  1. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 03:45 PM) Because a pitcher can be average and get 20 wins (see: Andy Pettitte in 2003), or they can be great and get fewer than 15 wins (see: Roger Clemens in 2005). In other words, the win stat for pitchers is far too dependent on factors that the pitcher can't control. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I understand that, but my other question was "Did James really say that?"
  2. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 04:07 PM) I certainly hope a .176 OBP is a fluke. He won't be playing in the majors for long if it isn't. IMO, he'll be pretty good eventually... but that might not be for a couple of years. Borchard was touted as better hitter than BA and, well, he still hasn't panned out. Your question about Caruso is weak and I won't bother answering it. You cherry-pick Caruso as an example of a player that had a promising beginning and then fell apart. Just as many players have done the opposite. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's hilarious that you're complaining about "cherry picking" when you're the one using 34 AB's to judge BA, and then you compare him to Joe Borchard (cherry picker.) You said "by definition" Taveras was a .291 hitter. I bring up Mike Caruso's name and you call me a cherry picker. Shouldn't the "definition" apply to all players? Ah the hell with it. I'll take your own advice and stop reading your annoying posts.
  3. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 03:46 PM) You never explained WHY. (The answer is that there is no logical explaination.) Talk about dodging questions. :rolly I have no idea why a non-power hitter could do so well at a home ballpark that is similar to other ballparks (ie, not like the Twins' turf.) A fluke performance in Houston perhaps? Are you kidding me? The best way to describe BA's 2005 season is "fluke?" :banghead He just got called up to the big leagues for God's sake. I will after you answer my question. Was Mike Caruso a "proven" .300+ hitter after his 1998 season when he hit .306?
  4. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 02:31 PM) Since the win is the ultimate measure of success, <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Whoa, did James actually say that? Then why do SABR-heads discount wins by a pitchers and compare lame stats like BABIP or DiPS?
  5. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 10:12 AM) Tell me exactly how Minute Maid Park is such an asset hitters who have no power to LF? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What don't you get? He ONLY hits at that ballpark. His road numbers are atrocious. I didn't say you did. :rolly Why won't you answer my question then? Was Mike Caruso a "proven" .300+ hitter after 1998 after he batted .306? One year does not make a player, in fact, if a guy only has one good year, he is a fluke, not proven. So "by definition" Esteban Loaiza is a "proven" 21 game winner, Brady Anderson is a "proven" 50 home run hitter, and Willy Taveras is a "proven" .000 hitter. Absolutely stupid. It still better than dodging other people's questions or using tiny sample sizes. Ladies and gentlemen, we now have your new 2006 Anthraxfan.
  6. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 10:37 AM) You're mastery of the English language is very impressive. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> From another thread; QUOTE(quickman @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) And yes you can call me a dinosaur compared to all the teenagers who know everything as they have there parents pay for everything. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 11:44 AM) Couldn't have said it better myself... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You claim you "couldn't have said it better" even though quickman started a sentence with "And," and also used "there" instead of "their." You shouldn't be jumping on anyone else's grammar.
  7. So, how about that Garland trade idea?
  8. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 1, 2006 -> 07:21 PM) Wow, Taveras must be a hell of a hitter at home then. How about this: Taveras plays the home games and Anderson plays the road games. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How many games are theSox playing at Minute Maid Park next year? I just want to clear something up from another thread. I'm not totally against the idea of getting Taveras, but to bash BA based on 34 AB's, call Willy a "proven .291 hitter" when he did it once, and trading Jose Contreras to get him are all f***ing ridiculous ideas.
  9. I'm surprised he didn't mention Freddy's 1 hit loss.
  10. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) He actually hit .306 with 22 steals in 28 attempts. The next season he hit .250 with 12 steals in 26 attempts. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ..and you know what, f*** Mike Caruso's 1998 season where he proved to be a .306 hitter. His OBP was a pathetic .331, but unlike Taveras he had a BB/K of 14/38 instead of 25/103. He also stole bases at a better rate than Taveras too.
  11. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 04:36 PM) As to Taveras' .291 batting average, didn't Mike Caruso hit .300 his rookie year with the White Sox? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've still haven't heard him answer the question. WCSox, Was Mike Caruso a "proven" MLB hitter after batting .301 in 1998?
  12. I find it fitting that we're having this argument with Taveras striking out on 5 pitches with a runner on third when El Duque couldn't find the plate to save his life right now on Comcast.
  13. QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 04:08 PM) He's already been booted out of the rotation in favor of proven talent (Vasquez). Thanks for proving my point! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ...but now we have a question mark in the bullpen! ...and if we trade Contreras he'll move into the rotation making it a question mark in the rotation and a hole in the bullpen! But it's all good as long as we erase that question mark in CF with a "proven" .291 hitter!
  14. QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 03:59 PM) I'm sorry, are the Sox rebuilding and developing young players this year? I must've missed the memo. :rolly <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I suppose Brandon McCarthy should be sent to the curb as well? Why should we let him develop this year either?
  15. QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) LMFAO at the homers who are "overrating" a player who hasn't really played in the majors yet. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Could you please answer one of my questions? (ok, well now two.) Was Mike Caruso "proven talent" after the 1998 season? His BA was .301.
  16. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 03:50 PM) Proven talent? He put up a .291/.325/.341. That isn't a good line at all. And, don't tell me about his .291 BA, because SLG% and OBP correlate much better to scoring runs than BA does. It's such an overrated statistic. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Overrated is not a good word. I think "misleading" is better.
  17. QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 03:46 PM) Wow, another weak counter-argument. You're just full of them today, aren't you? I'm simply saying that a team that's just won a WS and is in position to win another would be better off going with proven talent, rather than a question mark. It may not be wise to give up a starting pitcher for said proven talent, but a less-costly trade for said player is something that the GM should at least consider. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> LMFAO! Taveras is "proven talent?" What does that make the guy we're giving up, first ballot hall of famer? Was Mike Caruso "proven talent" after the 1998 season? You're really overrating Taveras.
  18. QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 03:21 PM) What makes you think that Anderson will be able to hit anywhere near Taveras' .291? At least Taveras has done it before over the course of a full season. Anderson hasn't done anything in the majors For all we know, he could be Joe Borchard, Part II. Anderson's still a giant question mark. Call me crazy, but I'd rather play the guy who's actually done it at the major league level before... especially when I'm making another run at the WS. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ah yes, the ole' "well you answer this before I answer yours." I'd much rather see BA take a hit in average if it meant his OBP for an entire season wasn't a crappy .325. How many of Taveras' "hits" were bunt singles in the infield? Brian is not the same type of hitter as Taveras which is why I expect him to have an OPS at least 100 points great than Taveras next season. Why is hitting .291 such a big deal to you? It's nothing out of this world with the exception that the player's OBP is only .325. Brady Anderson hit 50 homers in a season before. Maybe we should get him on the line to play CF. We "all" don't know that BA could be Borchard part II because he hasn't had a chance to play an entire season like Taveras. Sheesh, give him a chance before you throw him overboard. How confiendt were you in Taveras for 2005 after hitting .000 in 2004?
  19. QUOTE(qwerty @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 03:04 PM) The downside to stealing bases is greater than it is not to. But no one here will ever believe it ( well most). http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2607 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> and all that nonsense written by "Clueless" Joe Sheehan is based on some ridiculous matrix as if the events in a major league game are completely random. According to that horses*** table, the Red Sox should've scored 2.4366 runs in the 6th inning in game 3 of the ALDS. Put the calculator down "Clueless" Joe.
  20. WCsox, who had the better first year; 2004 Taveras or 2005 Anderson? What makes you think that Anderson can't improve on his 2005 season in 2006 to a level like Taveras in 2005? Look at the jump Willy made.
  21. QUOTE(3E8 @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 01:41 PM) Warning, small sample sizes ahead! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Taveras batted .000 in 2004!!!!
  22. Why people keep wasting their time on a site that suggested Mark Buehrle to the Cardinals is something I'll never understand. THAT SITE IS BOGUS!!!!!
  23. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 03:13 PM) Pretty f***ing badass. Motivates me to get back off my ass. I wrote a story all about how trading Garland would get us prospects. I held off over Christmas to put it up and than when I was going to Garland signs an extension so now I got to rework it, lol. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just change "Garland" to "Contreras" and "improving his control" to "not relying on his forkball."
  24. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Dec 26, 2005 -> 10:48 PM) I think you're thinking of Rincon on the Twins. The only place where I see the Sox being worse than they were last year is the bullpen for now. If they can turn Garland into some quality relievers, then they're arguably better everywhere. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Rafael Betancourt got busted last season.
