Buehrle is just not that good.

2006 White Sox Catch-All Thread
whitesoxin' replied to greasywheels121's topic in 2006 Season in Review
QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:36 PM) Have no fear... I just picked him up on one of my fantasy teams. We'll slaughter him now. He was still available, or did you trade for him? If he was still available, then I really hope you are in first place with opponents like that. -
9-3. Damn he's a lucky man to only have 3 losses. Vazquez and Garland are 18-7 and I've been defending them all year.

Have the Innings Caught Up With Buehrle?
whitesoxin' replied to chitownsportsfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 10:43 PM) Can't really speak on what happened to the others since they were a bit before my time. I don't think Mark is any of them. I think Mark is a Glavine like pitcher. You don't think Buehrle will win 300 games, do you? I would love if Buehrle had the same type of career as Glavine, but I don't think he will get as many runs. It seems like even when he's on Mark just pitches to keep us in the game and when you do that you will have a lot of no decisions. -
QUOTE(Purdue129 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) Hummel's chosen Purdue. Nice to see Painter earning his money with the recruiting. Yeah Painter is doing a great job. Hummel told me how much he liked him and we all have known since early May that he was going to Purdue. It was kind of a let down going to a state school like Purdue when he was getting looked at by Duke, U-Conn, UNC, ect. Hopefully the program can get back on track and do well.

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 07:06 PM) derrick rose teams with eric gordon to win peach jam. Hummel and Martin and the SYF Players came in second. BTW, Hummel has a news conference tomorrow afternoon and is expected to decide between IU and Purdue. My "sources" tell me it's probably going to be Purdue with Moore, but before Sampson was ruled inelligible, he came and visited Hummel and Martin at my lunch table.

I'm taking 4 AP tests next year after my senior year. We'll see what happens. I'm not too worried.

Count me in. It just sucks when we hit our slump right when we are playing the 3 other best teams in all of baseball. And I believe it really is just a coincidence.

Stats can indeed be decieving. Look at Iguchi's first two ABs, swinging bunt, somehow stays fair and then he shattered his bat and was 2-2. Pauly didn't even get credited with a base hit when he ripped one into right and Thome got forced out at 2nd. Just saying..

Sunday Yankees vs Whitesox 7/16/06 Gamethread
whitesoxin' replied to southsideirish71's topic in 2006 Season in Review
Freddy Garcia is still the guy I want out there for a big game. Before everyone criticizes me again, keep in mind the Division clinching game, ALDS clinching game, and the World Series clinching game. It's also a day game on the road. I think Freddy will pitch great today as long as he gets out of the first inning. -
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 08:10 PM) I'll admit that Buehrle has very mediocre stuff and, frankly, I don't think he's very bright either. But he's a nice guy, a hell of a teammate, and has been one of the better pitchers in the league over the past five seasons. To say that he's "not that good" just because you don't like him for whatever reason is stupid. I don't like Barry Bonds, but I'll never say that he's "not that good." In this thread Barry Bonds has been compared to Scott Podsednik and Mark Buehrle, yet I'm the stupid one. How do I know what kind of teammate MB is? Do you even know for sure? I don't know how bright Buehrle is, but apparently not very because ever since his start in Seattle basically every team has knocked him around, not necessarily by scoring a bunch of runs everytime, but getting many hits. "Not that good." Maybe I need to clarify for you guys, not THAT good. That is the key word. I was referring to how good he is made out to be by White Sox fans. It wasn't a random statement. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 08:11 PM) No one is jumping all over you. However, I trust you dont watch all 30 teams on a regular basis, correct? So how do you determine your feelings on players outside of the greater Chicago area? BTW, you claim people jump all over you on a regular basis. Is it possible it happens so often because of views might skewed? Are you trying to say my views are skewed? You didn't word it right if that is what you are trying to say. And if that is what you are trying to say I am shocked. Shouldn't a moderator know that everyone has different views and others might not have the same views as you? I believe I am jumped all over because of a moderator who can't forgive and forget. And the answer to your question was already answered in my previous post. I see some players in the media and the same goes for them. They don't have to play for the White Sox for my body to make an opinion on.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 08:07 PM) No one ever said that, there's a lot of factors that are taken into consideration when evaluating players, stats just happen to be one of them. If you just completely swear off all stats, you're doing yourself a great disservice. Even Mr. Intangibles himself Joe Morgan checks out a players stats every once in awhile. I don't disregard stats. I look at them, but just the basic stats. Baseball isn't my life and I'm not going to study all the different stats to determine who is good and who isn't. That's the reason why I suck at fantasy baseball, I pick the players that I like, not the ones who have the best stats. Joe Morgan better check out stats because it is his job as an announcer.
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 08:05 PM) Who said that? I guess the better question what do YOU base your opinions on? Instincts and whatever the hell else is inside me that bases my opinions on things. You guys on here are ridiculus for jumping all over me ONCE AGAIN just because of my opinion on a starter with 4.43 ERA who is our "ace".

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 07:53 PM) :P Ahaha, I love how ignorant some people can be. It makes me all fuzzy inside, knowing some people are just that stupid. Ok? Was that necessary? Arguing with people on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even if you win, you're still retarded in the end. Oh and thanks for all the warm greetings on my birthday fellas. This is perplexing. All of you on here base your opinion on players solely on their statistics and nothing else?
-
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 07:38 PM) Buehrle may be not be in the highest pitching tier (Santana, Pedro, Clemens, etc.), but he's sitting right at the top of the next tier. Who cares what the stats say? Personal prejudice is what really matters! In picking the players that I like, yes personal prejudice is what matters. I don't like Buehrle, I love the White Sox. I like Vazquez. Is that so wrong? And btw, I think all stats are worthless in baseball. ERA, ERA+, RBI, ect. It was beat like a dead horse last year, but wins is the only thing that matters. Baseball is a game where the slightest change in the path of a ball, the speed of the ball, the hand eye cordination of the batter, and so on can change everything.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 07:32 PM) Mark Buehrle has a career 128 ERA+, Roy Halladay 127. Their career numbers are incredibly similar and I doubt you'll be calling Roy Hallday overrated. I could make a long winded post full of numbers and s*** comparing him to other accomplished pitchers of the past decade but I'm thinking that might just be a waste of time. ERA+.... Anyways, I'm not trying to fight with anyone, you can all love Buehrle as much as you want, but I've never really liked him and never will. That's just my opinion so leave me alone and don't throw a bunch of worthless stats in my face. By the way, Vazquez has 4 fewer losses this year than Buehrle
-
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 07:23 PM) So, he's just been lucky for the past five years? Since he's not throwing a Mulder-esque 80 mph fastball, we can most likely rule out an arm injury. And that's good news. He's never been that great IMO. Obviously he is not going to pitch this awful all year, but I would be suprised if his ERA dipped below 4 the rest of the season. IMO Buehrle is very over rated by White Sox fans.
-
Maybe because he has been pitching out of his mind for his entire career and he is in no way shape or form an ace.
-
Since this is apparently still up for discussion, will instigating become a punishable offense?
-
This needs to be closed. :headshake

"Mark Prior has the best mechanics in baseball. He will never get injured."

One National League team will become very desperate at the trading deadline and overpay for Garcia/Vazquez. Why shouldn't they? Any team in contention has a chance at the pennant, and one of our starters would increase their chances. Now it's just waiting and seeing what we can get in return.
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:46 AM) Well then he's going to go into the playoffs with a battered Pedro Martinez, an old Tom Glavine, and barely anyone else behind him. It's not like the Mets are in a position of power here. The White Sox are. You saw what the Reds did yesterday to acquire needs, the Mets and Omar Minaya certainly will do the same. I'm agreeing with redandwhite I really like your thinking and hope KW pushes this idea right until the deadline and forces the deal out of Minaya. It's a long shot, but if I was KW, the only way the deal gets done is if Milledge.
-
If we trade Vazquez I am going to be royally pissed off. Javy is going to be great for us. I would hate to see Freddy go as well, because up until this year he was the one guy I wanted out on the mound in a big game, but it appears as if he isn't that guy anymore. I sure hope he is though. I don't really see a point in this trade. I like the team we've got right now. Cotts/Thornton/Jenks is all that will matter in the playoffs.

Garcia/Vazquez for Tom Gordon being discussed
whitesoxin' replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Please tell me Garcia/Vazquez are worth more than this.
