Winter/Spring 2009-10 TV thread
QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 10:02 AM) She cut off his thumb to get the tracker off. She has become results orientated just like Jack. Remember Jack used a hacksaw in Season 2 to cut off a dudes head. Renee is just bringing back the old school. I love it! That is a bit more acceptable. I thought it was the hole hand.

Official 2009-2010 NCAA Basketball Thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) I think Lickliter stays longer. McDermott has done just a brutal job with pretty good talent this season. Lickliter has some decent young players at Iowa, but you never hear them mentioned with top 50 prospects. The problem with Lick is that he's had tons of players transfer out and they just have nothing. They are such an awful awful team. He's a good coach but I just dont' know if his style of basketball works in a major conference. I still continue to hope and dream that Iowa can hire Steve Lavin. He might not be the greatest coach, but he can recruit, recruit, recruit. But he can only accept an Iowa job cause otherwise I want to hear him broadcasting (cause he's entertaining).

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 10:44 PM) That's what resumes are for. It's more about networking, but I haven't seen a major advantage from it yet. Resumes show your skills, but having someone on the inside show your resume to HR or a manager is a way to ensure you get interviewed. Otherwise you are relying on the stupid search engines that the companies have that go over your resume picking out enough key words to give you a call.

I believe a lot of people use it though to reach out to people they might not have known work at a company they have interest working at. For example, lets say you are looking for a new job and apply and than discover a colleague of yours or someone you know is connected to a guy/gal that works at the company you want to work at. You can reach out and get someone from within the company to vouch for you (and that goes a long way). Basically put, its how you use it. Personally I have an account and don't use it, but if you put into it and utilize it, it can be real beneficial. I essentially do the same thing, but I've always done it with people I'm close too. Luckily I have quite a few solid connections in my field area from being heavily involved in an accounting business organization and than starting and working closely with a lot of colleagues at a big public company.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 09:37 PM) Heads, how much longer can McDermott last in Ames? Staiger left the team today to play overseas. Whose going to last longer...McDermott or Lickliter. Both have been massive busts.

This is pathetic. I'd think this was an onion article.

Official Recruiting Thread II
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 03:40 PM) You really are hanging onto that thread of hope arent you? I think he's all USC or ND at this point. You and I need to forget he even exists. Of course I am. It isn't often that Iowa has a shot at the #1 recruit (by some peoples rankings) in the country. Evidently his dad is very very concerned with what is going on at USC so I don't think he's a lock there. I think ND would be a good fit for him but I still say Iowa can provide him a lot and Ferentz is as good as it gets when it comes to the oline. I also realize it isn't likely, but Ferentz can shine in front of parents and given what Kiffin has pulled I think Kirk could get his parents on board the Iowa experience, the question is whether Seantrel could get on board. I think he'd be dumb to go anywhere but ND/Iowa/OSU. All three schools have coaches that should be there for a while (OSU/Iowa more likely) and are in the midwest (closer to his home so his parents can see him).

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) and once again, why? Hasnt LA demonstrated twice that they dont give a s*** about NFL football? They have a stadium deal ready to rock and roll this time though.

The Bills made a vast mistake on that one. Gailey is a good OC, but he's proven he isn't a good head coach.

Dye talking to Cubs and Padres
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) I like Dye well enough, but I wouldn't be entirely upset if he landed on the north side, just for that reason. Dye is still a very good hitter and would be productive and a bargain. I'd like the Sox to talk about bringing him in as a DH and part time left fielder. You could get him for cheap too.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) Then why does everyone turn it down? ND has had to bring in their 4th or 5th choice both of the last two times the spot opened up. Was that really the case this past year? I don't think so. There is a lot of pressure associated with the job and that some guys just aren't ready. Two times ago Meyer was the main guy and he wasn't ready for ND. Weis was considered a hot commodity and a real good hire at the time they got him. This time around they really didn't miss on any big name guys before ultimately landing Kelly who was the up and coming coach in college football. I don't see how we missed big-time. Sure they through feelers out to a lot of people but I didn't see many guys turning down the job with the exception of real big name guys that are already heavily rooted in there areas (ie, Stoops/Ferentz).

QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) There's too much drama though, for them to be "elite" for coaches. Recent polls when the job was available would not agree with you. I heard Cowherd talking about a coaches poll and it was still regarded by head coaches as the top job in college football.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) Tennessee is a great college football job. Florida Texas USC Ohio St Alabama LSU Oklahoma Tennessee Michigan Florida St Miami Penn State In no direct order, are all prime football jobs. ND needs to be on that list.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 03:01 PM) Derek Dooley. After all the big names thrown out there, I'm disappointed. But whatever, it was a really bad time to be looking for a new coach. At least we know he can recruit (LSU Recruiting Coordinator under Saban) and is from the South. He's been called "Nick Saban Jr." Hopefully that's in regards to the coach, not the personality. Apparently Smith was again not interested.

Tice is a great hire as our oline coach. Real proven track-record in that department and a significant upgrade over Harry.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 10:02 AM) FWIW The Giants D was ranked 13th in the NFL and the Bears D was ranked 17th. Regardless, I'd take the talent on the Giants D over the talent on the Bears D right now (although it is pretty puzzling that they were as bad as they were last year). Look at how the Giants D finished though. Injuries were definitely a factor but Coughlin is on the hot-seat in New York too.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) I think you greatly overvalue the "great wideouts" we have, in fact I'd say we still have one of (if not) the worst WR core in the entire league. I see most candidates viewing position as a dead-end hire because most rational people know that Lovie and his entire staff will likely be fired at the end of the year. You cannot count on a new HC coming in and keeping you, it doesn't seem to happen very often. A good offensive mind will see the 8TD's Cutler threw. Not many OC's can get a job where you have a potential franchise QB to call the shots for. That makes the job enticing, regardless of the HC situation.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 09:24 AM) Do you blame him? I'd take better talent on D and more job security any day if I was an up and coming D-Coordinator. The Giants defense was worse than the Bears though and if push came to shove it certainly sounded like he favored the Bears.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 09:23 AM) Cheap f***ing Bears. Disgrace. I knew when the Giants were involved we wouldn't offer enough money to get him. Do you have a link to this Steve? I'm looking and don't see anything official.
