  1. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) Even when he was capable of playing the field he was still no damn good at it. Even if he is physically capable of playing the position he'll be an incredible liability out there. Unfortunately, the sox probably don't particularly care about how "good" he could be as long as he is serviceable out there. They seem to want a rotating type DH who can play the field and give more versatility for Ozzie.
  2. QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 03:15 PM) Get it done KW. He would be a very good hitter at the cell and add a lot to our lineup. Though he will be 36, he still has power and can add that OBP that we surely need that's for sure. The sox HAVE to be confident that he can still play the field as even though logically it makes the most sense to put this man in your DH spot, Matsui himself, and the sox org. want to have him play some LF for versatility as well.
  3. QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) Leaving Frank's skin color out of the equation, could he have played in the dead ball era that Walsh played in? As a one -dimensional player like Frank was, I doubt it. To flip thimngs ... I believe Walsh could have played in this era. There is an art to keeping hitters from hitting a round ball, with a round bat, squarely. Walsh was, apparently, a master at his craft. See thats where I disagree. Sure Frank won't have nearly as many home runs considering the feet from those days were probably 720 feet or something like that, but you bet your ass his average, doubles, possibly triples (earlier in his career) etc.. not to mention his walks (one of the best eyes at the plate in the game) and probably RBIs will have certainly gone up. As Mike pointed out, there was no (or many pitchers were not throwing many) curveballs, sliders, forkballs, etc. during those times. I believe Walsh would have been a good pitcher even in this time, but certainly not a ridiculously low ERA pitcher here whereas if you put Frank in that time, not counting skin color, he's probably still the best, just without the many home runs. There was no symmetrics/FLD also during those days. Hell for all we know, Honus Wagner could have been a true butcher out there. In the records books and such though... WCSox and others do have a point of Ed Walsh regardless and honestly you can't really argue it. I would say Frank is one of, if not the best white sox hitter of all time.
  4. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 02:18 PM) Why do you think he's good for 20 home runs and 80 RBIs? What has he done to inspire such optimism? He's had three straight seasons of 500+ at-bats, and the most he's been able to muster is 15 home runs and 60 RBIs. He hasn't even driven in 70 runs in a season yet. Maybe playing in the Cell will help improve his numbers a little bit, but that's certainly not a lock. No, I was not happy when we got this guy in the first place, and I'm even less happy now that he's apparently going to be sticking around for the next three years. There is no part of his game that I would classify as "good". He doesn't hit for power. He doesn't have any speed. He doesn't get on base at a particularly good percentage of the time. He's apparently not so slick with the glove, and he strikes out a lot. What is there to like about him? It would be one thing if he were just a kid, only a year or two into his career, in which case you could expect him to steadily improve, but he's not. He's been around for a full five years now. I am not confident that he's all of a sudden going to bring his game up a level or two. Of course I hope I'm wrong, but like I said, I'm not confident about this guy at all. Not one iota. I agree with the lack of confidence in him, but you got to trust sox scouts/management who have a knack of finding these under the radar type players and them blossoming here. The man is finally gonna play one position for the first time since 2006 (which was his best year though only about 420 PA) and will help any hitter to settle in knowing they only have to worry about playing one position. He is a gap to gap hitter, something the sox (we were last in the league in extra base hits) surely need (which he, Beckham and hopefully Rios will probably be our only charge of that) and you have to think those gap hits will turn into home runs at the cell which is good for his projection not to mention moving from a pitcher's park to a hitter's park. He was also playing for the Royals. Not many players will net 80-100+ RBIs with last place teams. I do want his walk rate to go up. For a moneyball player, that is the one concern I have with him as he was brought up by discipline but you can tell we are actually going for that this offseason. (the rumors about Matsui/Adrian, etc..) He will also give you an average as some fans are average freaks, and the most important thing.. if you look at most of his highlights, you'll notice he always gets his hits from the left side of the field (think spray hitter; by the gaps), which will help eliminate the ol' Greg Walker lift and pull effect.
  5. I hope Ian Kennedy finds it again.. for the D-Backs sake. If he does... the deals looks waaaaaaay better for the D-Backs. I would say the Yankees did very well. I LOVE it for the Tigers as far as young spects/players, but I'm willing to bet money that Scherzer (who has been questioned for years with his delivery) and his arm will not hold up for long. Terrific stuff he's got though.
  6. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) I don't think people really know who Carl Crawford is, they think they know but he's not nearly as terrific a player as the media portrays him. He's also going to be an insanely expensive baseball player and one who comes with a significant amount of baggage. I've been saying for years that he was overrated. But I also said yesterday that given people's proposals (I mean Juan Pierre?! C'mon) and Ozzie's forever fascination with the leadoff hitter, that it makes Crawford that much more sense by the day. I wouldn't mind getting him of course (I'd bank he'll be very, very good in his contract year) but not for a younger Quentin, even if he is made of glass. Jenks + whatever spects... I'm sure KW will certainly listen.
  7. Everybody likes upping their post count it seems..
  8. Article will be up tomorrow from Mark Gonzo on both Halliday and Matsui...
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 12:05 PM) Its funny how having one of the all-time greats on your team can make a coach look great, right Phil Jackson? A Michael Jordan or a Peyton Manning can definitely do that to people. Hell Peyton right now is 12-0 with a new head coach. He is just an amazing, HOF quarterback.
  10. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 11:42 PM) Yea, it has to be a mind game, as the price is just far too large for 1 season of Halladay. And we'd also have to win every game 1-0 since getting any offense would be out of the question. Well with Doc and his endurance... he's a guy who can go 9 innings with ease.
  11. Second pic I can see it.. slightly better Keith.. slightly.
  12. Judging by this thread, and with Ozzie's forever fascination with the leadoff hitter, Carl Crawford (and his amazing D in LF) is looking ideal more and more by the day.
  13. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) Read somewhere that players sent their way would have to include Danks, Hudson, and two other top prospects in the organization. Danks2, and Flowers If the sox are giving away anybody in the current rotation (which will probably eliminate KW's possible dream of a Halladay-Peavy-Buehrle-Floyd-Danks ungodly rotation) then it probably won't work, especially for a guy who is probably a one year rental and will seek big money after this season.
  14. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) I see two midgets back there, you said ass. Ya, epic fail bro. I was expecting at least Serena Williams booty territory. It could be how her dress looks though, but I'm only seeing thickness... in the wrong spots.
  15. Kenny being Kenny. But no doubt he's looked into it. That's his job.
  16. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 10:03 PM) I drink at halftime during Bulls games too. I can't say I blame Artest. Especially during THOSE Bulls years?!?! I'm shocked not all the Bulls players (that we know of) weren't drunk/high playing.
  17. I hope Niemi keeps progressing. This is really perfect for the Hawks franchise and only makes the decision easier to move Huet in the offseason to resign the Hjalmarssons (Scotty Bowman did say that he'd bet his reputation that he becomes a top 4 defenseman in the league), Ladds (possibly unless Beach, etc.. are higher on the Hawks radar) and even the Niemis of the world. For now though.. we just enjoy the ride hopefully all the way to Lord Stanley.
  18. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) Well, I could see how someone who is mixed with any combination of races could be racist against a completely different people-group or may have some amount of self-hatred/racism. It's not impossible. It would have to be really, really something wrong in that persons past. Hell I'm mixed with the world and I make fun of every race as a joke, and my friends make fun of me (and my mixtures) sometimes as a joke, but nothing of hatred and I know some pretty racist bastards who are more or less just people I "know" not befriending. You are right though, it isn't impossible at all, but it's very rare, and really, really weird. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) Ace, Havent you seen the David Chappelle documentary about the black blind KKK member? Yes I have actaully. Good call.
  19. How can a mixed man be racist anyway? That is just silly.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) From moron's twitter: Ugh I am actually shocked that Ozzie said Quentin for RF. If he''s anything like he was in Zona a couple years back and in the minors/college, our OF will be greatly improved defensively with Rios in CF and Q in RF.
  21. Its a pretty safe bet that Bob Howry will never wear a sox uni again, although if I remember correctly, it was Eyre who had more problems with the org though. I could be mixing those two up since it's 4:30ish am here.
  22. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 6, 2009 -> 03:41 PM) He sure didn't sound very surprised nor very excited. I'm pretty sure he either doesn't know how to ride it, or can't really ride it until he is retired (could be a clause in his contract since that is pretty dangerous, I.E. Rowand) So right now.. that's mostly all for show. But he was feelin the bike though. He LOVED the scoreboard reference and the baseballs on the wheels it seemed.
  23. What a way to show Chris Bosh that we completely suck. Geez if they are gonna show this type of crap to these coveted FA, other than the whole large market, big city ordeal (though the friggin Knicks can say the same crap with that horrid team) than we would be in terrible shape. BTW.. Noah can taken over as the team leader in every way.
  24. It's official with Figgins so update when you can.
