There are a ton of free agent outfielders available, and some of these guys are going to end up signing for a number we think the Sox should have spent. I have no idea what they want to spend for a right fielder, but I'm sure it's not much. Gallo Pederson Pham Profar Rosario Duvall Pillar Calhoun If the Sox have truly given up on Colas, and they have no intention of signing someone at least semi-serious, we're going to see a 162-game parade of Sheets, Phillips, and various other scrubs.

2023-24 NFL Season Thread
hogan873 replied to CentralChamps21's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
It will be very interesting to see what they do at QB. There hasn't been any convincing news or rumors whether they're sticking with Fields or going after Williams. That could also depend on if they bring in a new head coach, Harbaugh or not. -

If the Bears do pursue Harbaugh, and depending on what you read they will pursue him, they would shitcan the entire staff before the ink dries on Harbaugh's contract. I can't imagine Harbaugh wanting to come to the NFL and not have full control of all decisions. Would the Bears allow that? This Bears team is not too far away from contending. Bringing in Harbaugh and a staff of his choice along with the great draft positioning they have could make them a threat in the NFC North instantly. -
You know it's a crappy off season when the signing of Brett Phillips garners a four page thread.

Same number of losses, but less ugly!

The Sox won't score a lot of runs, but they won't give up a bunch of unearned runs.

At least he's a fun guy. And he can pitch when the Sox are down by a dozen.

We don't know that. I would hazard to bet that the Sox could end up with at least one player that has a very good career. Most likely for a few years with the Sox before they are traded because they're going to be expensive.

What's frustrating is most teams are non-factors for the top free agents every year. I don't know if a salary floor and cap fixes that, but this s%*# just gets old year after year.

This is ridiculous. The deferred money in Ohtani's contract makes perfect sense now. Of course we knew the Dodgers were going to be a big player for Yamamoto, but this just rubs me the wrong way. Well, this is much less a problem for the Sox than it is for teams like the Giants and Padres. I see the Giants making the next big move. Snell? As an aside, Cubs fans are probably quite disappointed. The team went out a pulled the ultimate coup, stealing Counsell from the Brewers then promised to be very much in on Ohtani and Yamamoto. Their off season has been about as exciting as ours so far.

When I first read the rule, I thought it was referring to pitchers warming up in the bullpen, which would be crazy. This makes more sense, but a rule to address something that only happened a few times (compared to the number of games played) seems strange.

White Sox sign Chuckie Robinson to minor league contract

Yeah, he doesn't care if the team competes, but he cares about placating TLR and saving money and hiring unqualified people pissing off the fans. -
White Sox sign Chuckie Robinson to minor league contract

JR knows the Sox aren't going to contend. He says they will but knows they won't. And he doesn't care. -
I don't put much stock in the Pirates rumor. Being from there originally, I follow the Pittsburgh sports teams. An insider hinted at a big move coming, and someone asked in the comments if it was Cease. The insider just said he'd be thrilled if it was. A big move for the Pirates most likely isn't going to be something like Cease; it'll more like a "meh" deal for most teams. I haven't really looked at Pittsburgh's prospects, so I don't even know who the Sox might target. Skenes is obviously off limits, and he's really the only guy I know anything about.

You'd think, and there are still enough teams looking for quality arms.

Ohtani Watch: Dodgers sign - 700M over 10yrs
hogan873 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This is aggravating, more because it's not against the rules. The Dodgers found a way to sign a guy for a record contract and then pay him a tiny fraction of that contract for 10 years, which allows them to go out and sign more top talent. Ohtani doesn't care because he's making $50 million a year off the field, and he knows he is set for life with $68 million a year for 10 years, starting when he's 39 years old. There's already enough disparity between teams like the Dodgers and Yankees and teams like the Pirates and A's. Deals like this are going to cause more tanking and less spending by more teams. This is not good for a sport that is already losing a fan base. -
Lux, Pages/Stone, and Sweeney? I get the feeling LA will want deal Lux, and if I remember correctly, he was rumored to be part of a potential package at the deadline.

Certainly a lot of bitching about acquiring a good defensive catcher for a PTBNL, with a good chunk of the salary to be paid by Atlanta. Do we remember who the Sox rolled out there the past few years?

Ohtani Watch: Dodgers sign - 700M over 10yrs
hogan873 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ohtani to the Blue Jays is the best scenario, provided he doesn't do the craziest thing ever and sign with the White Sox on a 10 year $100M deal with a plethora boosters and elevators making the deal worth as much as $101M. Puts pressure on Baltimore to make a deal for Cease. Possibly makes the Dodgers desperate to get Cease. Keeps the Dodgers from getting every damn thing they want. And it's just different...not the same handful of teams making big deals. -

Morosi is reporting that Ohtani's decision is imminent and possibly today. There's been a lot of smoke around Toronto recently, but I still think the Dodgers have the upper hand. If, however, he does sign with Toronto, that's going to put a lot of pressure on Baltimore to get better. Could push up the return on a potential Cease trade. -
I think most of the folks on here saying they don't care if the Sox move aren't secret Cubs fans. We're all sick and tired of this team, more specifically the owner, jerking us around year in and year out. Most of the vitriol is just venting. There are very few of us who would be okay with the Sox moving. We're going to be miserable without a team to cheer for. We'd rather be miserable with a team to piss us off.

A lot can happen in 6 years, when the GRF lease expires. Obviously if the Sox plan on moving to another site within Chicago or to another city, a decision would be made sooner. JR is 87, so who knows if he'd be around or in decent health in six years. He could very well sell his stake in the team over the next few years, and it would be up to new owners to make a decision. I think the most likely scenario is JR is making a point to visit the Nashville mayor, making a scene while pretending he's being secretive, in order to build leverage for a new stadium in Chicago. There are so many things that would have to happen and be approved in order to move the Sox to a new city. But, who knows, the A's are on the move to Vegas. Tin foil hat theory: JR is going to sell the Sox and will start a new ownership group for an expansion team in Nashville.
