2009 Cubs thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) Cubs are lighting up one of the best pitchers in the NL. Going to have to hope Javy pitches well against them tomorrow. How Randy Wells performs so well is beyond me.

Tyler Flowers article...
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:12 PM) Yeah, he sure went a long way to get to his point too and after taking several paragraphs to set it up he used one example to explain his bush league point. Very odd story. "So what do they have to do with Tyler Flowers? Nothing ... and everything." That line in the article made me laugh hysterically. Seriously, that story was bad.

Charlis Burdie
QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) What was he in high school/college? Starter or reliever? He was signed as UDFA from the Dominican. His first pro season in America he was a starter at Bristol in 2007. Was solid, but nothing great. Then moved to a reliever in 2008 and really took off.

Okay, so he's 22 in Low-A ball, which isn't exactly young, but not too old, either. But I was looking at his numbers and wow! 43 innings, 17 hits, 1.67 ERA, 16 BBs and 48 Ks. Even in low-A ball, if you are missing that many bats and racking up that many strikeouts, your stuff must be legit. So anyone know what kind of stuff he has? Could be a future set-up man/closer. Just looked at his splits, too, righties are hitting .080 against him. That is pretty ridiculous.

Jared Mitchell Signs
The Sox took awhile with Beckham, too. My guess Mitchell signs a week before the Aug. 15 deadline. He will probably start in Kanny just like Gordon did. They probably want to give the kid a break after non-stop sporting activity this year (from football to baseball, how many days off has he actually had?)

7/4 Games
QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 10:03 AM) they may be similiar style players, but Danks has hit for a higher average, gotten on base at a higher clip, has slugged more, is more likely to stay at CF long term, is a significantly better % base stealer granted sweeney was younger he was at AA, danks's minor league numbers so far are significantly better than any one year Ryan Sweeney had in the minors....the only one big advantage that sweeney has is contact rate Sweeney was really never considered to be a CF. He was a good RF because of a gun, but he never moved well enough to be a CF. Danks on the other hand can be a GG CF which automatically makes the need for offense less important. But he has that tool anyway. Danks pretty much owns Sweeney in all aspects except an arm.

Silverio is Raking
It's pretty common for a young player to make a ton of errors at such a young age. I am not worried about that, he will learn the position and become much better better. But, yeah, it's about time to get him back to Bristol and see if he can hit in American ball/

2009 Cubs thread
Cubs win on a horrible call by the ump. 3-2 to Fox with bases loaded, the Brewers pitcher lays right down the heart of the plate, belt high and it's called a ball. EDIT: maybe it wasn't right down the middle or belt high, but that still looked like a strike.

The best Cuban pitching prospect, Aroldis Chapman, defected
I'd love him for the Viciedo price range as people have mentioned, but anything more is too much of a risk on an unknown like this. Sure, he has had solid numbers in Cuban ball, but it's a huge jump to the majors. The way he throws, he also seems like a big risk of injury. Too many potential risks to give him anything more than $10 million over four years or so. Let the Red Sox and Yankees outbid themselves and then have him not make in the majors. Ask the Red Sox how Mr. Untouchable in Japan (Matsuzaka) is doing for them. One average year, one great year and one horrible, injury-riddled year. I think it's clear that the $20 million per year they are paying him (combining his salary and posting fee) is clearly an overpay.

People are also discounting a major contribution from Hinrich, IMO. After the last two injury-riddled years, Kirk had some big moments in the playoffs. Given starter minutes, there is no doubt in my mind that Kirk can be a 15/5/4 player with great D. That's only 6 PPG less than Gordon. Sure Gordon was a great scorer, but he was barely a 20 PPG guy, couldn't handle the ball and played awful D. You can easily make up Gordon's points elsewhere namely in Rose, Thomas and Noah improvements.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 08:28 PM) Totally agree. See above post. I really think they need to add a top goalie prospect. I am not sold on Niemi or Crawford, so I wouldn't mind seeing Steegs or Buff, rather Steegs however, traded for a net prospect.

I do think however Steeger could be moved and you see Fraser back into the lineup, Kopecky moving up to the 3rd line. I think Skille is gonna challenge for a spot, maybe even Beach. Quality depth is a great problem to have.

Top Int'l. Prospects
QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 08:01 PM) Tomorrow is July 2, which means teams are free to sign 16-year-old international prospects to contracts. Here's a list of the top 25 ranked by expected signing bonuses. Not sure which, if any, the Sox may have interest in. 1. Miguel Sano, SS, Dominican Republic 2. Wagner Mateo, CF, Dominican Republic 3. Gary Sanchez, C, Dominican Republic 4. Guillermo Pimentel, CF, Dominican Republic 5. Jose Vincio, SS, Dominican Republic 6. Luis Sardinas, SS, Venezuela 7. Cheslor Cuthbert, 3B, Nicaragua 8. Juan Urbina, LHP, Venezuela 9. Daniel Sanchez, RHP, Venezuela 10. Jose Pena, RHP, Dominican Republic 11. Edgar Ferreira, LHP, Dominican Republic 12. Jochi Ogando, RHP, Dominican Republic 13. Jacob Beltre, C, Dominican Republic 14. Victor Payano, LHP, Dominican Republic 15. Jurickson Profar, RHP/SS, Curacao 16. Luis Jolly, CF, Dominican Republic 17. Johendi Jiminian, RHP, Dominican Republic 18. Santo Aybar, SS, Dominican Republic 19. Leonardo Perdomo, RHP, Dominican Republic 20. Rosel Herrera, SS, Dominican Republic 21. Wilfredo Solano, SS, Venezuela 22. Santiago Nesi, C, Venezuela 23. Jorge Polanco, SS, Dominican Republic 24. Jairo Kelly, SS, Dominican Republic 25. Humberto Valor, SS, Venezuela None. They probably won't make a splash with these guys. Dayan was the big signing.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) BTW, the press conference is up on CBH.com, and I pulled the Huet stuff. Dale, there has been so much talk about your goaltending, are you ready to say Christobal is your guy and ready to move forward? Dale:Well, we have great young assets in Antii and Crawford and Fallon, and Richards so you know we want to build from within, Cristobal had a good year for us, and I expect bigger and better things from him moving forward, as I said, we are going to look at every possible situation to make are team better, and we have a lot of confidence in our young goaltenders, we have a lot of depth in that position, and they have paid the price in the minors the last few seasons, and we have a lot of confidence in their abilities. The next question was about Nik, and he said they were on the phone with him today trying to work something out, and just couldn't get it done, so obviously they were looking at other options..... He's definitely on the block. I am not sure that is smart though. Niemi and Crawford didn't really post great numbers in the minors, although high GAA is not always a goalies fault (bad defense is just as responsible IMO). This team is much better with Huet in goal instead of one of the youngsters.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) Pistons also sign Villanueva. 5 years, $40 million. He is very Rasheed like, so that makes sense for them. But they are still a discombobulated team.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 07:19 PM) Problem with your thinking is...Ben Gordon is the perfect player to have on your team at the same time as you have Bosh or (God I hope not, esp. now) Amare. He's the ultimate inside/outside game guy, because teams have to be insane to leave him to double the big guy. Hell, that's why we've wanted a big guy the last 5 years; because Gordon is such a perfect guy to go inside/outside. I realize this, but my point I guess is more that without BG you are guaranteed to be in the sweepstakes for one of the bigs, but with Gordon on the roster, you are banking on getting rid of Kirk's contract to be a player and that is no guarantee. I mean in the perfect world, I would love to have Rose, BG, Deng, Bosh, Noah as a starting lineup, but I think BG resigning complicates getting the big.
-
Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread
Ultimately, BG signing in Detroit allows us to definitely be a player in the 2010 FA market. I would much rather have a Bosh/Amare type than Ben Gordon. BG is player that can get you to the playoffs, but he can't help you win a championship IMO because he is a huge defensive liability. So we swap away 7 PPG with Hinrich instead of Gordon, you factor in Kirk's D that difference in scoring could be negligible because Kirk won't let the opponent score as much as Ben. I love Ben Gordon, but this team is better set up for a championship without him and that's the ultimate goal.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 29, 2009 -> 08:39 PM) What do you suggest the lineup be? I'm almost tempted to say you bat CQ 7th. Def. to start with. Bat him behind AJ and before Getz. You get a nice L/R/L/R (Beck last). As he starts to hit, you move him up.
