QUOTE(Cali @ Oct 23, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) This is what the sky looks like from my office in Burbank: The skies are even worse today. It is so hard to breath and I'm inside an office.

  3. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 25, 2007 -> 07:03 AM) Do you think he'll be a CF because they are badly lacking in CF prospects in the system, or are you thinking/hearing he's not that good at 2B? From what I heard (which was very little), they like his athleticism and his bat. I know they had him in CF a fair amount this year but I didn't get much of a read on how it turned out. The batting surge in the 2nd half is a good sign though. I think it is definitely one part due to the Sox lack of legitimate CF prospects. However, I also think that in general CF is a more premium position so they feel his athletism is best used at CF. I think his early struggles at the plate were at least in part due to him spending additional time learning the new position. He is supposed to have the tools to be an average to a bit above average defensive CFer. I don't think we are talking about a premium defensive player, but at the same time, if his bat projects the way a lot of people think it will (myself included) we will be talking about a good who has a chance at being an above average cf'er (something that is much more difficult to find than a 2nd baseman). Also, it definitely has little to do with him not being good at 2nd base. I'm not sure if he's great over there but I never have heard much about him being a poor defensive 2nd baseman. If he stuck at 2nd I'd probably compare the guy to Ray Durham. Above average range for a 2nd baseman, but maybe some minor errors that would make him just a solid second baseman (but with a good stick like Ray Ray always had).
  4. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 25, 2007 -> 08:10 AM) What a great hitter he has been. I believe his contract expires after this year and although he's talked about playing a few more years, I wonder if 2008 will be it for him. And I would agree he knows exactly where he stands in relation to those numbers. And just a guess on my part, the .300 career average is extremely important to him. Not a criticism but he has always been in tune with his numbers. I wish Frank would hang them up at the end of the year because it would be great for him to finish up with such amazing statistics. However, Frank has consistently had money problems over the past couple years and I would be stunned if he didn't stick around solely for the paycheck.

  6. Ya, I have a lot of fun going to Haunted Houses. Haven't been to any this year but as a kid it was always awesome. I even ran a couple Charity Haunted Houses when in high school. I'm thinking this year I'm going to go to the Queen Mary's haunted house thing they do in October (should be cool considering the Queen Mary is haunted as is).
  7. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 24, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) I assume there will be a download made available for last nights show? Ya...whenever that slacker Scalise gets off his ass.
  8. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Oct 23, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) Moving a team to Vegas would be a huge mistake. Vegas will never have a MLB team with Selig as a GM. I'm full supportive of that too (cause a MLB team being in Vegas is just a BAD BAD Idea...or any professional sports team).
  9. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 23, 2007 -> 01:28 PM) Shelby finished with a .301/.352/.508 and I'm wondering why I wasn't more aware of this. For a 21 year old in low-A that's pretty good. Unfortunately, it seems his defense has a ways to go. Any idea on what the organization plans for Shelby going forward -- center field, second base? I hope they don't make a rash judgement and stick him in left -- his bat isn't good enough to play there, but if he could get his defense at second or center to be 'passable' or 'mediocre', he'll be an asset in the organization. He, DLS and Carter will certainly be guys to keep an eye on at Winston Salem this season. Shelby will probably be a CFer. On top of that after this season he will probably be one of the 4 best prospects in the system. I currently see him as a B prospect but in a year I think he'll be elevated to a B+/A- prospect (just a great pure hitter, with good athletic abilities).

  11. I think he was down at extended spring and was able to throw a bit but the Sox were being cautious. Last I knew he was expected to be back in the minors next season. I'd imagine if all goes well he will start in A ball and work his way back up to the AA level when he got his groove back. Hopefully he can get better because prior to having surgery that cost him the year he was moving up the on the Sox prospect board.
  12. Yep, it is that time of the week again. It's time for you to turn off your tv, pop open a beer, and tune into the best in late night sports casting on the web. However, if you can't get the best in sports casting on the web...than why not listen to the South Side Report with Mario/Jason & a special guest Tony. This week's show will be one of the first with minimal White Sox discussion. Why you ask? Because we've beaten the White Sox topics dead, so this week we will discuss the Bears/Bulls and Chicago BlackHawks. So we hope you tune in tonight. And as always if you have any topics or questions you want answered, post them here or share them with us live in the chat. In addition, if you want to call in we may be accepting calls as early as tonight's show. To call us you'll have to set up a free skype.com account and just let us know your interested in calling in and we will set some time aside for your's and anyone else's call. http://ustream.tv/channel/the-southside-report

In fact our headquarters just closed...of course I'm working about 20 minutes from the fires and won't get to go home early.

Ya, I just heard a ton of companies have evacuated in the area. Most are located in the El Toro/Foothill Ranch area (headquarters to companies such as Oakley, Toshiba, etc).
  15. Well there goes my fantasy team. Fantastic.

The firefighters in my area have done a good job. The fire is 30% contained and I no longer saw it in the hills behind my house. It has moved the other direction a bit and it is still big in Irvine. However, San Diego now has been hit with fires and resources are stretched insanely thin with 15 fires blazing in the Southern California region. The one in my area was discovered to be arson. I hope they catch the MFer and he rots in jail. Weather is still nasty and with the resources spread thin (usually Orange County would have sent its forces to LA/San Diego but instead has had to keep them in there own county). The same can be said for LA/San Diego county as they are both handling their own blazes. I don't know if you guys remember 2003, where 10% of San Diego was declared to be burning but on the news one of the chief's said that based on the current weather predictions as well as the forecast (including the thin resources) that this could be worse. So far the most important thing is that very few fatalities so far (i think it is

It sounds a bit better. In the morning they will be able to fly more planes in the area and they are now saying the winds will die down around 6PM tomorrow night. The fire is currently 3800 acres large and so far most of the stuff that has burned down are housing developments that are still under construction (most of the construction was still in the grading phase). Still it is crazy when you look out your window and the whole sky has an orange tint to it as there is a fire within a couple miles. That and your entire house reaks of smoke (even with windows/doors completely shut).

The Winds are supposed to stay until at least Tuesday morning with gusts as high as 80-90 MPH in this area.

QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 21, 2007 -> 09:03 PM) I'm sending this guy for help.. Do you think you may have to evacuate? Hope everything is cool. So far so good here. 2 houses burned down so far (from what I heard on the tv). I'm thinking we will be okay but the winds are horrible and blowing straight for all the homes in our area (at high speeds). Still, it would have to burn through about 1000 homes to get to where we are (maybe even more than that). Apparently the fire is coming down to another set of houses in another area of Irvine (about 5 miles the other direction from me). This is gonna make for an interesting night though and I'm sure I'm gonna feel like crap tomorrow based on how much smoke I ingested on my walk through a fire access road.

OH s***....unless I heard wrong, the fire chief that was just on said they are preparing to protect Newport Beach (unless a new fire started out on the other side of the city) as well and if the fire went that far you'd be talking about the entire city of Irvine being burned to the ground.

Damn it...stupid phone is not letting me email the pictures to my computer. Apparently the firefighters are making there stand at Portola Road (which is literally a mile from my house).

    FireStorm 2007

So I drove about a mile and a half up the road and pulled off onto this access road. Parked the car and went hiking and found the fire. Here's some pics from my camera phone (the fire is only like 3-3.5 miles away and wind speed according to the news is as high as 75MPH). This is without zoom. I was probably about half a mile from the fire, maybe less.

    FireStorm 2007

Power is going on and off, road about 2 miles from me is closed....flames about 5 miles away (just drove to see the flames and you can barely see on the roads) and winds (I have no idea how hard the winds are, but they have to easily be at least 70MPH right now) are blowing the thing closer to all the homes (planes are everywhere in the sky dropping the water as well as the fire retardent stuff they blow). Crazy stuff.
