QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 12:07 PM) That's one of the biggest changes Corey has made, he's not so focused on HRs anymore, he actually realizes how valuable his speed and contact hitting are now so he's more looking to get the ball on the ground than he is lift it in the air. From what I've seen from him in Baltimore he's a new man, he's completely revamped his style of play and would fit in perfectly at the bottom of the Sox' order. I haven't seen him in Baltimore at all, I'm just going by his Cubs run. So, if that is true, then get him...he still worries me though.

Thanks for getting Al-Zarqawi...*looks at watch*...almost 5 years later. I'm really sick of the Dem-Rep fight. On this board and in the media. They are all smarmy. They all are lining their pockets. They are all just trying to get re-elected. If you want to portray yourself as a Democrat or a Republican with your belief systems, that's great, do it, but leave the government out. Forget about the Senators and Congresspeople. Forget about the President. All politicians have lost their way (just look at the "amendment" that's supported by the GOP banning gay marriage. Great, you are against it, but if I remember my US History correctly, I believe the GOP was based on letting the states have greater power in deciding such things.). I don't even know what Democrat and Republican truly mean anymore...they are just labels. And they are worthless. Sorry for the rant, but it's just not even worth arguing with people anymore because the arguments have no substance behind them. Quote this, insult that, blame, flip-flop, filibuster...ENOUGH!!! Instead of power, how about doing your jobs and trying to come up with a GOOD PLAN? To do what? To do ANYTHING! /end rant.

I feel horrible for that child. Yes, she'll have money. Yes, she'll know all the "stars." But, I've got even money that at some point, she will be in rehab and will be in therapy for her whole life. Thanks...but no thanks. Angelina and Brad became stars, Shiloh was BORN a star. Just a little to live up to. I hope she is healthy and all, but i also hope she's grounded.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 11:44 AM) What's so bad about 96 strikeouts (what he's currently on pace for)? He's only walked 11 times compared to his 32 Ks but the guy is still finding ways to get on base, I have no problem with a player striking out around 100 times if he's going to be getting on base anyway and when he is on base taking 2 extra bases with his sick speed. Hell Jermaine Dye is currently on pace for 105 strikeouts, Podsednik 99, Konerko 120 and Iguchi an unsettling 150. Would you turn down Iguchi because he's struck out 18 more times this year than Patterson and has only walked 5 more times? I'm just going by the times I saw him with the Cubs, but it isn't the amount, it's the timing. What worries me is if the Sox are down by a run and have a man on second and no outs, that Corey is going to be swinging for the Dan Ryan instead of popping one over the 2B head. Or bunting to move the guy over. If he is willing to do that...climb aboard Corey. But if he's trying to hit a kid on the Fundamentals deck...stay in Balto.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 11:01 AM) I think that Corey Patterson confuses people more than pretty much any other player in the majors. If we're talking defense, he's excellent, he's above average, he's merely average, he's below average, he's atrocious, etc. The stuff that I've been reading is just amazing. All I know is that he is 26 out of 27 in SB opportunities, he leads the league in bunt-hits, and he is approaching a .300 batting average. Has he sucked for 5 years? Sure. How old is he now? Only 26. Am I gonna go on record and say that we should look elsewhere? Hell no. Some of them numbers are pretty f***ing telling. You don't disregard a guy who is murder on the basepaths & has the potential to finish with a .340 OBP, .280 AVG, and 100+ runs while leading the league in steals and bunt-hits. We should look elsewhere for what, exactly? The bunt-hits alone should be a red flag that this guy is finally starting to get it. USE YOUR MOTHERf***ING SPEED, COREY. Hit the ball on the ground every single time unless the situation calls for a fly ball (sac fly) or whatever. I'm not in favor of trading for him, just because of his strikeout numbers, but don't forget he will get to play the Cubs 6 times a year and 81 of his games will be in Chicago, soooo, he would have a lot to prove, or at least rub it into the Cubs faces if he does well. It may not be a bad move, but I don't think Balto would trade him now.

We must all watch Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band this week. RIP Billy...

Congratulations to you and your family! Gianna Grace Chaos. Has a nice ring to it.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jun 8, 2006 -> 08:45 AM) If we could steal Clark and maybe Matt Wise away from the Brew Crew, this team could have a few less holes... Dammit Tony! I was just about to suggest Matt Wise! We aren't going to get Turnbow and Kolb walks too many hitters, even though is ERA is excellent. Two birds with one stone and I still think you get both with a top and a middle ranked prospect.
-
So, who do we trade for? I haven't even thought about who, yet, but it seems obvious this is going to be a trade possibility.

After this series, Detroit doesn't scare me as much. I still think they are going to come back down to earth (actually, it's already started) and Cleveland, unless they make a big pre-trading deadline pitching move, can't rely on Paul Byrd as the replacement for Millwood. In the future, Detroit has the pitching, they just need consistent offense from players without an injury history. Cleveland has the position players, they just need to fix the pitching. Minnesota, with the construction of the new ballpark will get a quick infusion of cash, so watch out for them after that's built. KC will be .500 by the year 2156.

QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 11:14 PM) City of God, it got a lot of great critic ratings, but I haven't met one person besides my friends that have seen it. One of my all time favs. Definitley underappreciated and recommended to anyone who likes movies. I'd have to say: Hard Eight Bottle Rocket Spice World Dark City Mallrats OK...not Spice World.

QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 11:31 PM) Ever hear a certain song and get instantly transported back in time. (Sounds like a line written for Barry Williams to hawk a best of the '70's compilation disc). When I hear "Heaven" by Bryan Adams, it's 1985 all over again. Every time I hear it (which isn't often) I think of the song that was playing while I danced with my grade school crush. I was in love with her for 6 years, and then finally asked her out in 8th grade. Lasted about 3 weeks. Best three weeks of my life. I would have married that girl. share This happens on a daily basis with the "Flashback Lunch" on the local "alternative" radio station. In fact, they are playing Levolor by Veruca Salt which brings me back to my first apartment out of college. Anything from the 80's brings me back to CO Daniel's at the U of I, cuz, well, i was at the first Time Warp Tuesday. Me and about 6 other people. That just makes me sad. That's the great thing about music, though, it can play in any number of situations and plunk you right back into that space when you hear it again.

QUOTE(UC76 @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 09:52 PM) I think it's too early to say the Sox have become fat and lazy, but I am worried. Last year they played like they had something to prove, like they were underdogs who knew they had to do evey little thing just right to win. So most every little thing did go right. I'd love to see that edge back. I miss it. Being in second place behind the Tigers might just give them that edge this week. At least, I'm hoping so.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 07:08 AM) If the forecast holds, I may not go at all. It's supposed to be 100+ every day starting this Thursday. I knew this summer was going to suck when it was 100+ in April, and May we had NO rain, which is supposed to be our "rainiest month"... Texas is so screwed this year with the drought situation. Anyway... we'll see how things go, but I don't feel like sitting there for a game when it's that hot. Why don't you send the Rangers and Sox down for a night game at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock? For cryin' out loud, guys, why can't you schedule a Rangers-Sox series for a DAMN WEEKEND?!?! I'm too old to do the one day turnaround to Dallas and back. Grrrrr... Cheer for the Austin White Sox contingent if you go! Perhaps a sign?

I can't remember where, I think it might have been Buster Olney's blog a couple of days ago, but it said that Tejada's range is as weak as it has ever been. Tejada would be a great pickup if we didn't have Thome and insert him as the DH, but I would rather have Uribe's defense over a year and deal with the streakiness. I would definitely listen to offers, but it would have to greatly favor the Sox. PS. I love it, the Sox have enough depth on the team and the organization to actually deal from a position of power.
-
Wasn't there a stretch last year where the Sox played kinda like this? Hmmm...let me think...oh yeah, when the lead when from 15 games to a game-and-a-half...and what happened after that? Just about every team goes through something like this every year (except the Royals, this IS their year). They are in a collective team funk. It may have a little something to do with the World Series, but even if they would've lost last year, the team would still be going through something like this at some point. They'll get back on track, and don't forget, they are still playing .600 baseball and are ONLY 2 1/2 games behind. It's not like this team is the Pirates.
-
Well, of course it's possible. Just about anything's possible. I mean, he could pitch for another 15 years...I'm guessing he hits about 150 and then he ends up in a bullpen somewhere...
-
I didn't read the whole thread, but the Tigers aren't a second half team. I believe Maroth and Bonderman both broke down in the second half the last couple of years. That being said, they aren't going to go away, but let's see how they play the Beasts of the East and their west coast swings before we relegate the Sox to the WC. Plus, the Sox are still hanging-over from last year, I believe. When they get Uribe, Garland and Politte straightened out, then we can talk about a real race.

QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ May 2, 2006 -> 09:05 AM) For the record, I'm worried. I'm not worried that he'll go 8-16 with a 6.50 ERA I'm worried that the Sox paid $27 million over three years for a guy who is going to go: 12-12 4.56 ERA 13-12 4.48 ERA 14-11 4.12 ERA in 2006, 2007 and 2008. I understand what you are saying, but what always gets lost in that discussion is the innings he eats. He's like Buehrle in that way. Yes, it is a lot of money for a .500 pitcher with a 4-5 ERA. But, I think they would keep him over Freddy. Ozzie understands it's a business first and will deal with it when it happens.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 1, 2006 -> 04:41 PM) He is a serious contender for the gold glove this year. Especially if he keeps hitting. He is going to cost alot more than 5 million a year IMO. I know what you mean, but that statement is a sad state of affairs. That's why they have the Silver Slugger award, for people like Manny...Gold Glove should be for fielding only. But, like I said, I know what you mean, and you're right.

I mean, c'mon...what do you expect from a team whose name is the equivalent of naming your son Thomas Thomas? And now, introducing your 2006 "The Angels Angels!!!" Pssshhh.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Apr 28, 2006 -> 01:15 PM) I have no further information to add regarding their alleged fued, but I've noticed DJ's broadcasting skills when disconnected from Hawk as well. Two years ago was perhaps the moment I realized how much Hawk restricts DJ. I believe it was a FOX afternoon game against the Indians. I was surprised how well he did. It made me appreciate the patience it takes to work alongside Hawk. Even with their troubles, I enjoy their interaction. Everytime someone complains about either it only heightens my appreciation for them. I don't tune into baseball games in hopes of gaining insightful commentary. I tune in for entertainment. This essentially is baseball, right? Hawk/DJ provide a comfortable atmosphere for me. Yes, the homerism can be unbearable on occasions, but Hawk's enthusiasm for the ballclub is what makes him unique. Half the damn broadcasters in baseball all sound alike, act like anyway. It's good to have an original voice. I agree wholeheartedly. After hearing Josh Lewin doing Rangers broadcasts the snoozers over at the Astros, I long for the days of Hawk giving people nicknames and his little colloquilisms (sp?). Luckily, we have Milo Hamilton (yes, I know, formerly of the Cubs, but also of the Bulls) doing radio play-by-play of the Astros with Alan Ashby. that's a pretty good team. If I want to learn about baseball, I'll try to find Steve Stone. If I want fun, I'll listen to Hawk and DJ or Rick Sutcliffe.
