  1. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) Yep. And Thome will be 38 or 39 when his contract is up. He has a vesting that could kick in to give him a fourth year, which would mean he'd be under contract for his age 39 season. I don't know how much of that year the Sox would have to pay, but it's conceivable they will be on the hook for 8 million year for the next 4 years to Thome. It's not that different from what the Jays are offering Giles (plus Giles hasn't really had injury problems yet, I think). I don't think the Jays offer is that ridiculous. Well, 3 million a year, 12 million over 4 is somewhat significantly different. Also, Giles and Thome's career numbers skew heavy to Thome
  2. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) I agree with you. If Konerko leaves, I would re-sign Frank to a cheap contract. Then I would sign Bill Mueller and re-sign Ross Gload. If Frank gets injured again, Mueller could DH, bat second, and back up Crede. Gload could play some first base and also DH. I would want to see the Sox do more than that. Frank's injury can not be trusted, and I think Gload is a AAAA player.
  3. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 11:33 AM) Will Carroll's sources at BP indicate Paulie is gone. I don't know a ton about him or his sources so take ti with a grain of salt. At this point, I'm willing to say bye to Paulie and use that money mroe wisely. I realize that goes against popular sentiment around here but I think it'd be a good move. I'd bring Frank back at DH and go into the trade market looking for an impact position player. We'd then have the money to extend guys over the next few years Rick Hahn (sp?) had a quote on the Score that said they would take the money and spend it on other players, which might be a no brainer, but it's good to hear. I think the 5 years really kill it for the Sox, I think KW only wants to go 4 for PK
  4. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) I hope they meant offensively, but even so... D Lee is a great glove, and Furcal is very good, but Soriano and Rameriz don't qualify this claim. I think they may mean fantasy wise, which is where all Cubs fans live. This would be the perfect Cubs moves, bring in a bunch of names that will get all the frat houses riled up with excitement, forgetting that they finished 4th in the division last year, and still leave major question marks in their starting rotation.
  5. QUOTE(iWiN4PreP @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 04:49 PM) what idiots. isnt the jays system already screwed with money? and now they do this? what are they doing? I can't remember the exact reason, but I know I heard all of last year that the Blue Jays were going to make a major jump in payroll this offseason, but like I said, for the life of me I can't remember the reason they're able to do it now. They were also the hot team involved with A.J. Burnett at 4/50... I wonder if this changes this or not...
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 09:20 AM) Latest PK rumblings, including KW quotes, from the Trib: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines Note: this was written before Delgado's signing broke. It should be interesting to see what happens with PK now that Delgado was traded. It probably neutralizes on both sides... it takes away a potential suitor for PK, but it also takes away a potential bat from the Sox. The Manny situation should go a long way to determine what happens with PK
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 06:54 PM) Would that actually be scarier than Ramirez and Ortiz back to back? I dunno. On paper, maybe, but after Vlad's performance in the ALCS this year I would go with Manny and Ortiz. I agree with what The Hawk said a few times this year that those two back to back in the late innings are absolutely scary.
  8. Great to see KW isn't resting. I'm looking forward to this offseason, I think there may be some initially unpopular moves, but KW has bought some long term trust from me
  9. Now all the Democrats have to do is figure out a way to spin this so they can blame Bush....
  10. That's how great ESPN 1000 reporting is... Levine was on, said that Phillies may be asking for one of those 2, but the it's highly unlikely the Sox will give either one of those players up. Basically saying they know El Duque can't holdup all year and they want 6 starters again. Then on the next update they don't change their script and basically said Sox and Phillies are talking trade and the names involved are A-Row and Contreras or B-Mac, with no mention that those are unlikely to be the names. FWIW, he also said any deal for Delgado with Marlins would likely have to include B-Mac.
  11. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 01:03 PM) Where's the supposed information detailing Cruise's anger? on the first post there's a link to a CNN video that talks about it
  12. QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 01:14 AM) why is it that scientologists are the only group that can be made fun of nowadays such blatant hypocrasy South Park did a similar episode on Mormons within the last 2 years, which while explaining their beliefs the soundtrack in the background was a singsongy "Dumb, dumb"
  13. QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 08:01 PM) interesting that Thome's career numbers are very, very good at both the Metrodome and Jacobs field. @ Minn- .343/.429/.677 [10.9 AB/HR @ Cle- .306/.440/.629 [11.8 AB/HR @ the Cell- .286/.382/.600 [11.7 ab/hr wow, those are really great. If he's anywhere near healthy and can put up similar numbers in a Sox uniform I would be extremely happy.
  14. After the great job KW and his staff did putting this team together for 2005 I expect to see more stories like this. If KW and crew can do another fine job for 2006 it will only be stronger, and KW's name will start being thrown around for other positions, so does anybody know what his contract status is?
  15. This is an OK move by the Cubs because their bullpen was absolutely horrible last year (I don't care if there's stats that show they weren't that bad, I had the summer off while studying and watched quite a few Cubs games, that bullpen was bad). They needed something to improve it, and Eyre is an OK pitcher. But that shows you the difference between the Sox and Cubs bullpen, Sox wanted to bring him in to be the 2nd left out of the bullpen, while the Cubs are bringing him in to be their number 1 lefty and stabalize it. This is another typical Cubs move... the team needs a drastic improvement in their bullpen, Billy Wagner is a FA, so instead they go after Scott Eyre and act like he's the second coming. This is why Cubs have so many "dissapointing" signings because they get overhyped and are asked to do way too much. IMO Eyre is a solid pitcher, but asked to come in and stabalize a garbage bullpen is way too much to ask, and when he has an average season he'll get ripped. But hey, he can cry himself to sleep on a pile of money.
  16. I think Matsui's new deal with the Yankees showed that the top of the line Japanese players, which IMO only right now includes Ichiro and Matsui, are worth more to the teams financially then numbers will show. Before i get attacked, what I mean by "top of the line" is the players who were phenoms in Japan. I know Iguchi and other players were popular and still are in Japan, Ichiro and Matsui are absolute superstars there, and they bring in a lot of Japanese advertising money.
  17. I don't know who caught South Park this week, but it was a scathing and hysterical send up of Scientology and some of the people who follow it, including Tom Cruise. http://www.cnn.com/video/player/player.htm...uise.affl&wm=10 the link above is a video link to CNN about how Tom Cruise is really mad and might sue over it (I think, my connection has sucked all day so it was choppy for me). You have to go out of your way to see this episode, they give away some of the "secrets" of Scientology that people are only supposed to be let in on after spending thousands and thousands of dollars. The whole time they have the words "This is what Scientologists actually belive" plastered across the screen. The funny part about anyone suing over this episode is that at the end Stan basically dares people to sue them, and then the credits are all names like "John Smith/Jane Smith" They also do a hysterical parody of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" urban drama (Go to Jimmy Kimmel's page on ABC.com and watch his parody called "The Pizza" which is also real funny) IMO South Park is the best show on the air, and they attack everyone, but do it in a rational way, I love it.
  18. From what I heard you can't compar Matsui's contract to market because the Yankees have a lot of money coming into the Yes Network from Japanese sources that Matsui is worth a lot more to them than he would be on a pure open market.
  19. If Thome gets traded it should be interesting to revisit those boards, because no matter where Thome goes I have a feeling it will be for very little current major league talent. The Phils don't have to pay Ryan Howard for awhile, so they can still eat a good portion of that contract and Howard will likely be a bargain.
  20. i don't know why that article mentions the Braves signing Furcal, all the media in this town has basically reported he's signing with the Cubs, he may even pay them to play there
  21. is there any more on this rumor? ESPN 1000 isn't reporting anything about this right now, and they seemed to be the only source reporting this yesterday. I think Hendry has made some solid deals, but I can't say he's a great GM with the simple fact that the last three years he's went from 1st to 3rd to 4th.... that's just horrible. I know he's had some injuries, but that was his fault for counting on Wood, he's failed in getting a solid bullpen.
  22. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 13, 2005 -> 10:21 PM) Is he still wrestling?? Good ol' WCW. I'm 99% sure Saturn isn't wrestling anymore. I think he had the neck fusion surgery that sidelined him then he was severly injured saving some woman from a robbery or the like. He's recovered now, but I don't think he's wrestling anymore. He was never the same after he left Kronus behind in ECW and the Eliminators broke up
  23. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 13, 2005 -> 10:32 PM) So I take it I'm in the minority? i don't think this would be a horrible move. From the way this is worded this wouldn't be the PK replacement if PK ends up leaving. This would be replacing Carl. The thought might be to have a full time DH like Piazza who can't do much more than that, then leave Anderson on the 25 man roster and have him be the super sub for all 3 outfield positions so he gets some regular at bats.
  24. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Nov 13, 2005 -> 05:00 PM) Chicago??? If he's dealing with teams on both coasts, he will probably use Chicago as some sort of home base for like a week, that way he can fly in and out of Chicago to both coasts
  25. John Clayton was just on the ESPN Radio national show and said what a poster said a few posts above, it's far less serious than everyone thought, Benson was seen walking around in the lockerroom without crutches or any assistance.
