Wow, Cubs message boards are now taking shots about his drinking problems... (hey, I know that this place would have been ugly if PK walked, but KW CAME THROUGH!!!)
-
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 11:25 PM) Messageboard fans overrate prospects, radio callers severely underrate them. Kind of weird lol, i never thought of it in that terms, but that is a great analysis

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 11:20 PM) Furcal won't get hurt anyways so I don't think the insurance is going to be necessary later with the insurance I was thinking more of what if he gets another D.U.I. I'm not sure how much the players union would let a player sign a contract with a specific clause, and if he gets another D.U.I. it's going to be jail time
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 11:16 PM) Well that kind of puts the deal in perspective. I like Furcal, I think he's a damn solid player and if he can keep his errors down like he did this year he's a gold glover. 13 mill per year though is nuts. Trib mentioned today that players contracts are still insurable for up to 3 years, so the whole Dodgers contract will likely be insured
-
Some background on this from the L.A. Times writer who is reporting this... Dodgers really wanted Giles, he took about 5 million less to stay with the Padres. They then went crazy after Furcal and offerred him the creative 3 year contract stressing how he can still be a FA in his prime... Saying he was going to go to the Cubs before the Dodgers came in. Cubs offer was backloaded, this year wouldn't have been anywhere near 10 million. The upfront money really sold Furcal, he liked the idea he got more than Tejada per year Said technically Furcal is probably overpaid, but Dodgers plan on using some of their prospects the next few years so they'll save. then he pointed out how Furcal was it as far as an impact FA as this type of player (leadoff, stolen base guy). Mentioned Royce Clayton is still out there (ouch, that hurts)

lol, ok, if you want to hear Cubs fans in pain and then get ripped on, listen to the Score in the 11 o'clock hour. A Cub fan just called and said that some fans are defending it by saying it was too much money and Jason just ripped him up and down saying stuff like "why are you saving the Cubs money?" "The Trib has deep pockets" and even "that is a losing attitude" hahaha, this turned this boring night into some quality moments, I don't mind this snow right now

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 10:56 PM) Could Kenny single handedly push Cubs fans off the ledge if he traded for Pierre next week?? lol, he could, but if the Marlins were asking for the two young pitchers and Cano before Furcal signed with the Dodgers, I couldn't imagine what they're asking for now from teams... If anyone is in Chicago listen to the Score, they're playing all these clips from the Hendry interview yesterday, classic stuff.
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 10:53 PM) They are all getting really fed up with the Orginzation, and the Sox only helped. They have a manager they cant trust, a GM they seem to have no faith in, a team with numerous holes, and there cross town rival just won the series. On top of it, there going to have to pay MORE money to get into "The Shrine" next season..... what did KW want to do this offseason? Resign PK and add more power, preferably from the left... Done and done Hendry mentions Furcal by name, in fact I just heard a clip on the Score where he was saying stuff like "we really hope he comes here, and we've done all we can" and he fails. It is really rare to hear a GM talk as much about a FA as much as Hendry did about Furcal, and he doesn't even sign him.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 10:06 PM) I just saw that tickets are on sale for Coldplay's '06 tour. :headshake I'm not saying I'm awesome because I saw Coldplay back in '00. I'm just saying that it's not even worth the wait, ticket price, bad seats to go see a band in a huge venue. They're playing the Wachovia Center in Philly where the sixers play and Continental Airlines Center in NJ, which offers cheap seats at the wachovia center to see the concert I've heard U2 is great, but other than that I can't imagine going to see a band with an audience over 1k people, and I'd draw the line at 500. The Trocodero in Philly It really depends on the band and how they handle it, I mean there's no doubt that small shows can totally rock, but big arena shows, if done right, can be a great time too.

QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) Hey, those guys are probably on the DVD too...GETTING f***ING ROCKED. Hey, that bullpens handywork is proudly shown when PK hits his slam and Pods jacks his game winner!!

Wow, I don't care how Cubs or their fans spin this one, this was a punch to the gut to that team. Both Hendry and Baker mentioned Furcal by name multiple times this offseason, it seemed like they were penciling him into that lineup. The Marlins or Damon have the Cubs' feet over the fire right now. Was this a lot of money, you bet, but the Cubs need a leadoff hitter and sometimes you have to overpay to get what you need. This should be killing the myth that players want to play for the Cubs and especially Baker, also, I'm done hearing my Cub fan friends talking about all the guys they are going to sign, this is the list I've had to hear of in the last few years; 1. Furcal 2. Tejada 3. Beltran 4. Damon (still a possability) 5. I-Rod 6. Maggs anyone add to that? This is sweet considering PK took a little less to stay with the Sox and Thome waived a strict no-trade clause to come here. I know I may get some crap for this from some people, but I didn't rub the Sox championship in any Cubs fans face, but I will tease my friends about this... Also, I don't want to hear about Hendry anymore, has he made some good moves, sure... but all I see is 1st, to 3rd to 4th...

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 05:25 PM) f***, if Garcia was "tired", I say make him run a few miles before every game. He's been notorious in a Sox uniform for allowing a big first inning. Maybe being a little tired helps him. I think people are forgetting how dominant he looked in Game 4. You remember, that game where the Sox won it all. 0 runs, and I wasn't ever really worried about a run scoring. If that's how he pitches at the end of the season, well, sign him up to pitch as many games as he can in the WBC. I know The Hawk mentioned it a few times during the season, and I tend to agree with him, it seems that FG just does not focus in some games. He tends to get really sloppy with his pitches, pitches behind in counts, etc... in some non "big games" but yeah, i agree, whatever was working in game 4, let's keep that going

QUOTE(agame @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 05:16 PM) I'm just throwing it out there. But, he still performed well in the playoffs despite problems and teams always take risks (as we are taking with Thome). I'm wondering whether the Sox stance is so strong against Boras that Crede won't be signed after this year (I think this is his last contract year), then we might as well get something for him. Is anyone 100% clear on what exactly Crede's back problem is? Is it one that he deals with every day, or one of those that comes and goes, and then it can just completely blow (ie a disk problem). I know Herm Schneider is a real good trainer, so I have faith that he will be able to keep Crede playing... it maybe blind faith, but hey, sometimes that's all we got!
-
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) Joe might struggle to hit 200 if his back is that bad. Look at what a bad back did to David Bell. I hope we get Muller as insurance although I have a hard time believing he'll come here yeah, I get that feeling too... all the reports about this have the Sox trying to convince him, which seems to mean he ain't buyin' now that i posted this he'll probably be signing in the next hour or so!

as a baseball fan the World Classic does intrigue me, but it absolutely spooks me about the pitchers espically, here's a no brainer, the possible White Sox pitchers. If any of our starters pitch in this thing that's going to be a hell of a lot of innings over the last year. this is supposed to start in what, March? So basically FG would have to get crankin' up around late January early February to be in shape for this. Is there any talk of letting the teams put some sort of constraints on pitchers? I know a lot of players are going to want to take part to represent their countries.

This tidbit was in the Tribune article I believe, but the belief that the Dodgers are going so high for him at 13 a year for 3 years is that teams can still insure contracts for up to 3 years and the Dodgers would rather have all that contract insured then offer a similar deal to the Cubs and have 20m uninsured. (i.e. the first 3 years at 10m leaving the last two on the teams books) Now, this is me speculating, this may have something to do with his D.U.I situations, I know two parties can basically agree to anything in a contract as long as it's reasonable, but I wouldn't be suprised if the union basically told Furcal and his agent that they can't put in a clause above and beyond a standard morality clause that would terminate the contract upon another D.U.I. With the standard morality clause there is enough ambugity that the union could drag it through an arbitration or court process. It will be interesting to see what he takes, he would be leaving about 11m on the table by turning down the cubs offer, but he would be a FA sooner and barring any major slippage he would still be an in demand FA at 30 or 31 (depending on how old he is on opening day, i know he's 27 now.) The Dodgers contract IMO is a very good calculated risk because Omar Vizquel got a solid deal last offseason and he will be what, 7-9 years younger than Vizquel was next time he hits FA... But in the Cubs favor an extra guaranteed 11 million dollars is an extra guaranteed 11 million

I posted this in another thread, but from the local reports it seems that the Sox are trying to convince Mueller that he would get 400abs here, they're really pushing hard for him from what it seems. He would be the backup at 1b, 2b and 3b meaning Pablo would likely only backup at SS and Thome would play little to no 1b. If this scenario plays out I would really like the Mueller signing, espically since he would be coming in and knowing his role as super sub, and it's not forced on him in ST

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 01:29 PM) Looks like the Royals, of all teams, are offering Byrd the most money: http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/13316520.htm Heard somewhere, I believe on ESPN Radio today, that Royals are also in the lead for Jaque Jones at 3/15

You can go through name by names of the Sox and Cubs rotation or lineup, but when it comes down to it the Sox won the world series and the Cubs haven't. I know it's dumb and simplistic, but that's where it stops for me. Yeah, on paper I would take A-Ram over Crede, but with Crede's defense and his clutch hitting it becomes a lot harder.
-
QUOTE(timotime @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) if we are picking up mueller as anything but a backup i will be royally pissed. and i would feel pretty edamn slighted if i was joe crede I think if he comes in it will be a backup. What ESPN Radio was saying yesterday was that the Sox were trying to convince Mueller that he would get at least 400abs, he would back up 3b, 2b and I think I heard 1b (I assume that means we'd see very little of Thome at 1b if he signs). So basically if he does sign he would fully understand his role, and I wouldn't mind seeing it, espically with Crede's back.

It's a hard call. I have stepped in on things like that before, but if you do you have to get ready for bad s*** to go down. People who act like that have little regard for anyone, espically a stranger "tryin to tell me how to run my life." I have been swung on before, but like I said, I understand that is a possibility and I'm big enough and have training to protect myself. I've done some real stupid s*** in bars when a big guy was going to beat up a little guy, i just get so angry with bullies, whether it's parents or people just walking around. I know when I worked at a movie theater for 5 years, it was an independent one, so we were allowed to kick people like this out and have the support of our managers and owners. When I haven't stepped in I go home and hug my loved ones and thank God I have supportive friends and family.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 12:06 PM) I have to stop you there. Adam Carolla's new show was terrible. Even the studio audience didn't laugh. Have to respectfully disagree with you there.... They pulled the audience after the first two weeks because it wasn't working. I understand how some people wouldn't like the show, but I think Carolla is one of the funniest people working and I am extremely pissed that WCKG is going to run some guy out of Cleveland named "Rover" instead of picking up Carolla's show when Stern goes to Sirius.
