QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 11:05 AM) its certainly interesting, jas, but i can't imagine if they are truly willing to give up Beckett for Lowell that some team wouldn't take him. Sure he's overpaid, but when you have a chance to get a cornerstone of your franchise for the next ten years, you take on that contract. if some team was willing, they could completely revamp there pitching staff. Imagine if some team was willing to do so and acquired Beckett, Vazquez, and Pavano. That would be interesting. I'd totally pass on Vazquez. I think he's incredibly over-rated. He's had back to back mediocre seasons and is paid as if he were a very good pitcher. However, Pavano and Beckett would be quality pick-ups for any pitching staff. In my mind, this is going to be the most interesting off-season in a long long time. Simply because I think your going to see more trades than every before. Without a strong FA class, its going to force teams to adjust there rosters via the trade market.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 10:58 AM) my freind's take who is interning with the Marlins as we speak and has been for the last year: Thanks for the info. Like I say, the deal would stink from the Marlins perspective. It would be a sheer salary dump (they would get talent) but the key is they get Lowell's contract off the books, but also give up Beckett. They could than swing Blalock for more prospects and cut more payroll. Thats if there is truth to the Fish wanting to cut there payroll in half. If thats the case, I could definately see some "fire" to this deal.

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 10:56 AM) Blalock's work ethic and adjustment ability is very poorly thought of by MLB scouts. I am a Blalock fan, but he has regressed the past couple seasons. Basically starting after his strong 1st half two years ago. He really struggled that 2nd half and was nothing special this past year. The guy has all the tools though and has put up the numbers at the major league level. Good to know about his work ethic though, it explains a lot.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 10:54 AM) you guys are absolutely nuts if you think the Marlins are going to trade Beckett with two more years left of arbitration. I don't buy any of this garbage. The Marlins are looking to cut payroll, but aren't going to dump everyone not named Cabrera or Willis to do so. We aren't speculating. Its the report going around throughout the media. It sounds like its got a lot of backing too and there are some baseball people quoting that its looking like a likely deal. That said, its not a done deal. Even if the Fish deal for Blalock, am I the only one that wouldn't be shocked to see him moved again. Florida isn't going to want him, I assume he's due a pretty big raise/long term deal and if he is already signed to a long term deal I'm guessing they won't want to pay him. If they trade Beckett for a bat they are idiots.

Well 40 minutes to go till the #6 team in the country continues its road to a BCS bowl game. Man I love it, two straight weeks where I get to watch both of my football teams play on TV (ND and Iowa). -

Wilder is a tremendous baseball guy and I'd hate to see the Sox lose him. That said this would be a great opportunity and I wish him the best.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) Face it, Illinois is one of the worse Division 1 football teams this year. -
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 06:18 AM) That to me signals that the Marlins are still trying to move Delgado, especially if this trade goes through. And who knows, maybe Cabrera isnt as good as Blalock at third and ends up going to first. On a side note, is John Danks related to the White Sox draft pick Jordan Danks who went to the University of Texas instead of signing? He is the older brother and a stud pitching prospect. He's a major reason why Danks opted for college. His family is financially secure so he really didn't have to worry as much about the money aspect.

Iowa has made 1 mistake all day and it was a Tate interception that was returned for a TD. 38-7 going into the 2nd half. -
Pavano will be a good pickup for someone. The Yanks will end up dealing him for not too much and will eat a lot of that contract. Actually, if the Sox dealt Rowand to the Yanks they could probably get Pavano and have quite a bit of his contract paid. To go along with this idea, a 3rd team could be in this mix that gives the Sox something they really want. I'd think Pavano would have pretty good value if he was signed to an affordable contract (in fact I'd have no problem keeping him, lol) cause it would open up a few other options. Anyway don't even know why I'm bringing this up, it won't happen.
-
Just because they ask, doesn't mean it will happen. Paulie asked for 5yr 75, he won't get that. 5yr 65 is the most the Sox will give him, imo.

QUOTE(timotime @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 06:32 AM) well, its obvious who's wearing the big daddy pants in this forum. sorry my posts arent good enough for you. jees. If your going to post something, post something with substance, otherwise don't post. Its pretty clear, no need to come in and just make a stupid comment. If you want to comment on a players ineffectiveness or if you disagree with something, please put together an intelligent argument because that adds to the discussion. One liners from a poster that does nothing but one liners do not add to the discussion. Take this as a warning and hopefully you'll improve your posting style or at the very least sit back and read more.

QUOTE(JimH @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 07:06 PM) Good Lord man, put the Giles drum away. You have only mentioned this about 100 times already, he is gonna cost a 3 year deal at probably $25 million minimum. Meaning, not modestly priced. Giles would be a great fit, problem is he's going to play in Los Angeles (Dodgers want him) and to play in the midwest it would take 3/30 minimum.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 04:34 AM) Ozzie knows all about Pierre. If he thinks adding Pierre [at the expense of Rowand probably, who'd have to be dealt to another team to make room] would make the sox a better team, then a few things would be clear: 1] Pierre's offense [ability to get onbase, steal bases, hit near .300] would help the sox score more runs on a consistent basis 2] Pierre's speed in the OF would take away more hits then his arm will give up 3] Pierre and Pods in the same OF wouldn't weaken the sox overall defense I hate giving up Rowand, but I think if the Sox were able to give up Rowand for a Thome like presence (a trade centering around Rowand from the Phils perspective) and than Marte and maybe a prospect for Pierre (and considering Pierre's salary and coming off a down-season I don't know if they'd have to give up much more than Marte). The Sox would revamp there offense with more speed, but they'd also have more power. On top of that, I can't say I've seen Pierre enough in center field, but he does cover pretty good ground and can make some nice plays. I don't know how he compares with Pods at getting jumps (I sure hope he's better) but I wouldnt' worry too much about his arm as long as he is able to get solid reads on the ball and use his speed to get a good jump. I can definately see Pierre making sense on the South Side. Problem is his salary, but that always means he could come here cheap in terms of what the Sox give up. Afterall, this is a guy who steals 50 bases a year and has hit over .300 in 3 of his 5 full major league seasons. The other 2 years he hit .287 and .276. Here is his avg season: .305 AVG, .355 OBP, 22 2B, 9 3B, 47 RBI, 51 SB (18 CS, 73% success rate), 43 BB, 40 K (you got to like the fact he doesn't strike out much).

QUOTE(JoshPR @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 09:02 PM) Assists numbers can be misleading.Of course manny lead the league cause he played the ball well of the Monster. His arm is average at best. Now Ichiro and Vlad's numbers are down cause of no one taking chances. If you wanna talk about cannons. I got 3 in mind. Jesse Barfield, Dwight Evans and Roberto Clemente As far as Vladdy goes, the smart teams run on him. His arm is great, but the odds of him throwing a good throw are slim to none. I definately appreciate all that Vladdy has done for the Angels, but one of the things he's yet to figure out is to hit his cutoff man and keep his throws down. Although on any given play he can make an amazing play with his arm. Manny gets all his assists because the scouting report is to run all day long on him so he gets a lot of opportunities to make throws. He does happen to play the monster really well (when he barehands and fires) which helps.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 04:12 PM) Wow. The four teams left in the "Gaurdians classic" are impressive. Texas - ranked 2nd and 3rd in the polls Kentucky - ranked 8th and 10th in the polls West Virginia - ranked 14th and 15th in the polls Iowa - ranked 20th in both polls All games to be played in Kansas City. I'm assuming ESPN will be televising all of the games? I sure hope so. -

28-0 Iowa, still in the 2nd quarter. Merloni is out and injured and thus far Minnesota has had nothing rush wise. They have been able to muster up some passing yards and get into scoring position twice. They missed one field goal and than had a failed 4th down inside the 20. Iowa is really playing strong this week and the 2nd half of last week. I'm really really getting bummed about there blown games against NU and Michigan. As much as I've slammed them I've finally got to watch a couple straight Iowa games (I love ESPN televising Big 10 games) and they are well balanced offense (Young is the man rushing the ball). As I type this Iowa gets an interception (Chad Greenway) and brings it to the Minnesota 5. -

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 02:56 PM) Did Fresno already get an offer from the Liberty? -- That's a longshot anyway. It would be making the best out of the worst. ISU vs. UCLA would be a winnable game, but I'll belive the Clones in the Holiday bowl when I see it. Oh man, if ISU plays UCLA they are gonna get drubbed. I've been slamming UCLA a lot this year, but I've came away really impressed with there resiliency after that loss to Arizona. Of course with ISU's defense and UCLA's lock of a defense, anything is possible, but its going to be a hell of a feat to shut down the UCLA offense. -
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 10:20 PM) Well from Florida fans, I hear that they will be keeping Cabrera at 3B and moving Blalock to 1B once they move Delgado. Who knows though? That would be foolish. Blalock is a pretty solid 3rd baseman.
-
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 10:19 PM) Delgado available? I think not If they are willing to deal Josh Beckett, who turns 26 next year, and Lowell while his value is at its lowest, for Blalock, who is solid but not spectacular, and a stud pitching prospect, then I think it shows they are clearly building around Cabrera and Delgado. I don't think so and that is clearly a horrible move by the Marlins on a sidenote.
