The Bars Thread
QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Aug 14, 2010 -> 07:47 PM) Are there any good areas you guys recommend in Chicago with a few good bars within walking distance of each other? Depends on what you're looking for. If you are wanting a college-type feel, then Lincoln Park/Wrigleyville are littered with those types all within a couple blocks in each neighborhood. Those are ones I am familiar with (I don't particularly like the area, but that's where my friends go). Also, I have heard good thing about the Wicker Park area on Milwaukee if you are more the artsy type. Really depends what you are looking for.

Films Thread
The Other Guys was a riot. Sure the humor was mostly silly, but hilarious movie. Anyone else seen it? Probably in the other pages of this thread, but I am too lazy to go back and look ha.

Runners Thread
QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ Aug 14, 2010 -> 04:48 PM) Had my longest personal run to wrap-up week 10 of training yesterday--17 miles. I was incredibly nervous before/during the run--causing me to go at a much more moderate pace than I typically do, but it went off very well. I'm excited about the 18 miler scheduled next week--I'm looking to go a little harder and finish it in comparable time to what I did the 17 miler in. What time did you run today? This weather makes training brutal.

8/12 White Sox vs Twins
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 09:15 PM) I wish a different former Sox pitcher, Gary Glover, was pitching here. I wish it was Jose Paniagua. He blows up at the Cell.

8/12 White Sox vs Twins
It would figure that with us playing the twins, we would choke in every big spot imaginable. Please Alexei changed that.

8/12 White Sox vs Twins
Our 3-4-5 go 1-2-3 in one of the biggest sequences of at-bats all year.

8/12 White Sox vs Twins
If you go to the game, be on the look out for roaming Big Ten Icon mascots. You'll know when you see them.

8/11 Games
It seems the draft picks thus far are performing real well (well, only basing off our first three picks: Sale, Reed and Petricka). Seems like a great top of the draft thus far and thats the most important group.

The Official Run Into Outs Thread
The probabilities show bunting is an awful decision unless you have a pitcher at-bat or a terrible match-up with a hitter. Granted, when you have a runner on second base, no outs and the likes of Andruw Jones pulling the ball, I'd still rather attempt the bunt.

Dreaming of working for the white sox
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 11:01 PM) McCracken's probably one of the most influential sabermetricians of this past decade, too. Even in this case, it's all about getting noticed and knowing the right people. McCracken and his theories became big because he got noticed by Rob Neyer. After he got famous, he did land a job with the Red Sox. It seems like he's no longer doing much baseball research, he's trying to quantify soccer instead (hard to do). If you wanna get into baseball via the stat route, go to Harvard/Stanford/MIT/etc. and major in computer science, math or economics. Then get your masters degree from one of those schools, too. Even though it may seem like a small field, baseball statisticians are plentiful. Again, you gotta have the big-time degree on your hands unless your the exception to the rule like Bill James, and even for him it took what 30 years before a team hired him despite all sorts of groundbreaking stuff.

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
Well Castro at least brought his bat. One more, come on.

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
Hawk b****ing about the zone. Based on what I have seen, I have no issues with the strike zone.

QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:44 PM) I never understood why you would want to give the other team a free base runner.. if they did hit Pierre on purpose, he stole second and is now in scoring position with 1 out in a 1 run game.. thanks Buck ^^

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:41 PM) Dammit... The Sox really need to start throwing at people. It doesn't matter if he was trying to hot Pierre or not. Opposing pitchers would start being more careful if their teammates started getting drilled. It's tough though when you're in a race. You can't risk getting people suspended on putting on base runners in close games. I am definitely with you that something needs to be done (as the Sox always seem to get hit more than they hit others), but you have to pick your spots.

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:35 PM) didn't Kotsay pretty much win us a baseball game a few days ago? wtf am I reading. yeah, but the stats would suggest he has been instrumental in losing games this year too, more than winning. No doubt he was huge in that game, but the statistic is based on the entire season in which it's clear Kotsay has been more harm than good.

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:32 PM) It just gets really old. There is no going back in time and changing the decision, so you might as well either: Today the DH is Konerko, so where is the beef about the "rotating DH". I just have never seen a group of people who are so damn pessimistic. I generally dont even read these threads because I just cant stand the negativity. If you dont believe the Sox can win this game and take the division, then what is the point of being a fan? I cant see how Id enjoy complaining about my favorite team every day. They have problems, they arent perfect, but their my damn team and Im going to hope they win even if they had 9 Omar's out there. You can be a realist and a fan. I think the Sox have a great shot to win the division, but if we play like this against Minnesota, they are gonna take at least 4/6. I don't think anyone is saying the Sox have no shot, but playing s*** baseball to s*** team doesn't help our chances.
-
Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
As well our DH combo has a combined WAR of 0.1 (Kotsay = -0.7, Jones = 0.8), Thome at 1.6. With the division so close that decision to let Thome go in favor of the Jones/Kotsay will loom large.

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:27 PM) Do you guys ever get tired of being negative? Basically unbearable to read these threads every day. Its 1 damn run in the 4th inning. You think Twins fans were jumping off a ledge down 4 to the Tribe and potentially losing 2 out of the last 3 from them? We are just negative toward the fact the Sox decision to play rotating DH with two guys three years past their prime could very well cost us the division.

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
Look at that Kotsay Hustle!!

Sox @ Orioles - Buehrle vs. Guthrie
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) That DH with the OPS over .930 of theirs started the rally. Yeah, but Mark Kotsay had a .829 OPS in 2004 and Andruw Jones had a .922 OPS in 2005.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
Looks like the Sox will face Glen Perkins on Wednesday instead of Slowey. Not a bad trade off even though we hit Slowey hard. But Slowey or Perkins who has a 6.00+ ERA in TRIPLE A.
