AAAA players routinely become solid major league relievers. The orgs that identify and develop those guys can then go out and sign #1 starters or impact bats.

This is why you don't spend $6M on marginal platoon OFers. They're relatively easy to find, it's also why you don't pay $10M for a bullpen arm if he's not a legit backend bullpen arm. Go spend $15M on a legit OF or get someone that can actually close and pay top market value, but stop with a persistent strategy of mediocrity. I feel like every addition where they're making more than Arb money is just settling for marginal players with mediocre value. All that bad money adds up when you consistently waste it on replaceable players.

There is no universe where Brenton Doyle is the best return you can get for Mason Adams. Seems like a very poor return on prospect capital. I feel like there was a better option than Brazobán (who I don't mind personally). I also would have preferred to pick up the single best asset that the combined value of all the prospects we traded could have netted than spreading it out on mediocre upgrades. The way I judge the trade deadline is what would have been the cost to get these guys if they were free agents? The answer to that is not a lot, absolutely not the prospect value we have up.

The more I think this through the more convinced I am that this was a total panic move by Getz. We didn't give up much value (not that we should have). But we've now committed money and a rotation spot to a dude who likely would be out of a job if not for the $25M committed annually for the next year and a half. I would have preferred to do nothing than make panic moves like this that commit dollars and thus playing time to subpar players. For the money we're going to pay subpar dudes like this and Benny we could actually go get someone of real value. The Sox just love overpaying for mediocrity.

I would have guessed you could have had Castillo for free if you're taking on all the money. Getz probably didn't need to include a prospect but panicked.

My issue with the Sox and their approach to trades or free agency is they waste money and assets to get marginally better. If you're going to trade just a few chips to pick up like 3 more games and maybe be marginally more competitive in round 1 don't bother. Save the money and chips for the off-season and go all in (or wait to do it the following year or that when you feel the time is right). That's one thing Preller seems to understand, if you're gonna swing, swing for the fences otherwise you're just showing enough effort to justify keeping your job but you don't have a viable strategy for legitimately winning it all and at the end that's all that matters.

That's exactly the point. It makes a mockery of the system that you draft guys you don't intend to actually sign.

Honestly, they really should do away with the pool. All these senior signs getting nothing to manage pool space is kinda of a shitty way to bring these guys into pro baseball. They should have at least a 50% floor on slot value and maybe cap the bonus on day 2 picks so you can't go a million over on pick 11 and force a team to spend their full pool day 1.

This has been a fantastic draft. I may go as far to say the best draft they've ever had. I feel pretty confident the first 3 picks will be big leaguers. That really sets you up to take a lot of risks and go for development potential over floor. They might not have a single big leaguer with picks 4+ but I like they took a bunch of "if" (if x develops they might actually have something).

It doesn't seem to matter who makes the decisions for the Sox, but there's always a clear deficit in strategic planning. I'm not a huge Gonzales fan but the Sox need pitching without trading low on a dude like Noah. This accomplished nothing to improve our MLB pitching and makes the probability of giving up meaningful value to fill a deficit need (legit MLB pitching) while reducing our IF depth. If they had traded him for a legit quality reliever (or packaged him with someone for said RP) I would at least appreciate the need to consolation value for MLB assets. A move like this only makes sense if you don't plan to be a buyer and you think you're selling high on a dude that's not going to produce with a longer term vision of truly competing next year after you've spent some serious cash.

I've only seen a few WS games, but it was obvious they were pitching around Bonemer. He probably swung at every first pitch trying to catch an early count fastball. I'm actually kinda of surprised his walk rate is this high as he seems to swing early and fall behind in each AB.

Unfortunately the White Sox have significantly lowered my standards. League average position players seem like a novel concept.

He's now in the top 10 of most offensive categories in the IL and most of the guys in front of him have super inflated BABIP. It's hard to take anyone's Charlotte numbers seriously but it's also hard to believe he couldn't be a WRC+ 100 big leaguer if he keeps this up for a few months.

But each time you send a dude down he can't come back up for something like 15 days and there's now a limit how many times you can option a guy. Just seems unnecessary to call up a dude for one night.

Not sure you're getting more then 3IP out of Schweitzer his first time out so if the goal was to save the bullpen in the next few starts pretty sure you just did the opposite. I'm hoping the MLB pitching staff is like a revolving door with Charlotte. Keep shuffling everyone with options until they make an undisputable case for a MLB job. Fedde should be cut within a month and if Kay isn't giving you quality innings then it's time to try him out of the pen.
