to be Sox manager a long, long time. Time to upgrade the talent. -
Addison Reed trade from DBacks' perspective

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 09:51 PM) As support, I will repost this. #1 This is the type of trade you make a GM when you are rebuilding, and you need position players. #2 Matt Davidson has not performed how the White Sox wanted him to do up to this point. If you want to give up on a 24 year old with plus power at 3B, and just look a the today of the deal, the Diamondbacks have "won" the trade to this point. #3 Just because Davidson has not performed so far, doesn't mean you wouldn't make the same sort of deal again. 3.) See I don't understand this reasoning. I understand the "logic" behind the trade. But if you are going to trade the ONLY closer on the team, make sure u have a fricking closer before doing so. Sox fans giving Hahn a pass on this deal confuse me. YES YES YES I understand the reasoning behind the trade. Relievers/closers are a dime a dozen and Reed wasn't that good anyway and he's just going to get worst. In return, Sox get an everyday third baseman for 10 years! Yes I understand the reasoning. I do not applaud the reasoning. Davidson is a huge flop right now and the Sox had a bullpen so bad it is beyond belief. Don't trade all your closer candidates. You must keep at least one who CAN CLOSE. I wish I had bosses like you guys. You guys give Hahn the benefit of the doubt cause on paper it was a good trade. Like Dick said SO WAS LOU BROCK FOR ERNIE BROGLIO. Hahn on this issue in my mind gets a big, fat grade of D. You know if we had a killer bullpen this season, the Sox might be right there with the Royals.
