2010-11 Offseason
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 12:44 AM) That is the thing that kills me and it seems it happens alot when regular posters try to "evaluate" prospects. A prospect has one bad year after mashing every level he was at, only to have his swing changed in the off-season and his mind mentally f***ed because of mechanics and now he's horrid? Tyler Flowers put up a .220/.334/.434/.768 line in his worst year in the minors at AAA (which was his first full year after putting up .286/.364/.438/.803 in 105 ABs last year). Now I'm not saying he'll pan out (since that does happen as well.. prospects are hit or miss) but a guy who will be making the minimum next season and will probably put up a better OBP than A.J. without even trying (and has more offensive "potential", though I hate that word) I would like to at least see what he can do next season, and hope Greg Walker doesn't try to continue to fix what ain't broke. (or.. maybe wasn't broke prior) A.J. is hitting .268/.300/.383/.682, 82 OPS+ this year. Flowers will never match A.J. in average, but I'm sure he can put up a .300 OBP (and a higher OPS) at the major league level making peanuts, especially if the sox can address the other areas that are much more important (a hitting DH/RF/1B [whatever happens to Konerko and/or Quentin, 3B if they don't like what they see in Morel, bullpen, LF [ya thats just me talking since I do not like Pierre] etc..) Now if the sox have something else planned in the off-season (FA signing/trade lined up for a solid catcher) fine, but I'm one of the few that prefers we go in a different direction as far as the catchers position (unless we might have another DH-like situation, then you bring A.J. back or if we've upgraded at DH/possibly 1B if PK is gone, 3B, possibly LF/RF substantially, than sure, A.J. wouldn't kill you) You don't consider the fact that KW was willing to deal Tyler for two months of Adam Dunn alarming?

Cell Phone question
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 05:47 AM) What problems have you been having with T-Mo? I have been with them for years without any real complaints other than my Dash sucks as a phone. I am thisclose to picking up the Samsung Vibrant today and going a couple more years with them. Nothing huge. I've been with them since 2006 and I feel the service has declined a little. I've been having some problems with my phone that have nothing to do with me for the last two years. And I just want to change anyway. Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I'll be going with the Incredible.

And Jeff Passan has been in the f***ing zone this year. His latest article perfectly illustrates why Felix Hernandez should win the CY despite the paltry win total. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Ao5N...endegrees091210

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 11:09 PM) The only reason it's "misleading" is because of how limited it is. There is nothing you can really learn about a hitter from average other than that he either gets a lot of base hits or he doesn't. That's very important information to know, but there's no real depth to it. Then why is average considered one of the five primary "tools"?

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 11:18 PM) And on the contrary, the 2006 team was easily the most talented White Sox team I've ever seen and, even with the pitching staff falling apart from Buehrle's blow up against the Cubs and onward, they still won 90 games. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened with that team had they not traded for Vazquez, even as much as I liked him, because the depth Vizcaino and El Duque would have given the Sox pitching staff would have been very nice in the second half of that year. Minor League playoffs: should you care?
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 11:51 PM) Why stop caring after caring all year long? I spend $1,000 on season tickets every year, I want the Barons to win and go to the playoffs. Those teams have fans, it's easy to say that when you don't live in a minor league town. Those players care and they are part of the organization you are a fan of. Why wouldn't you want them to succeed? Just because the minors are for development, doesn't mean that winning a league title is irrelevant. That's work that the players have put in all year. I understand if you don't care about them winning or losing, but you're basically saying that the minor league teams don't matter and equating them to a glorified practice squad. They wouldn't play competitive games at all or keep records if the teams and leagues weren't legitimate. You're insulting the fans in those cities by saying winning or losing a league title doesn't matter. We don't all live in Chicago. Like I said, to each their own. I've never in my baseball fan life given two s***s about whether one of our minor league affiliates actually won or lost a game. All I care about when it comes to the minor leagues are LEGITIMATE prospects, not nice guys (Jeff Bajenaru comes to mind) that have no chance in hell of making it to The Show. I look at this Dash team, and I don't see one guy with a snowball's chance in hell of sniffing Chicago before, I don't know, 2013? If then? And another thing that makes minor league titles worthless is that the elite talent is obviously going to make it to the big leagues at some point during any given year. The elite talent that's leftover usually jumps at least one level during any particular year. So by playoff time you don't even have anything close to the team you started with most of the time. Just a bunch of roster filler and AAAA guys on their last harrahs before it's time to go out and get a real job. I will say you have a point for those that don't live in Chicago. But you have to see where I'm coming from as well.

And that's a White Sox Winner.
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 01:48 AM) You don't think 8-10 is eons better than a horrific 5-13??? 8-10 is bad, but not abysmal. The Twins have a chance to go 13-5 vs. the Sox. What does any of that have to do with next year?

Quentin
QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 12:35 AM) Pence would be dreamy if he got on base more. Even at his current state, I would definitely make that deal. His defense in RF alone would be worth it. He's got a Markakis/Bruce like arm.
-
Quentin
Vance Law just went Kalapse on Ace. How about CQ for Hunter Pence straight up? Pence is one of the most underrated players in baseball. I love him. And I know the Astros would forfeit their franchise before making such a deal.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 12:12 AM) There's no excuse for our pitchers to let Jimmy beat us ... again. Don't we know how to get the big lug out?? He made enough outs in Chicago (to go with so many big hits) but he did make a lot of outs! Cmon Sox 8-10 vs. Minnie would make a statement heading into next season. 5-13 against them will be AWFUL!!! What planet are you from?

Cell Phone question
T-mobile sucks and I'm switching to Verizon. I'm trying to decide between these two. Anybody that's been with or currently with Verizon and has had one of or even both of these phones? Which is better? I hear they both have to be charged constantly. But that's no big deal to me. Any input would be appreciated.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 09:11 PM) Beating up on division opponents, winning one run games and avoiding crippling injuries are things good, successful teams tend to do. Those are not indicators of a fluke. On the other hand, the superb year we got out of the pitching staff -- specifically the bullpen arms was pretty much out of nowhere. And, of course, that was one of the primary factors that allowed us to win it all. Some refuse to recognize that it is damn near impossible to maintain the 2005 team's level of performance year in and year out. That team is arguably one of the best (in all facets of the game) to win a championship in the last 25 years. The White Sox probably won't ever have another crazy year like that -- even in future championship years, but that doesn't qualify it as a fluke. Masterful seasons are, by nature, hard to replicate. The tendency of some ST posters to s*** on 2005 because they see it as the reason for the inflated egos of our GM and Manager is stupid. Enjoy 2005 for what it was and save the hate for Ozzie and Kenny instead. They both had massive egos before and after the Series win. If '05 wasn't a fluke then what is? I'm sure if the Cubs had a season like that we'd all be saying it was a fluke. What about teams like the Angels and Cardinals (I won't use the Yankees as an example, as they play by different rules)? They're in it every year. The Twins? Enough said. 05' is really the only trump card Ozzie and KW have to play. And it was a pretty good card. But that was 5 years ago. Getting old.

And The Giants have caught the Padres. And more terrifying for the Padres, Lincecum looks like he's reverting back to his '08/'09 self. And how about those f***ing Rockies. The anti-Sox when it comes to second-half performance. That's 10 wins in a row for them and they're now only 1 1/2 games out of first.

2010 AL Central Catch-All
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 07:51 PM) 2005 can be considered a fluke in baseball because everything went right for the Sox in that run, we had so many breaks in the playoffs and really we avoided any crippling injuries during the season and won a vast amount of our 1 run games. That team was not supposed to win on paper, so it can appear to be a fluke. Yet, baseball is a game of flukes. Not to mention career years by literally the entire pitching staff and our record against division opponents, which was a total anomaly.

Part Time Thome Kills Sox Again
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 03:40 AM) I still think there was no urgency to make a deal cause Paulie, Oz, KW all wanted to stay pat. They were wrong. Oh my goodness. I like you overall greg. But if I were a cop I'd taze the s*** outta you like they did to those dudes from the Hangover and lock your ass up on some bogus charge.

Part Time Thome Kills Sox Again
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 03:18 AM) Of course it will be a black mark, cause we failed and didn't win division w/out Thome. But I'm saying we had options to COMPETE and win it w/out Thome, not sit back and misidentify the fact we needed a bat at the break or TWO BATS. Sox not only blew it in preseason but blew it at midseason. We were FINE w/out Thome. We could have stuck it to them and competed with them all the way even though they had Jim Thome. Sox were right there at the break and you guys IMO are acting like wimps saying, 'Oh we couldn't win without Thome.' Big bad Oz and Kenny. I'm saying we had it. We add somebody besides Thome at the break and we're fine. Last I checked, it took two to make a trade. The Sox tried to get Dunn. They failed. They probably tried to get a couple other guys that we didn't hear much about and failed. That's what happens when your farm system is barren. Look at the Phillies. In the last year they've acquired two aces and an all-star caliber #3 starter (possibly a #2). Why? Because they have pieces teams want. They didn't neglect their farm for most of the last decade and are just now realizing that it's a tad bit important if you're not the Yankees. Point is you go into the season with the best possible team you can field. Not wait until August and try to fix something that could've been fixed before the season.

Part Time Thome Kills Sox Again
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 03:12 AM) Why not respond to my point! We were in it without Thome. Sox decided to not tamper with chemistry and add a player or two except a pitcher when we had a good one already in Huddy. We have. You don't listen. If we have Thome GOING INTO THE SEASON we have a little more margin for error. Does it guarantee anything? Nope. But it can't be ignored. It's been over and done with. But that will forever be a black mark on Ozzie's and KW's resume. You'll get no argument from me about the Jackson trade. I've been made my feeling known on that and will not recant.

Part Time Thome Kills Sox Again
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 03:04 AM) LOL On and on about Thome. Thome didn't cost us the division. We could have picked up a similar DH. KW listened to Oz. It's both their faults. It's second guessing about Thome. This board had so much Thome hate his final year here. I hope Thome leads them to the WS title. Once and for all, Minnie, go for it. And the Ozzie haters may get their wish of his firing. Surely Thome will bury us in that 3 game series some more and Oz just might freak out where he throws something or injures a writer and finally gets fired for good. He's sensitive about the Thome thing. You guys on this Thome kick fail to accept one fact. We were in the race w/out Thome. We did not add to the team at the AS Break. We stood pat and paid for it. We could have responded like competitors and added a bat. We were right there with Minnie. Sox thought they could stand pat. Halfway through the season we were right there WOUT THOME. Sox could have but didn't add the bat to continue competing with Minnie. But keep dreaming about Jimmy Thome who so many wanted out of town and were so happy he went to the Dodgers. Face it, greg, if Thome had been part of the '05 team you'd be agreeing with every single one of us. You wanted Crede here when it was clear he was done. You were one of the guys killing the front office for not being Pods back (even though we got his black clone in Pierre). You refused to acknowledge that Jermaine Dye was the worst defensive RF in baseball for about three years. You'll cut your arm off before you say a single negative thing about Bobby Jenks. And word is you wear Timo Perez boxer shorts.

Minor League playoffs: should you care?
QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 12, 2010 -> 02:56 AM) How is it different than a regular season game? It's still evaluation time for White Sox prospects. For the organization, yeah. I'm talking about you guys. It seems some of you really care if Great Falls or Winston-Salem wins their league title. Like will you order a 2010 Winston-Salem High A championship shirt? Oh my god. I busted out laughing typing that. To each their own. The minor leagues to me are nothing more then for player development.

Worried about the Bears poor preseason? Worry no longer! http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=7060 So there it is! Since the 1985, I repeat, 19f***ing85, Bears had a poor preseason and won the SB, there's ultimate hope! Worst article ever. God I wish people would let go of '85. I've got a feeling it's going to be the same with the '05 Sox. In 2025 they'll be 23748468423 greg clones still bringing up that year whenever they want to feel better about the team's ineptitude.

Chicago White Sox. Kansas City Royals. 6:05 PM CST
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 11, 2010 -> 11:56 PM) How do you know he'd have done this with the Sox? WIth Thome you think we win this division? I don't. We actually were in pretty good shape but the Sox refused to make a move and again it was the wrong decision. We were doing just fine w/out Thome. Sox had a chance to improve and passed on it. The Sox were supposed to dominate on the mound. I wouldn't call what our starters have done as domination. Was Thome Dan Pasqua when he was a Sox or something? Are you that shocked by the season he's having? I'll admit an OPS over .1000 is a little surprising. But the guy could obviously still mash. And if Ozzie didn't want to make him the full-time DH, fine. There would have been a good 400 PAs available for Thome, even with this stupid rotating DH debacle. But Ozzie clearly said there would be no at bats for Thome here. He was obsessed with having all his DHs capable of playing the field. You know, like how Terry Francona and Ron Washington obsess over David Ortiz and Vlad Guerrero being able to play the field.

Chicago White Sox. Kansas City Royals. 6:05 PM CST
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 11, 2010 -> 11:32 PM) I agree Oz should not be the GM. He should manage the talent. That didn't happen with this decision. Shame on Kenny for letting Oz make the call. But you must admit our team is perplexing. We go 25-5 and look iike we'll never lose. All the players and KW think we can stay pat and Oz. And we make no move, and guess what, WE NEEDED HELP. The 25-5 and 38-13 was great but we needed more. That Thome thing did not cost us the season. Right now WE CANT BEAT TEAMS IN THE CENTRAL and that isn't cause of our DH situation. The one move we made was stupid. Jackson for Hudson. Manny arrived too late. And off steroids, he looks like a husky singles hitter to me. Big deal. So having a DH with a .900+ OPS wouldn't put us in a better position to beat teams from the Central? Holy s***. His OPS is actually 1.048. Yeah, he wouldn't have made a difference at all.
