  1. Yeah, but the Jam Band stuff was the worst stuff they have done. They are by far at their strongest when they are just ROCKING, as Robinson has a great voice for that type of stuff. Plus, there is a big difference between having signs of your influences, and just blatantly using their riffs and hooks. I also was not condeming them, but pointing out that you made a strong point of saying they were a great AMERICAN RnR band, and I was simply pointing out that everything that they are though is steeped in the UK RnR scene of the early 70's. I admit to being a bit biased as Faces and Small Faces are two of my favorite bands, and I find it disheartening that for years the Crowes would be getting all this praise from people, and people would claim them one of the greatest RnR bands ever, and then Faces would be forgotten about. But I would take a day listening to "Money Maker" and "By Your Side" over 98% of the crap flooding the airwaves nowdays. Everything in between those two albums though, and after BYS, I will take a pass on. Too "jammy" and "spacey". I hate trippy stuff. Again, I am not trying to knock them, and both of the Robinson boys will agree (or would have in the early days) with everything I have said. They were proud to be doing what they were doing. They still have NOTHING on The Quireboys though for ripping off Faces, and I love The Quireboys.
  2. I agree "Money Maker" is a good album, but both that and the later "By Your Side" are so Faces it is almost embarrassing. Then "Lions" was blatant Zep stealing.
  3. This needs to be done. You all know it does, as it is the only one of these religion polls that actually matters.
  4. Notice though, it is not standing or walking. They still can't solve that problem. Idiots!
  5. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 08:12 AM) Last, I have to throw in a very personal favorite The Black Crowes. THE most rock n roll, American rock n roll band. Except that they are a blatant rip-off of Faces, which is one of the most pure British RnR bands to ever exist. Go through the entire Faces catalogue, and you will find a BC song for that song. Plus, if they weren't taking from Faces, they were taking from Humble Pie (which came from the same place as Faces, namely Small Faces) and Led Zep. They eventually started using some of the old Delta Blues influences that influenced all of the bands they were "borrowing" from, so they eventually got around to listening to their own countries tunes. But make no mistakes, they are a Faces rip-off, and Robinson will admit it.
  6. Cheap Trick should get a little nod. Maybe not HUGE, but they definitley have their place in history. Agree with Critic about Aerosmith. They were brilliant, and then not so, and now just TERRIBLE. Steven Tyler should not be allowed to speak again until he stops that strange rhyme/rap crap he does in every interview. Plus after seeing Be Cool, please, nobody ever give him an acting part ever again!!! Joe Perry though is still one of the coolest looking cats in all of music.
  7. I don't like them at all, and think Henley is an ego-maniac prick, but ya have to respect the hell out of them.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 01:42 PM) I'm glad someone said the Eagles... I had totally forgot about them. That would have to be my vote for they sales and longevity, to go along with their huge hits. Longevity in how the music has stayed relevant? They took a little hiatus there, that many thought would never end, including the band.
  9. QUOTE(Spiff @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 01:42 PM) Ramones, Lifetime, Green Day (as much as they piss me off nowadays), you can see where my roots are Edit: mine aren't really the most popular or successful bands of all time but ones who influenced culture and music a whole lot. Quintessential American bands that defined their genre. Lifetime??? Who are they? What genre did they define? From your others, I am thinking some form of Punk (though Green Day hardly defined it), but after years in the Punk trenches...I have never heard of them. Are they a newer band?
  10. QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 01:22 PM) Izzy could've stayed and they were still screwed. Axl's ego and drugs/alcohol doomed that band. Steven Adler would be dead right now if he hadn't been kicked out. Appetite For Destruction is one of rock's all-time masterpieces, though. But the only way Izzy would have stayed would have been if Axl hadn't gone wacky. So, thereby, they would have been massive, even more than they were. Remember though, I am an avid GnR hater. I love Izzy solo though, so I am all cool with the outcome.
  11. The Orchestra has a new Christmas album coming out in November! If you get a chance to see them on a Christmas tour, DO IT!!! Great fun. Fun for the whole family, actually. If it was an all ages, I would bring my daughter for sure. But it is a great album. Like I said, it isn't as flashy as he could be, as the whole purpose of this is the expose people to the Rockabilly greats from the past. That is actually the purpose of all of the future Rockabilly Riot releases from him. So he is keeping it as true to the originals as possible (with little fun flares here and there) so that people will know for sure what they really like, and so he can pay real tribute to his influences.
  12. Elvis (he did have a standard backing band in his early days, of which Scotty Moore was the guitarist) Aerosmith KISS Beach Boys If Guns N Roses had stuck it out and Axl had not gone insane, they would have dwarfed everybody BUT The Beatles and Led Zep. Only under the debut album line-up though. The second Izzy left, they were screwed.
  13. I bought the new Brian Setzer album yesterday. It's called Rockabilly Riot: A Tribute To Sun Records Vol. 1. It's gonna be a longstay in my rotation, as it is Brian getting back to straight up Rockabilly. I love the Jazz stuff he has done, and his modernizing of Rockabilly from his past two trio albums, but this is where he really shines. Though he doesn't do as much flash as normal, and he sticks to the songs quit strictly. They are all covers of old Sun Records stuff. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others. Odd though is that Brian uses his Gretsch Duo Jet mostly. Not sure why he chose that over his standard 6120. But on the back cover, there is a lot to be said about the fact that he thanks local restaurants (to the recording studio) and BBQ joints in the credits. Brings the CD and artist back to reading like a first album, or somebody who knows where he came from. I love BBQ, I love Setzer. Setzer loves BBQ. I wonder if he loves me?
  14. QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 08:58 AM) Hate to be the guy to change the lightbulbs on top though. Yeesh...never thought about that. :puke
  15. I'm just amazed she used the word "fathom"!!!
  16. Can somebody who understands this stuff please explain to me why all of these buildings need the HUGE spires and antennaes on top? Are these just ways of cheating to get the TALLEST building without the extra money of electricity and plumbing up that high, or do they serve some actual purpose?
  17. Missed the show. I don't like that guy anyway, so I would have avoided the show. It's kind of funny that his name sounds just like "Silly Ass".
  18. QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 03:44 PM) I really like the Pixies. Saw them once during their heyday, and I enjoyed them a lot. I thought they were really good back then, and I was curious to see their reunion tour. But the Aragon show was a little too pricey for me, and I didn't really care for their opener, Urge Overkill, although Sister Havana is an awesome song. Urge was great for two albums. Supersonic Storybook" and Saturation. I just never got the whole Pixies thing. People raved about them, but I found them to be terribly pretentious and boring. This is coming from a guy who enjoys much Prog Rock...or used to.
  19. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 03:14 PM) Great, now we've all heard your opinion, which by the way, is no more valid than anyone else's....regardless of how big your caps are. :headshake I could have used really big caps, as there is the option. But we all know that really big caps only counts in pinnocle. Isn't the whole board, this SL&P thing about opinions? Or was it the potty language? We are talking about Lollapalloza, and I bet I can find something in Perry Farrels past discography that has that language on it.
  20. QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 07:10 AM) I've heard that since the original reunion tour, the Pixies have been less than inspired. Maybe they're tired of each other again already? Or maybe by getting back together they all remembered just how much they REALLY f***ING SUCK and have been miserably depressed to be playing that godawful crap again.
  21. It looks like a funny and interesting article, but the website uses the word "phat" in it, and I am just not cool enough to be able to associate with that word...so I don't think I really can trust the site to be a serious article. If I can't understand the name of a site...I am not so sure I should be reading it...

  23. QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 10:55 PM) That's honest, and finally someone with a respectable view. Hey!!! I basically said that also the other day! So two of us have respectable views. Sheesh...I guess I am too dang forgettable.
  24. So...this Holiday would be in the sun? This is a song reference...

Cold out: Pajama pants and t-shirt Warm out: Shorts and t-shirt Hotter than hell (even with the AC): shorts When I'm lookin' for some "attention": a sign that spells out exactly why I am going to bed at 8PM. Never do the "nothing" or underwear, as I have kids and would rather NOT scar them for life. Now...since you asked...are you also looking for photo proof? If so, go to: www.kidgleasonisahotSOB.com
