QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 09:29 AM) If we acquired Furcal, I'm guessing Alexei might move to CF. That would actually be a tremendous idea. Alexei in center would be a nice fit and he has a very strong arm (plus plenty of range). If he'd be open to it I'd be a major fan (especially if Getz can pan out at 2B and eventually you slide Beckham in). You still have Brian Anderson on the bench who could slide in and play CF and if Furcal gets hurt you always can move Ramirez back into SS.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) Because it would cost something like 4 years and $50 million to get Furcal here. Honestly, if you move Javy and Dye (plus already having moved Swisher and having Crede/Uribe/OC's contracts gone) that would be a drop in the bucket (especially when you factor in that the Sox would have gotten cost certainty out of there youngsters in the rotation for at least a few more years).

QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 09:15 AM) Why pay a king's ransom for Roberts if the Sox can just sign Furcal and keep Alexei at 2nd where we know he can play well. Roberts would look nice in a Sox uniform though. If the Sox could get Jackson and a nice pitching prospect (I can't see them getting Jackson and Davis) than the writing is on the wall for Javy. Maybe they can get one above average prospect for Javy and than either go out and get Furcal or use some of the existing system to land Brian Roberts. They'd clearly have quite a bit of resources freed up.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 09:08 AM) Jackson's had MUCH more time to figure things out than Floyd had had at the time. More time in the majors yes, but both were at similar ages when they ultimately made there break-through. Well I don't know if I'd call Jacksons season a break-through season because there are some scary indicators (ie, not as many k's and a very high WHIP). But he's still very young with a plus arm.

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 09:04 AM) A package of Davis and Jackson seems eerily similar to Floyd and Gio... That package is a lot better. Jackson is at the very least a league average starter with above average stuff and Davis is currently a top 25 prospect in all of baseball. If the Sox got that type of haul I'd be left speachless. I'd also tell you that Javy will be packing his bags.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:58 AM) Why has everyone fallen in love with W. Aybar? Didn't we just get Betemit? He's a nice role player to have on a team, but I don't ever envision either Betemit or Aybar getting 300 at-bats with the Sox unless there are major injuries. I pointed that out in another post I made. With Betemit, Aybar makes less sense.
-
QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:51 AM) Edwin and Wade...mark me down. Wade is arguably a top 20 prospect in all of baseball so you aren't going to get Edwin Jackson as well. In fact, It wouldn't shock me at all if you couldn't even get Davis straight up for Dye. I'm still holding out hope for a Davis/Aybar deal, but I guess my question would be whether Aybar even makes any sense with Betemeit in the picture (Aybar > Betemeit though). Another possibility of course is if the Rays are so down on Niemann that the Sox could pick up Davis and Nienneman with the intent of converting Nien to an eventual back of the pen type guy (initially 6th to 7th inning, but hopefully he develops into an 8th/9th inning guy).

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:37 AM) If JD bring us some flexibility to go and sign someone on the FA market, thats even better. Kenny usually isn't super active in the FA market but I do think it would free up some cash to potentially acquire a player via trade who has a contract.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:33 AM) I'd be shocked if the Rays would entertain that notion with Dye being the main piece coming from our end... If you added Jenks to the equation you could have the potential for a pretty big blockbuster type deal. I'm guessing Wade Davis and Aybar or a prospect.
-
QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:29 AM) If we don't get Wade Davis, I'll be very disappointed. Davis is a very intriguing name. He's pretty much done what he can in the minors, is young, and projects pretty nicely with a fastball that can hit the mid 90's and an improving curve. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:25 AM) I could see Aybar and an arm. I think KW likes Jackson a lot. I don't see the need and you clearly aren't even getting a potential starter if you deal Dye for Aybar and an arm (depending on who the arm is). If you trade Dye I'd like to think you'd either get one young player who you grade out at turning into a borderline all star or get a few more raw guys that have high potential.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:25 AM) Edwin Jackson, anyone? For whatever reason, I would be surprised if he were not part of the deal... Who else might we be interested in? Any ideas? When is Edwin Jackson due to become a free agent. I know he's played in parts of 6 major league seasons. I'd be all about a deal that involved Jackson and another player of good value. In general I think the Rays/Sox match up very well. All that said, Jackson hasn't exactly dominated in the majors and has given up more hits than walks and has a questionable WHIP. I love the stuff but continue to wonder if he'll flip the switch and take things to the next level. But you got to love the arm.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 06:34 AM) Getting the two or three best players from AA would mean we would be getting two or three of the best prospects in baseball, who are also already advanced to nearly MLB ready players. I'd be giddy if we got those guys too. What he said!!!!

QUOTE (Cubano @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 05:58 PM) What is the name of that Korean pitcher? Po-Yu-Lin I believe.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 04:12 PM) Well, from that perspective, we can say signing MacDougal and giving Contreras a contract through 2009 cost us even more, another draft. Heck, didn't we spend half a million on that Korean pitcher who's done pretty much zero? I think it's a great sign to send to the fanbase. Agreed, which is why I think its great when the Sox make small moves even late in the season when they are out of contention (ie when they moved Tadahito and Mack) as that small funds can go out to help you sign a few more guys into your farm system as international free agents (or give a 7th rounder a bit more money than you typically would).

QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 03:31 PM) Low-risk, high-reward. Awesome. It's not necessarily low-risk. If you think about it an 11M contract would be similar to that of an 11M signing bonus (a little different, but similar). However, given the scheme of things you could have him pan out tremendously. Fantastic move but if he didn't pan out, you'd be talking about more money than the Sox spent on the entire 2008 draft.

QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 12:08 PM) Whisler had 27 starts at Charlotte. 12-10, 3.81 ERA 156 innings 45 BB 71 K He'll get picked. I'm surprised he wasn't protected. Sounds like the Sox have some plans with those last three spots on the 40-man. Maybe Viciedo gets a spot. Any day now... All you have to do is watch him pitch and you'll quickly realize his numbers were a complete fluke.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 08:51 PM) It was Jeff Bajenaru (sp?) right? Really great guy, big sabermetrics guy too, never really caught on as a reliever in the big leagues though. Jim Bullard had posted here as well. -
He'd be a nice bench option and could be a nice platoon partner for Fields. Plus he could fill in at the corner outfield spots in a bind as well as 1B. But he probably would want more money than it would be worth.

I was at the game and I was in awe at how good Rose is. He doesn't necessarily have great handles at all times but he is so quick and his ability to just stop and pop with full body control is ridiculous.

Jack in the Box Taco's are amazing.

Sox could still target DeJesus. I don't think the Royals will move him but there is obviously a good rappore as the Sox and Royals have made numerous deal in recent years.
