Now, I am hearing that he won't be back until after the all-star break. Sad that a young guy with so much potential has back problems already at 21 years old.

I guess tomorrow we'll find out if we signed any of those guys to minor league deals even though the ones we want will b major league deals.

Who will win the battle for the 5th spot?
maggsmaggs replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
And our #5 starters had a 5.50 or even higher era last year. 10 wins from our #5 starters (which is still below average) we would have been in the playoffs, and possibly to the series. We could have taken the Yankees and the Red Sox, probably not with the A's staff. The key is the production from your backend starters because in our division the 1-3 spots match up pretty well -
Sox budget should be $70 million, not $58 million. Reinsdorf could easily afford ot to pay $3.5 million more his season and still have a $65 million close to what we were at last year. Explain to me how attendence raises from 2002 to 2003, but the resulting payroll for 2003 lowers to 2004. Doesn't make sense, except that Reinsdorf is trying to pocket the extra earnings. CHEAP ASS!!! Bullpen is the key to success, in 2000, granted we had a good offense, but a below average starting nothing like this year (yep). It was a strong bullpen that shut the door in 2000 and led us to the playoffs, I would rather have depth in the pen than anything else, than depth on the bench.

I would love to see the Sox raise payroll $3.5 million and sign Urbina, I think altough the Sox have an average line-up and starting staff, this signing would give them a great pen. This would prevent him from going to the Twins and we would have a top major league bullpen. (A superb one is Koch gets straight) CL-Koch SU-Urbina SU-Marte LS-Wunsch RS-Politte LR-Santiago LR-Wright This would be a great pen.

We selected Jason Grilli in the Major League phase of the Rule V Draft. We also got Fransisco Campos in the AAA phase, Eric Stephenson in AA phase (although he is working to be a fire fighter now not a baseball player.) I can't remember who we got in the A phase, someone likely not to pan out.
-
Who will it be and why?
-
Grilli might be like a Kerry Wood in his way to the majors. He got there performed well and then got injured. By his numbers, it looks like he has gotten his stuff back. I wouldn't mind him in our 5th spot, giving Diaz and Cotts some time in AAA and Person some long relierf with Danny Wright. Buerhle Loiaza Garland Shoenweis Grilli Koch Marte Politte Wunsch Person Wright ??? Stewart/Cotts/Jackson/Santigo/Darensbourg
-
Just a curious question **I couldn't care less** My bad

Although, I think Diaz has a great shot at the spot, IMO he is third right now in the line. This is assuming the rotation is: Buerhle Loiaza Garland Shoenweis ??? Before Diaz I would say Robert Person and Jon Rauch are one-two respectively just from experience. Person as a major league Vet and Rauch time in AAA and a little in the majors. I also think Campos is a wild-card, like last year the 5th spot will be interesting to watch in spring training.

Not that it matters, but Magglio isn't hitting...

I heard Frank works out at the Golds Gym in Las Vegas, just about everyday. Trust me, he is as eager to be in shape and play well as we want and need him. -
Before the 2000, season all Sox fans were saying that we're too young offensively and we have a battered pitching staff and bullpen. This is the same thing we could have this year, with the Sox not the favorites, they may not be pressed in the begining of the year. Hopefully, that will lead to more victories at the start.

Vic is lighting up the Dominican League with a 1.93 era in a little over 4 innings. Darensbourg, Vic 0- 0 1.93 5 0 0 0 0 4.2 2 1 1 0 1 0 4 0 .000

he is only batting .111 in only 3 games, however, but just something to look at. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/Stats...s_VWL_ori.shtml

Have to pitchers that have BAA under .200 against both righties and lefties. Thank you Kelly Wunsch and Damaso Marte. Among the other eight pitchers in the league that did it: Gagne, Farnsworth, Soriano, F. Rodriguez, Dotel and J. Valverde. This has been run into the ground, but ...
maggsmaggs replied to Goldmember's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This trade is good: If this trade happened we should sign Modesi to a 1-year deal to give Reed a year in AAA. Mondesi would play right and then move Encarnacion to Center. Our offense wouldn't be great or good, probably average. But that bullpen and rotation is tops in our division and one of the best in the league. We also get Greg Miller (19 years old), a top 5 prospect in all of baseball and Jackson who is awesome and 22 years old. Also, this would give us salary cap room to add hitters at the deadline like Everett and Alomar last year. -
Tim K. (can't spell his name) said that both the Red Sox and Rangers would like to get the deal done because of the battered relations with their respective teams. Don't you guys feel bad for players making $15 million per year. Just another thought that it still be not be over.
-
I would like to see, Person just because he is a proven veteran. This is only if he is healthy. If he isn't healhty I wouldliketo see Cotts get another chance.

New Jersey's part owner is Steinbrenner, no way will he give in to a Trump. Also, it says on http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_1626.shtml, that they are worth $218 million, probably a little higer with their success. But I do think they are a strong possibility. Also, no one looks all the way in the third page of a thread. (just me anyways)

Cubs aren't getting Maddux, Boras won't let him go with the sentimental favorite for less money. Come it's Boras, Maddux will go to the highest bidder, even in the AL with the Orioles or the Giants in the NL West. The Cubs aren't offering enough money, let's relax it's Boras $$$$$$

NFL-out of the question, all worth more than $250 million. In fact the Cardinals are worth the least at $505 million. NHL - they are going to be in a lock out next year and he wouldn't buy a hockey team NBA 10 Sac Kings ('98-$156mil) $259 11 Detroit Pistons ('74-$8mil) $258 12 Hou Rockets ('93-$85mil) $255 13 Miami Heat ('95-$68mil) $250 14 Indiana Pacers ('83-$11mil) $246 Those are his NBA options for around the $250 million. Pistons, Kings, Pacers and Rockets are all worth more than that with this year's success. Also, mid-year owner change isn't likely, so probably not the Heat and not in the NBA MLB-We know he is a baseball fan and a Chicago guy with his new building, strating to look like a option. 15 Arizona Diamondbacks $269 16 Philadelphia Phillies $239 17 Detroit Tigers $237 18 Chicago White Sox $233 Arizona and Colangelo won't sell his team. Phillies are winning owners wouldn't sell the team. Detroit, no one wants the Tigers, nothing good about them. Taht leaves the Sox right there. Sounds to good to be true, but anything could happen.

Apparently the White Sox signed Robert Person
maggsmaggs replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Although Jackson is old, he has put better numbers up than Person and I think could be very valuable. By the way, was it confirmed that we signed Jackson. He has had great numbers in his career. -
Here's the link to the entire article about the Sox http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/al...13-albeat_x.htm Here's Person's career stats http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=5538 Not a great pickup if it's true. Although I haven't anything about it till reading it in this article. Career numbers aren't great and he just had elbow surgery, dunno if it's true though. Kenny is hoping lighting strikes twice to get another Loiaza. What's your guy's opinion?

The Expos are cost cutting and for some reason Sporting News said they are trying to get rid of Biddle. Instead of getting Vic Darensbourg, trade a Dave Sanders and a Casey Rogoski or another prospect to get him back. Depending on his Spring Training performance, he could be good starting again or could be valuable as a set-up man or long relief. He could be used in various ways, which is why I like him and he is a cheap money guy and good in the clubhouse. Also, who could forget his little rally caps he makes in the dugout. When he is on, his stuff baffles hitters. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=6552 (very solid with the Sox in 2002)
