Wondering if she's just a fan of the name (which is close enough to a brand of musical instrument) and colors (black and white) -
Sox should hold onto Eloy. The downside of holding on is that you've sunk money (which the Sox have room to spare at this point) into an asset that returns you peanuts. The upside of holding onto him is that you could get actual legitimate prospects in return. To me, the downside is basically equivalent to trading him now. The upside of trading him now is what - you save money? That money isn't going to be spent on anything meaningful probably anyways, unless you can buy prospects (international bonus pool notwithstanding).

He could be the defensive upgrade at 1B we've been waiting for.

Basically agree with both of what you're saying, with one being more optimistic than the other. If you're Getz, you're trying to maximize raw value that you have. The only thing that should give you pause is if you end up with multiple guys slated to be at one position / level, and they have no flexibility in their positions. If you're in a position to compete in 2025 by some grace of God, you have chips to trade. Right now, the Sox have what has to be near the bottom of the barrel in MLB talent (reflected in wins and losses), top-end minor league talent (reflected in prospect rankings), minor league depth, and, as a sum of all of that, trade capital. We have none of that, and Getz's first job is to build up trade capital.

In related news, the Sox have confirmed that they are in negotiations with wfmt to be their new radio affiliate.

You win by scoring more runs than the other guys. If you do that by winning 1-0 or 10-9, it doesn't matter. That said, get bats in return as headliners and develop the pitchers you get as secondary pieces.

I think the point is that we're waiting for other teams to sort out their needs.

To see if we can goad Benetti into calling him "Nicky Two Strikes" from the Tigers' booth?

I wish I could hate this post.

I bet Jerry would have been willing to match 10 years / $2MM per year.

I'd be OK with this plan as well. The big question is... is this the actual plan?
-
Also, depending on the PTBNL, not a bad pickup for cheap. so far I like Getz’s individual moves, but I’m not entirely convinced of the direction (or lack thereof).

The first thing I thought when I saw the posts about his elite framing was “…so when do robot umps take that away?”

They're popular, but this takes them to a different level, IMO.

For a team like the Dodgers, the extra revenue they can make from Japan now will be huge. Already a very popular team there. Having Otani (basically a national treasure right now with his own dedicated news updates daily on all channels) on the team now will just add to it. No idea if it will offset the massive cost of the contract, but it's still worth noting that $700M for the Dodgers is more likely to be offset by Japanese revenue than $700M for the Blue Jays of Cubs, for example.

Cameron Maybin: Yankees facial hair rule deters free agents
JoeC replied to Quin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Not at all. And he just went to a high school (not affiliated with the military directly) that used military style structures as a framework for leadership development in its students. The Yankee culture stuff I see DRIPS with that background. -

I understand why it's there (Steinbrenner's military school background). The other way to look at it is that you know the players either: a) REALLY want to get paid the big bucks and are willing to shave their faces to do it or b) are willing to make this "sacrifice to join the team; therefore, there's a certain level of buy-in that is already established and ingrained into the clubhouse culture. Is it dumb? Maybe. But I can at least see some of the logic behind it. -
If there's nothing of substance to communicate, . . . .
