QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 8, 2006 -> 06:25 PM) Ok, I just can't resist...why? Are we going for moral victories here? Or, maybe where wins and losses don't count like little league? The only two options were redding and haeger... given the choice, who would you rather watch pitch? Who has more potential? Haeger is the most major league ready out of anyone in the system and is leading the international league in era. I am pretty excited for his start(s) too. He at least has potential to have an impact his first time seeing the league... over redding who is just disgusting to watch. The way i see it... if redding pitches we are losing. If haeger pitches we will likely lose but we have the chance to watch a home grown knuckle ball pitcher who is better than redding's piece of s*** self.

QUOTE(WCSox @ May 5, 2006 -> 06:16 PM) Which is why he plays RF. But he can still get the ball back into the infield quickly and reads fly balls better than most RFs. If range were the only factor used to evaluate his defensive skills, he'd be playing 1B. Uh, not really. He's a good offensive player who tends to make a lot of clutch hits. A-Rod and Tejada are in the "elite" class, but I don't think that Jeter is. What I've seen him do suggests otherwise. Range isn't everything. What I see a player do during a game (and especially a playoff game) carries much more weight than stats on range or fielding percentage. Popular opinion influences everybody to a certain extent. I was actually beginning to believe that Ozzie's "Sunday Lineups" were killing the Sox last week. If you want to bring offense into the argument, sure. But if you're only talking about defense, I see very little difference in range or arm strength. But after the plays that A-Rod botched at 3B in the playoffs last year, I'll give Jeter the slight defensive edge. I do not have a problem with dye in the right... even though his best defensive days are behind him. His arm last year was a severe problem though... Who has been a better lead-off/two hole hitter since he broke into the league? He is elite at what he does. Jeter> a-rod in the field? You do realize the only reason jeter is starting at short over a-rod is because a-rod basically gave it to him... because it is ''his'' team. A-rod is clearly a step ahead of jeter defensively... but you rather go off of what you see during some playoff games. Statistics and watching the two play short tells me who is superior pretty easily. -
Cintron makes that play i bet.

Robinson should have a error for that ball he butchered... ahh good ol' mlb.

QUOTE(WCSox @ May 5, 2006 -> 05:04 PM) One needs to consider more than range when evaluating a player. Dye has limited range, but still makes plays in RF becuase he gets great reads on balls and has a relatively strong arm. Pods has enough range to be an elite CF, but he lacks the ability to make good reads and has a below-average arm. The knock on Jeter's range seems to stem from blatant Yankees-bashing. People hate the Yankees and hate the over-exposure on SportsCenter, so Jeter becomes an "overrated player" in the eyes of non-Yankess fans. :rolly I'll admit that his range was mediocre at best in his prime, but the bottom line is that he makes difficult plays (yes, even ones that would cause Uribe to break a sweat), makes the routine plays with few errors, and has an accuarte and relatively strong arm. And his "Baseball IQ" is about as high as it gets. Regarding defense only, I'd take Jeter in his prime over Valentin or Royce "The Choice" in their primes any day. Back in his prime (late '90s), I don't know of many SS I'd rather have, except of course for Vizquel and possibly Renteria. Dye's arm strength doesn't mean s***... he has vlad like accuracy. When it comes to jeter... he is an elite offensive player... and a mediocore fielder. No one really has an arguement for him to be much better than mediocore in the field. Btw, there is no bias from me when it comes to sports, i may be the most unbiased person you will ever talk to. Doesn't matter if jeter is on the yankees, royals, cubs, brewers... i evaluate a player for what they are able to do on the field... not what jersey they wear. Also, i might have taken that a-rod guy over jeter... -

QUOTE(WCSox @ May 5, 2006 -> 03:24 PM) Jeter's range was better back in the '90s than it is now. Granted, he wasn't THE most mobile SS back then either, but he made (and still makes) tough plays, as well as routine ones, with minimal errors. That's what really counts. Of course, Jeter also broke into the league when Vizquel was still a bad-ass and winning GGs year after year after year, so it's no wonder that he didn't win one back then. But I think that he was certainly deserving of serious consideration. Jeter's lack of range makes easy plays look harder than they are in reality... same goes for alot of players. He has never had a season that was gold glove caliber and never will... doesn't matter to win the award though as we all know. -

QUOTE(WCSox @ May 5, 2006 -> 03:14 PM) I'm not so sure about last year, but Jeter should've won at least one back in the late '90s. Jeter has consistently been in the bottom third range wise in the majors. I would personally have a guy who makes some more errors but gets to many more balls that should not go through for a hit. If there was an option between jose valentin or royce clayton i would take valentin every single time ( jeter is much like clayton fielding wise). -
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ May 2, 2006 -> 10:07 PM) Ugh, I don't think Jake would be very good. I think he would have be decent if the series started off with him. The best way for them to go is someone that is lesser known... stay away from any of the top stars. Would be an awkward transition if gyllenhal took over after the third one ( doubt anyone does it other than maguire).

Chandler is just brutal to watch. Really use to/still do like the guy... but damn is he borderline retarded or what?

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 2, 2006 -> 09:54 PM) I read that Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco have signed for 3 movies and thats all they are committed for. the hot rumor is that Jake Gyllenhal is the next spiderman. I didnt say that the series is over, just a new cast That is true about the three movie deal. Maguire has also said that three spiderman's is enough for him and he will persue other things... until they offer him 25 million to come back. Gyllenhal is only rumored because he was up for it originally... and again after maguire was not sure he would be back for a second and third due to back issues.

Signing carlos lee or any player like him ($$$) is the exact opposite of the indians plan. The indians would invest 20%-25% of their payroll on a left fielder that they have zero need for? The indians bring ^ either snyder or gutierrez and end up paying them next to nothing to produce.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 1, 2006 -> 02:15 AM) Freddy and Jon's era's are going to go down more then Mark's and JC's are going to go up. Thornton can actually throw strikes now and I don't know how you can say he looks worse with his numbers backing that up but whatever. Agreed on the offense though, we're hitting about as well as we can hit as a team. One or two good/bad starts... and everyone is back pretty much equal. This time of season can still be very helpful... and hurtful to an era in just one or two starts. Not worth looking much into a mid five era at this point in the season. Thornton? Thornton currently has pitched 5.2 innings this season and has given up seven hits and walked five. Sure in his last three outings, which was a total of 1.2 innings pitched... he looked alright. Fact of the matter is what he has done with the sox through his brief time in spring training up until this point is no different than what he did with the mariners and the minors. He will pound the strike zone one outing (threw 19 out of 22 pitches for strikes one outing for the sox) and he is also capable of not even throwing 40% of his pitches in the strike zone. I said it the second we got him... he is capable of stringing together multiple good outings that he looks focused and in command...then again he is extremely capable or giving up big innings and losing everything he just had going for him.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 1, 2006 -> 01:09 AM) Hmm....the bullpen hasn't been all that great, as good as a few hitters have been, a few others have been subpar, and I disagree about the starters, who can overall (here's looking at you Judy and Freddy) pitch better IMO. Unless of course, this was simply a bait post..... The sox currently stand at 4.3 bullpen era. Last year the team bullpen era was 3.23 which was second best in the american league (to the indians) and third in all of baseball (cardinals) Realistically, i see the sox in the 3.7-4.0 range this year.... holds will also be down from the 78 last year (only 8 this month) The white sox best hitters on the team are currently smoking the ball. The white sox worst hitters on the team podsednik... anderson... uribe (ops wise anyway) are currently hitting the worst. So what happens when dye, konerko, and thome all drop their current ops's down 0.200 points at the very least and the other three raise theirs only .100-.150. The teams best three hitters combined for over an ops of .1000? Chances that happens again is unlikely. Once buehrle and contreras's era start going up and garland's and garcia's start coming back to earth (still of course not a big fan of either) there will only be a small difference in era. I have much more faith in politte putting up a solid era/whip for us than i do of thornton or logan ever doing anything succesful for this team. Thorton? Looks exactly the same as when he was with the mariners. I take that back... he actually looks worse... and his numbers back up that claim. Logan? As most everyone knows he does not deserve a spot on this roster. I do not want to hear... well we are just hiding him and trying to get him in the game at the right time. The right time is always when up or down by seven runs he does not belong on the roster. There is someone... some where that can throw the innings he recieves in a more needy spot. If boone logan was right handed he would be working at some local store @ his hometown instead of on a major league roster where he clearly has no place on. Even when we get soxtalks approval of when the team is playing their best baseball... guess what? There will still be a couple hitters that cannot do s***... a bullpen arm or two that is struggling... and probally a starter thrown in that is getting bailed out by the offense.
-
The hitting so far is as good as it will ever be. The pitching outside of four games has been extremely f***ing good... to a point that i highly doubt they will be able to pitch better. I find it unlikely that the sox have a better month this season.
