  1. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 03:06 PM) Um no, that's atrocious journalism. You can't just casually throw that allegation into like the 7th paragraph of an article with absolutely ZERO proof or credible sources. These rumors, whispers, unnamed sources are dumb. Back it up with proof and facts. Name your sources and these alleged 3 schools that gave you this rock-solid information. I think it's just shoddy journalism, and scrambling to defend himself when called out. Leave the rumors to the bloggers unless you're going to go all the way as a journalist and uncover the facts. Don't just throw that out there to stir something up and get your own name out there. If it's true, I WANT to know about it. But I wanna know all the facts too. And I want it for ALL the recruits. Kinda weird that it's this recruit and now that this is coming up. The rumors have been RAMPANT for tons of recruits throughout the year, so many for kentucky recruits alone, and in multiple sports. They should ALL be investigated, but thoroughly and properly. Also, it would be sweet if this whole debacle sways him towards staying home and coming to DePaul. From what I gather, Purnell is a pretty clean coach. This is turning Davis' meteoric rise from an amazing story, anonymity in a small city school in Chicago, a hoops mecca, into a top 5 player in the nation, into something ridiculous. It's only atrocious if it's false. I do agree though that the true story was that, so the most important part of the story should not be buried in the seventh paragraphs. As well, the sources from the schools like gave him the information on the condition of anonymity. And it will be interesting if he is taken to court over this because he has Shield Law protection in Illinois to not have to give up his sources.
  2. I give credit to Jobu. (Major League reference).
  3. Well for a more serious answer, it depends on the role you would like to play. Marketing (like Brooks): Undergrad in marketing (helps but not necessary), MBA and then be willing to start low and work up Communications (like Reifert): Undergrad in English, Journalism or communications + working for school in sports + getting very lucky to get one of few media relations positions + be willing to make very little for some time Baseball Ops (Hahn/KW): Be a former college/minor league player or go to undergrad (doesn't matter where of what b/c you have to go to grad school) + MBA (top ten school) and/or law degree (top ten school) + pay your dues + get lucky. Community Relations: Be an attractive woman (sorry, it's the truth here) Of course there are other places in the front office but I don't know much about them.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 01:29 PM) I need to hire an intern now. DARREN!!!! (Seinfeld rerefence...)
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 01:28 PM) I'm going to give the Gold Glove award one last shot. If Lexi doesn't get it, the award is dead to me forever. I think his high error count as compared to other guys in the AL like Jeter/Izturis will hurt him in the end. He clearly deserves it, as he has been simply amazing out there, but voting for this award is horrible.

  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 01:27 PM) Lots of new members! You'll be getting your Impeach Kotsay poster and bumper sticker in the mail. Sqwert, I am in, too.
  8. It'd be real nice for Mark to get a complete game. Bullpen would have a nice break and then you can afford to have a short leash with Torres.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 11:06 AM) Hah...knew someone was going to magically come down with some ailment...was just hoping it would be Kots... Definitely sounds fishy. I don't understand the rush to promote Sale when Threets has done everything asked him. The only thing I can think of is that Threets, despite being a lefty, doesn't get lefties out at a great rate (this year at least and granted the sample size is small). They are batting .364 against him with a .825 OPS, righties on the other hand .190/.372. I know Sale might have something in his contract, but why not just wait til September since I don't think his contract would stipulate him being called up in August?
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 01:10 PM) Front loaded deals don't matter in the NHL. The average his is spread out through the life on the contract. This is why the Hossa contract was controversial. Yeah, forgot about that. Cap hit and salary are different in the NHL.
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 11:29 AM) This salary cap s*** sucked, but the fact of the matter is the Hawks still return 8 of their 9 top regular season points leaders and their top four defensemen. Their lack of depth may cost them a few games, especially early, but its still a damn good hockey team thats not gonna give up the Cup without a good fight. Yeah, but we have some good young players that should step up and provide solid minutes. We were return basically 80% of ice time to the team, which is huge, and add a goalie whose abilities are roughly the same as Niemi's. I think we will be fine, but we won't be able to survive injuries all that well. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 11:36 AM) Also, San Jose is a possible destination for Niemi. I said that was a slick move when they extended the rarely used offer sheet to Hammer. It pissed me off, but was smart by them. No doubt that caught the Hawks off guard: “[Offer sheets] don’t concern me. These guys are going to remain with the Blackhawks. We have plenty of flexibility to make things work.” — Hawks general manager Stan Bowman, June 30, 2010. Because of that 'lack of concern' they spent more on Hammer than they were planning on. If that money was available, it would have went to Niemi. I hate to give San Jose and Doug Wilson so much credit, but is it possible the Hammer offer sheet was a calculated move from the start? Oh yeah, in the NHL, signing guys to offer sheets is pretty rare, so the Sharks were clearly trying to hurt the Hawks. They knew the Hawks were going to keep Hammer, so they figured, they offer a front-loaded deal, they can kill the Hawks ability to sign Niemi. Can't say I blame them as the Sharks had no shot at a Cup with the Hawks depth and talent.

QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 07:07 PM) Anyone else running the RNR Half this Sunday? Ill be there!!
  13. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 02:59 PM) Won't happen. KW didn't let them record it apparently. That's not surprising. KW is probably super pissed. Rizzo, you've been warned, you're on KW's Enemy List. Not a good place to be.
  14. Nothing gonna happen, I would love for the MLB The Club Show to show the uncensored KW talks about Mike Rizzo.
  15. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 09:04 AM) I've just added a GM to my most hated list and that's Mike Rizzo. Yeah but not many GMs are like KW where they don't ask for King's Ransom if they don't get it hold out til the last minute. I am sure that's what is happening here. They want Jackson + top prospect (my guess Viciedo) and we want to give Jackson + mid-level prospect. I think a deal will happen, but it will likely just take til the last minute.
  16. He should be DHing every night unless it's a really really tough righty (give Kotsay a start or two per week). Andruw Jones is just horrible at the plate.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 06:31 PM) Yes, Ozzie. Runner-up for manager you'd least like to play for. Personally, I think it's bulls*** as he treats his players very well. However, the reputation he has is obviously hurting. I think this is an American-only perception. I believe most Hispanic players love Ozzie and would play for him in a heartbeat.
  18. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 04:56 PM) His hands are not tied with Dunns contract, loves the guy and doesn't need to trade him and can hold out for a good package. Great clubhouse guy, fans love him. 3-4 teams have serious interest in him. Per Rizzo on MLb trade deadline special. Haha. Just trying not to lose leverage here. Of course Dunn is gone after the year. But credit Rizzo, he is saying the right things to keep the upper hand. KW probably has a deal if he wants to include Viciedo, which I am sure he is reluctant to do.
  19. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) Mentioned they are looking for power on the corners, SP, and to solidfy their defense. Not necessarily in a Dunn deal. It's unfortunate that they have zero interest in Morel with Zimmerman.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 03:41 PM) Free Castro! Yeah, you would think with the lefty pitching and how well he has hit that he would get another start. Guess not. But Anderson actually defies all common logic with left-handed hitters. Career against lefties: .313 AVG, .349 OBP, .440 SLG and a .788 OPS. Righties: .247 AVG, .299 OBP, .384 SLG and a .683 OPS.
  21. Twins got better. Tigers got better. Yanks going to get better. We got the same. A guy with a 5+ ERA in the NL West isn't going to light the world on fire in the AL. Yeah he is more experienced than Hudson, but he is better by Hudson marginally, if at all. I will seriously puke if all we get out of this deadline is Edwin Jackson who costs 10x what Hudson costs.
  22. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 11:07 AM) They had to give 50% of their playoff gate receipts to a league revenue-sharing plan they were not allowed to benefit from when times were bad? What a f***ing scam. League revenue sharing is a good idea, but not at 50%, that's ridiculous.
  23. I seriously hope we don't trade Hudson for this chump. What is their to like about Edwin Jackson? He has had one solid year in his entire ML career and currently sports a 1.50 WHIP/5.14 ERA in the NL. Dude blows, we can do better. And I'd rather just keep Hudson and the other prospect.
  24. Haven't read a single post yet here, but UGH. Jackson isn't that good.
  25. Call me skeptical. Every organization has a Carlos Torres, I seriously can't imagine he is being traded for anything of consequence. Maybe as a throw-in, but he would not be a centerpiece in any deal big or small.
