8/6 Gamethread: White Sox (Castillo) @ Red Sox (Suarez) - 8:10 PM ADT
Lol they're about to get swept by one of the worst teams in baseball and they're mocking a guy celebrating his first career MLB strikeout at age 29. What an unlikeable team.

Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)
Thinking some about that Early/Mead trade. Early was the 10th rated prospect in Boston's system last season prior to his debut and has pitched quite well in the MLB so far (regression to be expected). Adams was 12th in our system, is three years older and has a 2 point higher ERA at AAA. Pretty easy to say that Early has more trade value than Adams but are in a similar tier. How much better of a player is Mead than Doyle? Mead has obviously had a very nice season at the plate but went into the season with career negative WAR and doesn't have a true position. He is one of the worst infield defenders in MLB. Doyle has ~5ish WAR, plays GG caliber defense at a much more important position but has been dreadful at the plate this season and the first half of last. Have to think Mead is probably a bit more valuable at this moment in time, but these seem like fairly similar trades to me, former top prospects who have struggled to take hold in MLB traded for controllable, mid-rotation type guys. Difference is Mead and Connelly have done something in MLB this season compared to the other two. Boston also trades from a position of pitching depth relative to our Sox who could use some rotation help, but it's hard to see Mead in Boston's longterm plans except as a Yoshida DH replacement. Doyle doesn't have to do a whole lot to be the Sox starting CF for years to come. If he hits ~.700ish OPS and normalizes his splits vR, you probably have an every day GG center fielder producing 4ish WAR. That isn't a huge ask. Adams would have to turn out to be a better pitcher than Martin to match that production. What are the odds of either of these things happening? I bet they're reasonably close in probability.

White Sox DFA Austin Hays
Fair enough. I do think there's a good chance he turns it around because of the track record you cite, I'm just dubious a contender would be interested in rostering him.

White Sox DFA Austin Hays
It isn't head-scratching, he never plays and isn't good when he does, on either side of the ball. You want to give him at-bats or reps in the outfield over Montgomery or Antonacci? Or have two roster spots taken up by a mediocre platoon DH tandem? At least give Hays the Josh Rojas treatment, people. It was a useless signing, the outfield just isn't the worst in MLB like we all thought it would be. What do you bet he remains in the org because no team wants to pay him his salary + buyout, and he likely has no interest in a release because he'd just be playing minor league ball somewhere else? DFAing this guy makes total sense, it makes less sense to me to do it with Pereira.

White Sox acquiring Joey Bart from ATL
If Romo sucks, somebody tell me why the likes of Austin Hedges and Martin Maldonado are (were) perpetually employed by MLB teams. I don't know if there are 'metrics' to determine how well a catcher calls a game, but Romo has caught several shutouts and there's a reason he hasn't been DFA'd despite a .500 OPS heavily buoyed by a killer first week. Can a 24-year-old with 200 MLB plate appearances not improve his hitting? Guy can be a ~70 ops+ hitter and still be very valuable. Is Quero cooked? His calling card is offense and he hasn't shown it in MLB, doesn't mean he won't. Seems like whatever he did in the offseason was a mistake because his AAA ops is 300 points lower than it was the last two seasons. Seems unwise to give up on guys in their early 20s who have demonstrated talent. Bart is a fine stopgap since he cost nothing but it would've been shortsighted to give up talented players for Stephenson or Liam Hicks.

An ominous future...
"Ken Rosenthal" and "big" in the same sentence is confusing me. Little Ken knows how to keep his 'sources' happy with propagandistic articles like this. I think pretty much every baseball fan knows why teams like the Rays and Guardians are consistently good despite low payrolls, but financial parity simply does produce a more competitive environment. Frankly, this whole idea goes out the window if MLB contracts were structured like they are in every other sport, ie it takes less than a decade for a player to start earning his market value. The small market teams can keep up at the moment because the best players in the game haven't had a chance to reach free agency. That doesn't make it acceptable that 2 or 3 teams are the only options for the top tier free agents. That's been a plague on this sport since the early days when every good player just went to the Yankees.

Romero is about the only one of these so-called 'insiders' who isn't a complete idiot.

Chi Sox @ Bo Sox 6:10 First Pitch
Quero's biggest mistake here seemingly is learning to speak English. Who gives a s%*# what he said.

Derek Hill to Phillies, Pereira reinstated
.400 babip that's surely sustainable. also, dude had like a sub-.600 OPS at Doyle's age without the elite defense. Doyle has produced double as much WAR and the majority of Hill's career WAR has come in the last two months. good for him for having a hot streak, not good for you for being logically inconsistent.

Sox catching, Teel back in September maybe
SoxTalk: this team lost 100some games, no way they could hope to be .500 in 2026! Also SoxTalk: this team is miraculously kind of good somehow and nobody saw it coming, why don't we throw out all the work done over the last 3 years for a .700 OPS catcher we need for about a month!

Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)
What do you bet our man Doyle ends up hitting like Vargas while playing gold glove defense? The naysayers have been proven demonstrably wrong time and time again, I think the probability that it happens one more time is pretty high.

Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
Definite disconnect on what the Angels/this board think Detmers is worth vs what the rest of the league thinks. If Mason Adams/Boston Smith got that deal done, I'd like it. Have to think the Cubs would've offered them Rojas though which would've been a deal worth taking. Or maybe not, the Cubs could win the World Series this year and Holmes is strictly better. re: Stephenson, probably some calculus about keeping a guy that fans like and wants to be there and was probably returning a low tier prospect at best. Joey Bart for free is such a better option for the Sox.

If I'm Philly, I still want him. Even less valuable now than he was when we traded him, still probably better than Crawford.

Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)
Because you guys are whiny and obnoxious and mean-spirited. I wonder if you actually communicate this way in the real world or if you feel emboldened because you're on the computer.

Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)
Why do you speak this way to people?

Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)
You know what's stupid? I've been posting on this board for three years and it's the same group of people who are always wrong, who are also the whiniest and who are also internet bullies. At a certain point, you don't even need to watch baseball to have opinions on it, just say the opposite of whatever the groupthink on this board says and you'll probably be correct.

the whiniest among us will complain about this trade and then ask "why didn't we trade bonemer for freddy peralta"?

I said it's an overpay, now we're ready for 20 pages of waterworks about a 16-year-old dominican or whatever else.

You guys are all so whiny.

Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)
He's got three+ years of arb eligibility and minor league options, but he's also a legit non-tender candidate. Upside is an actual Luis Robert replacement whereas Adams's is probably a third starter. Prefer trading Adams to Oppor or Larson or obviously McDougal I guess. Sandlin I wouldn't have minded to see in the trade.

Thanks, I hate it...

Sox acquire Brenton Doyle - trade Adams and Carlos Vielma (SS)
non-zero chance both guys outperform Peters. as with Romo, I like these buy low ideas better than giving up proper prospects for pretty much any player. some of us want to win the division this year, future be damned, while others want to build a team that contends for a world series every year.
