Official 2009-2010 NCAA Football Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) Game of the decade. Easily. In terms of pure game play, maybe. But I would argue USC-Texas for the NC and Boise State Oklahoma were better, purely for the significance of the games.

Wise catch the #3 ESPN highlight of the year
Have they shown the top 10 plays of the decade in baseball yet on ESPN? They have done the NFL and NBA, but not MLB yet? Curious to see if Wise/Iguchi/Alexei get on there, def. Wise though.

Official 2009-2010 NHL Thread
QUOTE (Drew @ Dec 29, 2009 -> 11:07 AM) The only thing that gives me pause about this team is the goaltending situation. Niemi is good but is also very lucky. Luck has a way of running out fast in the playoffs against hot teams with solid offenses. And Huet, well—he just sucks. You can't look at numbers and say he's having a good year because it's not that easy. Numbers only tell part of the story. What I mean by that is the book on Cristobal Huet has been published in every language spoken in the NHL and is on newsstands and bestseller list now—he goes down, gives up the top shelf and his glove isn't good enough to make up the difference. He's been in the league a long time and would have figured it out by now if he was going to. He is a very expensive career backup playing in a no. 1 spot. Think about this—if he doesn't have Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook in front of him for 30 minutes a game, he faces twice as many shots and the Hawks are in fourth place instead of atop the West. I want Niemi starting until we can find a legitimate no. 1, or maybe he gets that spot after the end of this season. Huet I want gone but he is on a foolishly expensive and long contract. You make a good point that is GAA isn't the greatest measure because Huet doesn't face nearly the shots that others face and his save percentage is as good as the top guys in the league, but to say he sucks? Come on, after his rough start to the season, he has a 1.97 and 1.74 GAA in November and December, respectively with a .922 and .924 save percentage. Are his numbers indicative of how good he is? No. But is he a top-15 goalie in the NHL right now? I'd say yes. Add the dynamic offense and a stalwart defense, he doesn't have to be the best goalie in the league.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Dec 29, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) Campbell and Sopel are quitely earning their money as well. It is a testament to the Hawks that the Swedish Hammer and Versteeg were out this weekend and they did not miss them. This team is also missing two centers (Burish and Bolland) that nobody is talking about. I understand the Red Wings are missing more but the Hawks will only get better when these guys get back and as Hossa gets more comfortable. I wouldn't go so far to say Soup is earning his money, but he is making the signing not as bad as it could have been. He's got a great plus-minus and is getting his points, but he is being paid like a top-5 defenseman and he clearly isn't that. But I understand your point, he is playing a hell of a lot better. Bolland is a huge loss IMO, terrific two-way center who was only getting better.

Minor League Catch-All thread 2009 edition
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 29, 2009 -> 10:07 AM) I'm not shocked. He said in not so many words that he was happier in their organization when he was drafted by them in the rule 5 draft than he was with the White Sox. He basically said he was fighting an uphill battle with this organization to get a shot as he isn't a power pitcher. Good luck, Nando. Minor leaguer relievers usually don't make it in the majors. Good numbers with the Sox, but he wasn't anything special.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 28, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) JVG He's my number one choice, too. I think he is perfect for the job. The one thing I would like to know is do players like playing for him, i.e. can he attract the big-time FAs this summer? I think he is itching to get out of the booth personally even though he is phenomenal at it, but he's a coach at heart like his dad and brother.

John Danks is a good fourth starter? Yeah think. He is probably the best fourth starter in baseball.

2009 Cubs thread
QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Dec 18, 2009 -> 12:32 PM) Might as well release Bradley at that point if you are the Cubs Yeah, if they don't get money back. They basically, lose $3 million and get a completely useless pitcher.

Freddy Garcia vs. Daniel Hudson vs. other options
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 18, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Gimme Freddy till he shows he can't do it. Agreed. I am going to give Freddy the first chance, but I hope we don't reward him for being an Ozzie guy/WS hero. If he struggles, let Hudson get in there. But I am perfectly fine with two options we have right now. FG had a 4.34 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP last year. As a fifth starter that is fine as long as he gets you into the 6th. Hopefully, another season removed from his arm issues will make him even stronger. But if we get those numbers out of Freddy again, we are going to win a lot of games against other team's fifth starters. I just hope this off-season he stayed away from the grass.

2009 Cubs thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 18, 2009 -> 11:04 AM) Yep, Silva actually has more money left on his deal than Bradley does. From Rotoworld: "According to the Seattle Times' Larry Stone, the Cubs have agreed to trade Milton Bradley to the Mariners for right-hander Carlos Silva. It'll be interesting to see what kind of money is being exchanged. Silva, who is owed $24 million over the next two years, posted an 8.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 30 innings this past season and a 6.46 ERA in 153 1/3 innings the year before. Bradley, owed $21 million, batted a disappointing .257/.378/.397 this season with Chicago but is only one year removed from a career-best .321/.436/.563 batting line. For now, it appears the Mariners and GM Jack Zduriencik have pulled off another excellent deal." Cubs are morons. They basically get a guy that has no value and trade someone who is at least decent. They really should have held out. I can't imagine this was the best deal out there in the end. If it was that is sad. Cubs got used and abused, but really it's their own undoing for signing the moron to that horrible deal.

Projected Sox Batting Order
With Rios' .229 OBP with the Sox (.296 overall), I want him nowhere near the top of the order, especially with Pierre who doesn't walk much there, too. That's just two not-so-good OBP players at the top of the order. I like Beckham at 2 and Quentin at 3. And Rios far down the order.

sox close to another deal?
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 05:25 PM) Lets see: Pierre L Beckham R Quentin R Konerko R Pierzynski L Ramirez R Rios R Teahen L Only 3 left handed bats. . . KW loves that Left handed bat in the middle of the order. I'm going to go on a limb and say he's not finished yet. Thome is going to comeback for a cheap one-year deal. We get a lefty, he stays close to his family (they live year-round in Chicago) and everyone is happy. He is only good for 400 at-bats anyway, but if he DHs against righties and Jones against lefties, you got yourself a very good platoon there.

White Sox acquire Juan Pierre
If the two pitching prospects they gave up are bad, I like this move. He was a better bet to produce that Pods and brings better defense in LF. (Q switches to RF, I am guessing). And with the Dodgers picking up salary, he costs less than Podsednik. I like it. Sox will not be giving up Hudson, so forget about that. Likely two younger, upside-type pitchers. Maybe Nevin Griffin and another one. No one that important, guarantee that. Makes you curious what kind of money Pods was asking for if they make this trade.

Sox sign Putz
QUOTE (The Critic @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 12:42 PM) If this means Carrasco's out, I don't like it. If DJ's still around, this signing is fine. How much can D.J. really make in arbitration? I can't imagine it's in excess of $2 million, but he has got to be on the team. Saves a lot of games with his ability to pitch many innings.
-
Sox sign Putz
Big fan of this move, but hopefully it doesn't force out D.J. because then I don't like it so much. If he returns to full health, I like the make-up of the pen. 9th-Jenks 8th-Thornton 7th-Putz 6th-Pena/Williams/Linebrink Long relief-DJ With our starting pitching, we really needed another shut down guy in the 7th and 8th since that's where most of the starters will leave the game.

Jordan Danks filling in at OF
He won't be hitting better than .250 in the majors with his K numbers in the minors. He really needs more time in AA or AAA. At least a half season, if not the entire season. He is a great looking prospect, but he still has major holes in his game that need fine-tuning. Frankly, I would rather have Jones play than Danks, although that is not ideal, either.
